England goalkeeper relaxed despite increased competition
City renewed contracts of several key players in summer

Manchester City are keeping Joe Hart waiting regarding a new contract despite the champions recently extending the terms of Vincent Kompany, Sergio Agüero, David Silva, Edin Dzeko, Samir Nasri and Aleksandar Kolarov on long-term deals.

Hart, 28, is thought to be relaxed about the situation despite the England goalkeeper entering the final two years of his contract. While he has retained the No1 jersey this season, Manuel Pellegrini spent £6m on Willy Caballero in the summer to provide direct competition for Hart.

Englands Daniel Sturridge out of Switzerland game with thigh injury

Liverpool forward could be out for two to three weeks
FA: He will play no part in the Switzerland match

Danny Welbeck hopes to be granted an opportunity in his favoured central striker role in Englands opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on Monday after Daniel Sturridge was forced to withdraw from the squad after injuring a thigh in training.

The Liverpool forward, one of the national sides brighter performers in Wednesdays friendly win over Norway, had felt discomfort as he trained at St Georges Park on Friday morning and limped out of the session after an early run to be examined by the Football Associations medical staff. He subsequently travelled to a local hospital to undergo a scan, with the results ruling him out of the awkward fixture in Basel.

James Beattie relishes battle to keep Accrington Stanley in League Two

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 09:03 AM PDT

The former England star has no complaints about managing one of the leagues poorest clubs, despite the obstacles in his way

James Beattie puffs out his cheeks as he reflects on the realities of life at Accrington Stanley, a club with the lowest attendances and smallest playing budget in the Football League and where the managers duties include cleaning dogs muck off the training pitch and ringing hotels to negotiate the cheapest rate for the occasional overnight stay. If theres a tougher job in league football I would like to know where it is, Beattie says, smiling. But Ive not gone grey yet.

Beattie looks, and sounds, remarkably chipper in the circumstances, especially as Accrington are in 92nd place, bottom of League Two after picking up only one point from their opening five matches. It is exactly the same position Accrington were in this time last year, when they went 12 league games without a win before Beattie, in his first season in charge, engineered a remarkable turnaround that saw them climb to 15th place. If you had started the season in October, when we won our first game, we would have finished sixth, Beattie says.
