Four days to create a different United Posted: 28 Aug 2014 11:38 PM PDT
United have already spent over £130m on players and broke the British transfer record by signing Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7m but Van Gaal said the Argentine won’t be the last arrival this summer.
On the departure front, meanwhile, United have Wilfried Zaha joined Crystal Palace on loan on Thursday, becoming the latest player to join the Old Trafford exodus and some of his colleagues could still follow him out of United between now and Monday, as Van Gaal confirmed the overhaul process would not stop until the transfer window shuts. "I had a conversation after lunch with the players and I said, maybe after this weekend we shall have another group because players shall go away and others shall come in," said the United manager. "But I cannot say anything about that [new signings] because it raises the price. The club shall come out when the time is there to announce it. We cannot react on every rumour. “Also, players shall go [from Old Trafford] in the meantime. I said I wanted to judge the players. I gave them every chance and we have done that in the United States [on a pre-season tour] and also with players who had to stay in Manchester because they were injured or later coming in because of the World Cup. "Now I have judged all the players. We know already, in advance, what players we want and sometimes you can have them but sometimes it is also dependent on the club." Van Gaal insisted that, even after Di Maria’s arrival, United can not afford to cut corners in their rebuilding process, though he refused to say whether he was surprised by the task facing him. "That is looking at the past," he said. "That is a question that I don't want to answer. Why? Because I want to show my respect to David Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson. "I think we have to look to the future and that we are doing now, by restoring and rebuilding a new team. That costs time. “I'm sorry to say that for the fans, because the fans are amazing. We were at MK Dons, we lost 4-0 and they were singing and supporting the players. It is fantastic we have such fans and I hope we will fulfil their expectations. "But it's not done in one month, in spite of our wins against Real Madrid and Liverpool in the US in pre-season. But we have to give results and hopefully it starts on Saturday against Burnley." United have struggled to adapt to Van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation, conceding seven goals and scoring just two in the Dutchman’s first three official games in charge, though Van Gaal said he had no intention to ditch the three-man defence in favour of a back four. “I think that we have no problem when the opponent has the ball, because we have defended very well,” he said. “We don’t give any chances away – or very few chances. When you see our matches, I think David De Gea has to deal with two or three balls in a game. “Our problem is when we have the ball. We have to build up the play, and that we have to improve. “So I don’t think our defence is weak – our build-up is still not good enough. We shall improve that, but that needs time.” |

talkSPORT and the Daily Mail suggest Cleverley, who had also attracted interest from Hull, West Ham and Everton could leave the club by the end of the transfer window, as his first team opportunities could shrink even further if, as largely expected, United bolster their midfield options over the next couple of days.
Cleverley enjoyed extremely promising loan spells at Watford and Wigan before returning to Old Trafford ahead of the 2011-12 season, which he began in fashion by delivering a sumptuous performance after coming on at halftime in the Community Shield, as United came back from 2-0 to beat City at Wembley. However, Cleverley has failed to live up to his potential and over the past two seasons his progress has stalled and the 25-year-old has regressed as a player, attracting severe criticism from large section of United supporters. While he isn’t as bad as some say, Cleverley looks constantly out of his depth in a red shirt and his focus on extra curricular activities – his TC23 brand, to be blunt – hasn’t won him many admirers. Selling Cleverley for £8m would represent excellent business for United. |
Number 7 tradition excites Di Maria Posted: 28 Aug 2014 11:00 PM PDT
During his official presentation as Manchester United player, Di Maria said he was eager to follow in the footsteps of the great players who have previously donned the club’s most important shirt, from George Best – though he wore 8 and 11 just as often – to Bryan Robson, from Eric Cantona to David Beckham and Ronaldo himself.
“I was aware of the importance of the No. 7 shirt,” said United’s record signing. “Ronaldo had spoken to me at Real Madrid and told me how important it was. “I wanted to wear this shirt and do as much for the club as Ronaldo and the others could do. “The club also wanted me to wear it so I want to make sure that I live up to it.” “It doesn’t bother me the fact that nearly £60m has been paid for me,” said the Argentine “That is something the club chairmen have to discuss between them. I have come here to work for the club and do the best I can. “I’m very pleased to play for Manchester United, I like th team and I wanted to come here even though they are not playing in the Champions League. “I want to help the team get into the Champions League and I think I can help. I’m very pleased the manager chose me to come here. “United have already won many trophies and are a very big team, and I’ve come in order to help the team raise their game, become an important team again and win many trophies with them.” Di Maria might be one of the best wingers in the world, but Louis Van Gaal stressed the Argentine’s work ethic was just as important as his skills and “When you see his answers [to questions], you can he is a very modest guy and he wants to work,” said Van Gaal after Di Maria was officially unveiled on Thursday. “I am very pleased that we can have such a class player in our squad. We have many class players, but for me it’s also important that he’s a team player and that’s why I like Di Maria. “He is not only class and can accelerate the game for us, but he can also play in the interests of the team, and that’s why we have chosen this player. “He fits in our philosophy. He played in Real Madrid not only as a wide wing player but also in midfield, so that is also a reason why we are convinced he shall succeed” The Argentine assisted 22 goals in 52 games in all competitions last season, but Van Gaal warned United fans against expecting too much too soon from the club’s record signing. “I hope he shall give us good results but we cannot expect, after two days’ training, that he is the miracle as I have already read. No, you have to work for the miracle and he knows that.” |
