United fans must be patient, says Van Gaal

Van Gaal watched on as his side beat Valencia 2-1 in a friendly at Old Trafford on Tuesday - their sixth win from as many matches in pre-season. Despite the Dutchman's perfect record in charge so far, Van Gaal warned United fans that there was still work to be done as they prepare for their season opener against Swansea City on Saturday. "Old Trafford was fantastic. I come on the pitch and they are shouting and screaming your name," Van Gaal said. "It is also a big pressure as they expect a lot and you cannot change everything in three or four weeks. "The players cannot change either so we have to wait and see and develop and we need time but we have won every game until now and that is fantastic when you see our opponents so we have great confidence for Swansea City." Van Gaal insisted their performance on Tuesday against La Liga opposition was their worst of the close-season, despite Marouane Fellaini's late winner ensuring their pre-season remained blip-free. "The main thing is that we have won in spite of playing our worst game. We made a lot of wrong choices, wrong passes and we didn't press too much," the former Netherlands boss said. "But in spite of that I think Valencia is a very good team, very comfortable on the ball so it is not easy to press but in spite of that we have dominated the game and at the end we are the winner because we are fighting until the last minute and that is also a good signal. "It is a start. We had four debuts so I am pleased we have won the game against a very good team."

Rooney confirmed as new Man United captain

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 03:06 PM PDT

Vidic departed for Inter at the end of last season after his contract expired, vacating the captain's armband at Old Trafford. And the club confirmed on Tuesday that Rooney was the man coach Louis van Gaalhad chosen to lead them into the new season, with Darren Fletcher as his deputy. "For me it's always very important the choice of captain," said Van Gaal."Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. "I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy. "He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role." Rooney captained United to a 2-1 friendly victory over Valencia on Tuesday and declared his pride at landing his new role. "It is a huge honour for me – and for my family – to be named captain of this great club," he added."It is a role I will perform with great pride. "Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me. "I look forward to leading the team out on Saturday at our first match of the new season." United begin their Premier League campaign at home to Swansea City on Saturday.

Van Gaal tastes success on Old Trafford bow

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 01:30 PM PDT

The Dutchman took charge of the 20-time English champions on home soil for the first time after replacing David Moyes. And United ultimatelymade it an occasion to remember as Marouane Fellaini -one of last season's main targets for on-fieldderision - grabbed a late winner after Rodrigo had cancelled out Darren Fletcher's opener. After finding success with a 3-4-1-2 formation as Netherlands boss at the World Cup, Van Gaal has continued to utilisethe tactic with United and their players were given a first chance to use it on familiar turf. Wayne Rooney was named captain and paired with Javier Hernandez, but the England man's first-half penalty miss threatened to spoil Van Gaal's welcome party. However, a vintage show of United grit after the break ensures thefeel-good factor around the club remains in full flow ahead of their Premier League opener against Swansea City on Saturday. Despite much pomp and ceremony surrounding the game, it got off to a tepid start, though United looked solid in defence and incisive in midfield with Van Gaal's system becoming more familiar. Ander Herrera scuffed a 24th-minute volley wide, which sparked the remainder of the first half into action. First, Sofiane Feghouli's low effort was comfortably pouched by David de Gea, before United were given the chance to move ahead just after the half-hour when Rooney was felled by Antonio Barragan under Ashley Young's cross. Rooney stepped up and lashed a low effort to Alves' right, but the Brazilian sprung superbly to tip the effort onto the post. Rooney had a half-chance to atone for his miss just before half-time, yet a heavy touch allowed Alves to mop up. It did not take long after the interval for United fans to be on their feet, however, as Young's corner was cleared to the edge of the area for Fletcher to fire home via a Rodrigo deflection. Valencia showed no sign of being happy to cede the game and Hernandez had to be alert to nod Rodrigo's flicked header off the line. The chance prompted a change in momentum and Valencia duly equalised with 20 minutes to go as United's defensive frailties from last season made a return. Tom Cleverley horribly miscued an attempted clearance from a free-kick into the penalty area, giving Benfica loanee Rodrigo a simple finish from six yards. Pablo Piatti scuffed wide from inside the six-yard box and Hernandez saw another miscued clearance squirt across the face of goal as panic set in for the hosts. Yet Fellaini looked in fine form after coming on as a late substitute and he emerged as an unlikely hero, pouncing on Alves' error under a high cross to roll home the winner.

Hodgson close to choosing new England captain

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 01:17 AM PDT

Hodgson must decide who to hand the armband toafterSteven Gerrard announced his retirement from international football following England's disappointing World Cup campaign. Lampard was vice-captain in Brazil despite not starting the first two matches, while Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is one of the favourites for the role. England play their first fixture afterthe World Cup against Norway at Wembley on September 2. And while Hodgson revealedLampard may lead England out for that game, he believes the 36-year-old's main focus will be on helping Manchester City during his loan spell before starting his new venture with New York Cityin 2015. "Frank is the vice-captain and there is Wayne Rooney," Hodgson told Sky Sports. Asked if he had chosen his new skipper and whether they had been told, Hodgson replied: "Yes to the first part and no to the second. "We don't need to compare to other European countries, let's just stay as England. I have got a big job ahead of me I believe to choose that captain and that's what I'm working on. "I have half-chosen him. The person who is captain for the Norway game will be the person I will be designating to hopefully be the captain in 2016 [at the European Championships in France]. "At the moment, Frank's concentration has to be on this Manchester City job and in New York, where he could very well be captain. "I don't think I can expect him to say 'please make me captain because in 2018 [at the World Cup]I want to lead the team out', because I don't think he will be thinking that himself. "But having said that, if he is with us in the first game, who knows. Then he could captain us that day." The 67-year-old also reflected on England's performance at this year's World Cup, where they were eliminated at the group stages without a win, adding: "[There is] still great disappointment, and the feeling of enormous frustration because the preparations had gone very well. "We have a lot of rebuilding to do not only of rebuilding our team but also rebuilding all the faith that people showed us. "We have to look forward to 2016 and make certain that we don't allow it to happen again and hope we don't have the same lack of fortune as well that we perhaps suffered as well."
