Van Gaal not shocked by MK Dons defeat Posted: 26 Aug 2014 05:49 PM PDT The Dutchman named a largelyyouthful side, which nonetheless included first-team regulars such as David de Gea, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck, for the second-round clash. However, his charges were comfortably beaten by their third-tier opponents as Van Gaal's wait for a victory as United manager continues. With one point from two games in the top flight, Van Gaal called for patience as he seeks to rebuild confidence at Old Trafford followinga difficult 12 months, which saw predecessor David Moyes depart after less than a season in charge. "I'm not shocked because I know what can happen," the former Netherlands coach said. "We had nine injuries and played again within 48 hours [of Sunday's 1-1 draw away to Sunderland]. So I had to look at the second team and youth players for this match. "It's very difficult when you start as a manager in the Premier League with a home match loss, then a draw and you lose in a cup match. "It'sdifficult for the fans to believe in the philosophy of Louis van Gaal but you have to do that because I'm here to build up a new team and a new team isn't built in one month." United had been boosted earlier in the day by the arrival of Argentina international Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid on a five-year deal. Having broken the British transfer record to sign the midfielder for£59.7 million, Van Gaal hinted he may alter his formation to suit the 26-year-old. "The process needs time and we shall see if, with Di Maria, we have to change the system or not," he added. "I spoke with him [Di Maria] in our hotel before we left for this game. He said he was physically well and will train with us tomorrow, but I have to see if he can play against Burnley." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
League Cup Wrap: United hammered by MK Dons Posted: 26 Aug 2014 03:42 PM PDT If the ignominy of entering the competition at this phase for the first time since 1995 was not bad enough, United - who have begun their start to life under Van Gaal with a home defeat at Swansea Cityfollowed by 1-1 draw versus Sunderland - fared even worse than 19 years ago on Tuesday. Beaten 3-0 at home, and 4-3, on aggregate by York City then, Unitedwent one worse as doubles from Will Grigg and Benik Afobe earned MK Donsan incrediblewin. There were no such issues for fellow Dutch Premier League newcomer Ronald Koeman as he grabbed his first win when goals from Jack Cork and Graziano Pelle overcame Millwall 2-0. United were not the only Premier League side beaten by lower-league opposition, West Ham United, Leicester City and Burnley also succumbing. New boy Enner Valencia missed the crucial penalty for West Ham in a 5-4 shootout win for Sheffield United that followed a 1-1 draw in normal time. Leicester, meanwhile, were beaten by Shrewsbury Town, Andy Mangan's stunning free-kick the only goal. At Turf Moor,Burnleywent down by the same scoreline as Atdhe Nuhiu's late penalty saw Sheffield Wednesday progress. Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Swansea City did not endure the same fate. Newcastle beat Gillingham 1-0 thanks to John Egan's own goal, Palace overcame Walsall 3-0 through Dwight Gayle's hat-trick and Bafetimbi Gomis' first Swansea goal helped the Welsh club to overcome Rotherham United. Things went much more smoothly for Championship clubs, with Bournemouth beating Northampton Town3-0, Fulham overcoming Brentford 1-0 and Bolton Wanderers triumphing 3-2 at Crewe Alexandra. There were also wins for bitter rivals Derby County and Nottingham Forest, who beat Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. Middlesbrough and Norwich City had few problems brushing aside Preston North End and Crawley Town, each easing to 3-1 successes. Cardiff City were made to work harder, edging a five-goal thriller at Port Vale 3-2, and Reading won 1-0 at Scunthorpe United. In the night's other games, Brighton andHove Albion triumphed4-2 at Swindon Town and Doncaster Rovers beat Watford 2-1 away from home. Robinson hails ridiculous Man United upset Posted: 26 Aug 2014 03:05 PM PDT A brace apiece from Will Grigg and substituteBenik Afobe secured a famous and crushingwin for the League One outfit, humbling Louis van Gaal on his first taste of the competition. The defeat compounds Van Gaal's stuttering start to his reign at Old Trafford and the former Netherlands coach remains without a competitive win. But Robinson was quick to point out the plethora of positives for his side, who reached the third round for just the second time since their move to Milton Keynes in 2004 in front of the stadium:mk's first sell-out crowd. "We spoke before the game about their quality. The first 15 minutes, we found it difficult and looked disjointed but the players turned it round," he told Sky Sports. "I'm a little bit in shock... it's ridiculous and something dreams are made of. We've got two strikers fighting for the number nine shirt and they both scored twice each. "They've set standards they now have to live up to. My players and my football club, and the city in general, deserve credit tonight. "Manchester United are massive, people will always want to pick bones in their side but my players deserve an awful lot of credit. "We worked hard all week, sometimes you work hard and don't get what you deserve but the players did really, really well. It has been a perfect evening." Van Gaal: Man United rebuild will take time Posted: 26 Aug 2014 02:42 PM PDT In a fixture that many expected United to win with consummate ease, Van Gaal's men were humiliatinglyknocked out of the League Cup at the second-round stage by their League One opponents. Thatthe Dutchman made 10 changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Sunderland in the Premier Leagueon Sunday should have meant little, with a teamfeaturing the likes of Jonny Evans, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck fielded. Yet things did not go to planat stadium:mk on Tuesdayas the hosts sealed a memorable triumph, Will Grigg and Benik Afobe both scoring doubles. Despite still seeking his first win after three games, Van Gaal has called for belief in his methods. He told Sky Sports: "They (the supporters) have to believe in our philosophy. We are building up a team, which you cannot do in one month or even one year. "It is very disappointing but I hope they shall maintain their confidence in the club and our philosophy. That philosophy takes time." Van Gaal, who refused to be overly critical of his side, blamed the defeat on errors at critical points. He added: "It was a matter of making errors at the wrong moments. When you see the goals, I believe they were big errors that you cannot make. "I don't regret making the changes. You have to analyse the problem and I think the changes were good. "I have seen them trying to do their best so you cannot expect more. We were unlucky because they scored because of our errors." The result also took the gloss off a day that saw United break the British transfer record to sign Real Madrid's Angel di Maria for £59.7million. Speaking about the new arrival, Van Gaal added: "I think he shall contribute very much in our way of playing. "He is a creative player and I can change the system with him because he can play on the wing and in midfield." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
