Danny Welbecks move to Arsenal will help England, says Wayne Rooney Posted: 06 Sep 2014 03:22 PM PDT Danny Welbeck will improve with regular starts as striker Arsenals new signing likely to play against Switzerland Wayne Rooney has backed his former Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck to benefit both club and country after his £16m transfer deadline day move to Arsenal. Rooney, who scored his 41st goal for England from the penalty spot but otherwise laboured during Wednesdays 1-0 friendly victory over Norway, said he hoped Welbecks move to the Emirates would ignite his international career. Danny is a lively player; an impact player, the England and United captain said. He is quick, he can score goals and I am sure with him getting the move to Arsenal now, hopefully he can play up front for Arsenal. That will really help him with England. Continue reading...![]() |

League leaders Peterborough United turn on the style against Port Vale Posted: 06 Sep 2014 12:01 PM PDT Entertaining with stylish football is sometimes more important than winning, according to the Peterborough chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, but at London Road the former is delivering the latter. Its Posh We Are proclaimed several of the banners draped across the new stand approaching completion behind one of the goals, and there was indeed a certain strut about a performance that kept United at the top of League One. While it pleased the crowd, however, the crowd cannot have pleased the club, in terms of its size at least. Just over 6,000 to watch a team topping the division, on a day without competition from the Premier League or Championship, can only be disappointing, and should be a cause for reflection. A father bringing his son to the game was taken aback to find two seats in the stand cost £39; reducing the cost might, in the circumstances, have filled the ground for once. Powerful Radamel Falcao El Tigre is ready to roar for Manchester United Posted: 06 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT Goal-hungry ever since he was a child, Radamel Falcao has extraordinary talent but must stay fit to make his mark at United United sign Falcao for £16m from Monaco Strikers goal obsession will spur Manchester United United deal secured after Real Madrid baulked at price When Radamel Falcao was a child, he would watch his father toiling for a series of sides of ever-decreasing quality and it upset him. I watched my dad play in defence and it disappointed me, he said. I wanted him to go up and score a goal. Radamel García once scored a famous goal against Millonarios in Bogotá, but he was more generally known for two things: his aggression and his religious devotion. For every foul, another prayer, as the joke had it at the time. But his son didnt share the joke. His son wondered why anybody would ever settle for playing at the back. His father, perhaps, shared a sense that football held something more than clattering opposing strikers, and hoped his son would achieve it. Although he called his son Radamel, he also gave him the middle name Falcao after the great Brazil, Internacional and Roma midfielder. Quickly, though, it became apparent that Radamel Falcao García Zárate was not much like either of the players he was named after: he was a centre-forward and a very good one. Returning Neymar settles bitter friendly against World Cup foes Colombia Posted: 05 Sep 2014 09:40 PM PDT A brilliant late free-kick from the returning Neymar gave Brazil a 1-0 victory over Colombia in a bad-tempered World Cup rematch in Miami. Making his first start since suffering a fractured vertebra during the teams last encounter, which Brazil also won, Neymar curled a fine 25-yard effort into the top corner on 83 minutes. The strike gave new coach Dunga a deserved win to begin the rehabilitation process, following the nations World Cup heartache. For the Colombians, who had Juan Cuadrado sent off for a second yellow card in one of the least friendly friendlies youre likely to see, new Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao made a late cameo appearance and had a late header deflected over the bar. However, the winning goal was a just reward for the new Brazil skipper Neymar, who once again endured plenty of torrid tackling from the Colombians. The man who ended his World Cup dream, Camilo Zuniga, showed little remorse for that high knee with a couple of scything early challenges in a fiery opening. Continue reading...![]() |
