PICTURE: Marca edit picture to hide Red dominance Posted: 02 Aug 2014 03:55 PM PDT Manchester United beat European champions Real Madrid 3-1 in front of a 109,318 crowd at Big House in Ann Arbor. This was the fourth largest attendance for Manchester United in the history of the club and the ground was clearly dominated by red shirts. However, Madrid based sports paper, Marca, photoshopped the picture of the crowd to give the impression that there were more Real Madrid fans. Laughable really. |
LIVE BLOG: Manchester United v Real Madrid Posted: 02 Aug 2014 12:39 PM PDT Good evening comrades, and welcome to Republik of Mancunia’s continued live blog coverage of United’s pre season campaign. Opponents don’t come much bigger than Real Madrid, and they will serve as an excellent test of Van Gaal’s progress with the squad at his disposal so far |
Ronaldo: I loved it at United – it’s crazy they still sing my name Posted: 02 Aug 2014 09:23 AM PDT Ahead of tonight’s game against Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo has talked of his fond feelings for the club and, as always, left the door open to a possibility of returning. "I loved it there, I was 18 years old, I won everything there, the people treat me like a god there so I appreciate and the future nobody knows,” he said. “It's crazy that they still sing my name. I remember when we played there against Manchester in the Champions League, they killed me, my heart was so happy, and fantastic moments and I appreciate this club, for me it's one of the best clubs in the world and I have passion for this club. Some players I am still in contact with because when I was there I create a good relationship with everybody, not just the players, all the staff around and it was like my second family there too so I'll not forget that the people treat me good. I'll not forget it so I appreciate it a lot. I love Manchester, to be back, I never know, you never know, football you never know. Of course I'm happy at Real Madrid. It's my home, it's my club but Manchester treat me unbelievable so we never know." |
Hiddink: I will continue Van Gaal’s excellent work Posted: 02 Aug 2014 01:30 AM PDT Guus Hiddink has taken over from Louis van Gaal as manager of the Dutch national team. The legendary coach has sung the praises of the efforts of the team at the World Cup, with them finishing third after beating the host nation Brazil, and insists he will continue the policy of his predecessor – mixing youth with experience. “I applaud the whole team, which performed excellently,” he said. “It was a very realistic approach there (in Brazil).’ Hiddink declined to give specifics of his likely starting XI, but noted that Van Gaal had brought in a crop of talented youngsters to mix with experienced stars. “That policy will be continued. I’m not going to get further into names.” Hiddink said he wants to combine the “Dutch school” of attacking and possession-based play with “the instinct to survive” — meaning to play defensively and wait for counterattacks when necessary. |
PICTURE: Van Nistelrooy gets Holland job Posted: 02 Aug 2014 01:00 AM PDT Guus Hiddink has replaced Louis van Gaal as Holland manager and has invited former Manchester United striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, to be a part of his coaching staff. Van Gaal had Patrick Kluivert on his staff when he was the boss. Whilst in charge, Robin van Persie replaced Kluivert as the all time top scorer for Holland. Ruud is the fourth highest scorer for Holland, behind Van Persie, Kluivert and Dennis Bergkamp. Having retired from playing in 2012, Van Nistelrooy took on a job coaching the U-17s at his former club, PSV. He is now the assistant coach of Holland along with Danny Blind, the father of Daley Blind, who will be taking over as manager in 2016 when Hiddink steps down in two years time. |