League Cup: MK Dons 4 Man United 0 Posted: 26 Aug 2014 01:57 PM PDT Will Grigg and Benik Afobe were the heroes at stadium:mk on Tuesday in the second-round clash, scoring a brace apiece for the League One side tofurtheraddto the woes of United's much-anticipated new boss. With a 2-1 home reverse to Swansea City and 1-1 draw at Sunderland representing a poor start to United's Premier Leaguecampaign, Van Gaal must have viewed this fixture as an opportunity to grab a simple opening win. But even the feel-good factor generated by the completion ofAngel di Maria's British transfer record move to Old Trafford in the hours leading up to kick-off could not bring an improvement on the pitch. The last time they entered the competition at this phase, in 1995, United suffered the ignominy of losing a two-legged tie 4-3 to York City - including a 3-0 reverse at Old Trafford. And memories of such embarrassment were brought back to the fore as MK Dons outworked and, most damningly, out-passed their illustrious opponents to secure a famous triumph. A United team loaded with players determined to catch Van Gaal's eye started confidently as Danny Welbeck, in particular, caused problems. The visitors' endeavour almost brought immediate reward, Nick Powellcurling just over the crossbar. MK Dons came back into the game, although their possession was not producing opportunities. However, Karl Robinson's men were gifted an opener in the 25th minute by a Jonny Evans howler. The centre-back's pass from defence was intercepted by Ben Reeves, whose simple ball left Grigg with the easiest of tap-ins. That seemed to knock the wind out of United's sails, although Powell threatened to reinvigorate his side when firing just wide from range with the outside of his foot. Things almost went from bad to worse after the interval, MK Dons denied a penalty when Evans appeared to have handled in the area. But United could not take advantage, Welbeck curling a powerful effort just wide of the post. And their misery was compounded in the 63rd minute, Reeves and Grigg combining again in a fine move that ended with the latter cleverly chesting home his team-mate's perfect left-wing cross. Any thoughts of a United revival were snuffed out by Grigg's replacement Afobe, who then slid home easily after being picked out by Danny Green. James Wilson almost levelled, United's first shot on target coming in the 72nd minute when David Martin produced a superb one-handed save to deny the highlytouted striker's 20-yard strike. Adnan Januzajrattled the post, but, if anything, Van Gaal's side were lucky not to lose by more with David de Gea forced to turn away Dean Lewington's cross. Relief at that quickly turned to further despair, however, as Afobe bundled his way into the box and volleyed home to create a scarcely believable scoreline. Hope continued to come in the shape of Wilson, whose header again forced Martin into an excellent save, although that was scant consolation for Van Gaal. United break transfer record for Di Maria Posted: 26 Aug 2014 11:09 AM PDT Di Maria has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with United after the clubs agreed a feejust under £10m more than Chelsea paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres to set the previous UK benchmark in January 2011. The midfielder said:"I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for. "Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started." Unitedhad been consistently linked with a move for Argentina midfielder Di Maria throughout the transfer window, with the former Benfica man having slipped down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu following the close-season arrivals of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos. The 26-year-old becomes the Premier League club's fourth new recruit of the transfer window after the purchases of Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo. New manager Louis van Gaal is said to be keen on making further signings before next Monday's deadline, with Daley Blind and Nigel de Jong also reported to be on his shopping list. Di Maria, who played a key role inhelpingArgentina reach this year's World Cup final, scored 36 goals in 190 appearances for Real after joining from Benfica in June 2010. Much speculation has raged over exactly where Di Maria will fit into the 3-4-1-2 system utilised by United so far this season. While not revealing any details on how the Argentinianwill fit into his plans, Van Gaal expressed delight at the capture. The Dutchman added:"Angel is a world-class midfielder but most importantly he is a team player. There is no doubting his immense natural talent. "He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defence. His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Bayern complete deal for Romas Benatia Posted: 26 Aug 2014 08:38 AM PDT The Bundesliga champions had been heavily linked with centre-back Benatiaafter Javi Martinez suffered a serious knee injury in their DFL Supercup defeat to Borussia Dortmund. And Bayern announced on Wednesday that the 27-year-oldMorocco international has put pen to paper on a long-term deal at the Allianz Arena after they agreed a fee thought to be in the region of €30 million with Roma. Speculation over Benatia's future had been rife throughout the transfer window, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all rumoured to be interested in him. However, Bayern's need for another defensive option following Martinez's injury - which is expected to keep him out for the majority of the season - has led to him moving to Bavaria. Benatia joined Roma from Udinese in July last year and enjoyed an outstanding campaign in the Italian capital, making 33 Serie A appearances as Rudi Garcia's side finished second behind Juventus.
