United duo heading for Spain?

hernandez and kagawaJavier Hernandez and Shinji Kagawa could soon be heading for the Old Trafford’s exit door, with Atletico Madrid thought to be considering a double swoop for the pair, who have largely been on the fringe of Louis Van Gaal’s squad this pre-season.

The United manager said on Monday that he was keen to trim his squad ahead of the start of the season and while United are still looking to resolve the future of Marouane Fellaini, Anderson and Nani, both Hernandez and Kagawa could be a step closer to leaving the club, with the Spanish champions a likely destination.

The Guardian reports that Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is keen to sign the United duo and is ready to table an offer in the region of £25m, as he seeks to rebuild his squad after losing Diego Costa and Luis Filipe to Chelsea earlier this summer.

Kagawa and Hernandez found opportunities hard to come by under David Moyes last season and things haven’t improved this summer, with both players confined to marginal roles in United’s pre-season tour and their days at the club look numbered, albeit for slightly different reasons.

Van Gaal’s public admission that he’ll make 3-5-2 United’s standard formation this season means Kagawa would face stiff competition from Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj in the number 10 position, and with both players likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order the Japanese could again be forced to play out wide, a role he doesn’t like and one in which he’s failed to impress since joining the club.

A return to Borussia Dortmund had been rumoured, but the German outfit’s interest in the Japanese looks to have cooled down leaving Atletico Madrid in pole position in the race to the 25-year-old. Hernandez, meanwhile, has Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck ahead of him the pecking order and he could soon link-up alongside Mario Mandzukic in a whole new Atletico’s striking partnership, after the Champions League’s runners-up lost David Villa and Costa.

Between them, Hernandez and Kagawa managed only 20 Premier League last season and with Van Gaal determined to get rid of the players he deems surplus to requirements, the deal would suit all the parties involved, particularly for United could reinvest the £25m on another signings.
