STATS: How much have United spent in comparison to Chelsea and Manchester City?

Manchester United broke the British transfer fee yesterday when they signed Angel Di Maria for £59.7m. Plenty of newspapers have been questing how United have managed to spend so much and yet still the fans are unhappy with the Glazers and Ed Woodward.

Plenty of tables have been published showing the comparative net spend between United and other European clubs, suggesting that United fans don’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to complaining about what has been spent.

Manchester United sold Cristiano Ronaldo for a world breaking record transfer fee of £80m. That summer United spent £21m on players and the following summer it was £27m.

When you consider that Tottenham Hotspur spent over £103m in the summer they sold Bale, Caulker, Huddlestone, Dempsey, Parker and Defoe for £113m, United’s lack of investment is fairly startling.

You can compare ‘net spend’ tables all day long. In this time period, United kept the likes of Giggs, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Scholes, Berbatov, Park, O’Shea and Brown beyond their peak, meaning their value decreased dramatically.

Over the past six seasons, Chelsea have spent £108.4m more than United and City have spent £180.65m more. When you then take in to account that United are the most profitable club in England, and one of the most profitable sports “franchises” in the world, it’s insane that the club has been allowed to, season by season, fall behind its’ competitors.

The enemy are the Glazers. Don’t blame Ferguson, Moyes or Van Gaal for this. Everything we’ve become is because of the owners. The sooner this parasite leaves the club, the sooner we will retain our rightful position in world football.
