Rodgers: Former Southampton trio to settle quicker

Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert were brought in by Rodgers as the Northern Irishman looks to strengthen his squad in a bid to challenge for multiple trophies. Southamptons offensive, aggressive way should mean the three signings settle quicker to Liverpools similar style, according to Rodgers. I think the advantage of taking them is that they understand how we work, he told a news conference on Sunday as his side prepare to face Manchester United in the International Champions Cup final. All the players we have brought in were done so because of their profile. Southampton played in a really offensive, aggressive way and the players that have come in will adapt that little bit quicker to that. There are obviously pressures. If youre playing for Liverpool, theres a different adaptation altogether, but in terms of the football style, that will make it easier. I think if you have three players coming in from the same club, of course it always helps on that first day walking into the changing room. Ultimately theyll gain respect because theyre good players, and thats why theyre at Liverpool. Hopefully they can show that over their career here. Under Louis van Gaal, United have impressed in pre-season after their struggles during the 2013-14 campaign. Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson said his sides approach in Miami would be the same as their previous friendlies. I feel as though all of the games in pre-season, our tempos been right, he said. Weve approached the game well and this ones no different for us. Well approach it in the same way, so everybodys looking forward to it.

Van Gaal to decide on squad

Posted: 03 Aug 2014 07:08 PM PDT

Van Gaal vowed to give every player a chance to prove their worth before adding to the arrivals of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw ahead of Uniteds Premier League opener against Swansea City on August 16. The Dutchman has stuck to his word, utilising the entire 26-man travelling squad in the four consecutive wins against the Los Angeles Galaxy, Roma, Inter and Real Madrid in the USA. Speaking in the lead up to Mondays International Champions Cup final against rivals Liverpool in Miami, Van Gaal said he was close to making a decision with Marouane Fellaini, Javier Hernandez, Shinji Kagawa and Wilfried Zaha facing uncertain futures at Old Trafford. I shall make judgements. After this tour I shall make judgements because I let all the players play and I know now more than before the tour, Van Gaal told reporters. But also its a little bit soon to judge. But in football you have to judge because you have to give a chance to the player to make a transfer when I see that his prospects to play arent so high. Then you have to say it. And you have to say it in advance. When it is August 31, it is too late. So I shall say to the players what I think after this tour. To them, but not to you.

United duo reveal Van Gaal impact

Posted: 03 Aug 2014 08:22 AM PDT

United have impressed in pre-season, reaching the final of the International Champions Cup in the United States after a 3-1 victory over Real Madrid on Saturday. That was the latest sign of improvement under Van Gaal, who officially replaced David Moyes at Old Trafford last month after leading Netherlands to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Brazil. The Dutchman has already stamped his authority on the squad ahead of the 2014-15 season, with United looking to respond to a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Premier League last termthat saw them missout on European football. And Fletcher believes they are already showing signs of being able to challenge with the best sidesagain under Van Gaal. He [Van Gaal] demands a lot, but the players are responding to to it and enjoying playing in the new system and playing under him, said the Scotland international. Weve got a fantastic team spirit -we were talking about it last night amongst ourselves. Were all close and were all pulling in the right direction and we all want the best for Manchester United. Were disappointed with where we finished in the league [last season] and as a a result of that Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, they all finished above of us. Were disappointed but next season we want to show what were capable of and hopefully we can can do that. That is a sentiment echoed by De Gea, with the Spain goalkeeper revealing that Van Gaals arrival has already had a significant impact on the mentality within the squad. He [van Gaal] is hard when he has to be. Really, he has surprised me, said De Gea. He is a great head coach and he is providing the team with a very good character. You can see it so far. I think we are totally different from last season. I think a lot of the big teams have been reinforced very well. We have also have been reinforced, with some players like Ander Herrera, and Luke Shaw on the left side. Right now, it could well be that we have one of the best squads.
