Red Rants

Excuse The Negativity.

rp_669062996_bb455f5455.jpgI’m not normally one to moan. Okay, maybe just a little bit. But when news filtered through last night that Mr Wayne Rooney had been announced club captain, my stomach sank, and all the pre-season excitement vanished.

What have we done?

In Wayne Rooney, Manchester United possesses one of the great players in the Premier League, but they also possess one of the most disruptive the club has ever had on it’s books.

Yet we seem to have fallen into this trap of giving him whatever he wants, when he wants it. What is it about him? His talent speaks for itself, but he’s not the be all and end all.

Where was the passion to hold onto Cristiano Ronaldo? A player who lit Old Trafford up and has become one of football’s greatest ever. Where was his crazy pay packet? Where was his captaincy armband to keep him sweet?

I have always, and will always, commend Wayne Rooney’s ability, his fight, his desire, but I will never commend the way he has behaved off the field, the way he treated this great club. Once is perhaps allowed, twice is unforgivable.

From that second occasion, he should have been kept at arms length as a symbol that he’s not bigger than the football club. Instead, he’s been given the ultimate bear hug from the club.

People will say LvG knows what he is doing, that he can control him. Let’s not forget that that was something even the great Sir Alex Ferguson couldn’t do, and rest assured, if he was still at the club, Mr Rooney wouldn’t be.

I finish this rather negative article with a genuine good luck wish to Wayne in his new role for the team, it’s time for him to make up for what he has done and determine whether the status of club legend or selfish leader will be attached to his name come the time he hangs up his boots.

I stand to be corrected on this one and I truly hope I am.

United confirm new captain

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 11:29 PM PDT

Wayne Rooney Manchester UnitedLouis Van Gaal has chosen Manchester United’s captain for this season and, perhaps slightly surprising, Wayne Rooney and not Robin Van Persie is the man the new United manager has chosen to skipper the side in his inaugural campaign at Old Trafford.

The relationship between Van Persie and Van Gaal had many suggesting that the former Arsenal striker would be given the armband this season, particularly given he had captained Holland at  the World Cup but, instead, the honour has gone to Rooney, with Darren Fletcher promoted to the role of vice-captain.

"For me it's always very important the choice of captain. Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy,” said Van Gaal.

"He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role. Darren Fletcher will become the vice-captain.

“Darren is a natural leader and will captain the team when Wayne isn't playing Darren is a very experienced player and a very popular member of the dressing room, I know he will work well alongside Wayne."

"It is a huge honour for me – and for my family – to be named captain of this great club. It is a role I will perform with great pride. Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me,” said Rooney.

I look forward to leading the team out on Saturday at our first match of the new season."

Within 12 months, Fletcher has gone from almost not playing professional football because of his illness to be United vice-captain and the Scotland international admitted it was a great honour.

"I am delighted to have been named as vice-captain. It's a very proud moment for me and my family," said Fletcher.

United close in on £16m defender

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 11:55 AM PDT

marcos rojoManchester United are hopeful to sign Argentina defender Marcos Rojo, as Louis Van Gaal seeks to address his shortage of options in defence.

The Sporting Lisbon defender could cost United around £16m and United don’t consider his contract to be too much of a problem, even though, as it’s common practice in Portuguese football, it might involve third parties.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, the Guardian reported that United have shown interest in the Argentinian, who was in Argentina’s line-up against Germany last month, as the South Americans lost 1-0 to a Mario Gotze goal.

Reports in Portugal suggested that Rojo refused to training on Tuesday and will force a transfer to United over the next couple of days.

Rojo was named in the team of the tournament and with Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling as only options at centre-back after the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, United desperately need to bolster their options at the back.

Mats Hummels and Thomas Vermaelen had both been identified as targets by Van Gaal, but the former is expected to remain at Borussia Dortmund after Jurgen Klopp handed him the captain’s armband and declared the German international “unsellable”, while the latter joined Barcelona last week.

A versatile defender who can operate at centre-back in both a three and a four-man defence, Rojo is quick and tactically diligent and the 24-year-old should fit Van Gaal’s 3-5-2 without particular problems, given he’s previously occupied the role for Argentina.

Meanwhile, the United manager is also monitoring Holland’s international Daley Blind, whose ability to play at left-back, left wing-back and central midfielder, particularly considering United have only Darren Fletcher, Ander Herrera and Tom Cleverley to choose from in midfield.

Michael Carrick is currently nursing an injury, while Marouane Fellaini and Anderson don’t feature in Van Gaal’s plans, therefore United must bolster their options in the middle of the park.
