Posted: 13 Aug 2014 10:05 PM PDT Reports surfaced on Wednesday that Lindegaard - understudy to number one keeper David de Gea - had been told by manager Louis van Gaal that he was free to leave Old Trafford, having made only one Premier League appearance last season. Talk of Lindegaards release increased when the Dane later tweeted: Spread your wings and fly #mufc #fly #manchesterunited. But agent Michael Stensgaard dismissed reports Lindegaard has already left United ahead of Saturdays Premier League opener against Swansea City. It has absolutely nothing to do with the truth, Stensgaard told The Guardian. Weve had a very good dialogue with Man United and we talked about the prospect of [Anders] getting the chance to play and, obviously with De Gea [there], the prospect that Anders should go out and find a club where he should play. We sort of agreed that we could look into opportunities. So its not that United are kicking him out or anything. Its a very constructive dialogue on how the future should look. Then in good co-operation we agreed that we would look into the opportunities. The most important thing is that its the right thing for Anders and the right thing for the club as well thats very important. Stensgaard also said there is a possibility Lindegaard could still be at Old Trafford when the transfer window closes. If the case is that we do not find the right club both for Anders and for Man United because this is very important then Anders will stay and hell have his heart at the club, he added. Hes a lifelong Man United fan and hes very loyal to the club. |
Man United to visit MK Dons in League Cup Posted: 13 Aug 2014 02:52 PM PDT After missing out on European football with a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League last season, United entered Wednesday's draw alongside the other 12 top-flight sides not involved in UEFA Champions League or Europa League action this term. Jagielka backs Rooney for England captaincy Posted: 13 Aug 2014 11:09 AM PDT Rooney was selected as the man to lead United into the upcoming Premier League campaign by new manager Louis van Gaal on Tuesday. The England captaincy is now vacant after Steven Gerrard retiredfrom international football following England's dismal group stage exit at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. And Everton captain Jagielka believes Rooney is the perfect personto succeed the Liverpool star in the role asEngland prepare to head into their qualifying campaign forthe 2016 UEFA European Championship. "It looks like Wayne's going to be the main candidate for it, so I don't see why not," said Jagielka at the official Premier League launch on Wednesday. "If you look at the way he's matured over the last few years, obviously there's games where he probably does get a little too heated up, but that's what we love about the way he plays - his passion. "And I'm sure the England fans would love that as well. "I think it's definitely a good decision for Manchester United to make him captain and I think the way he's progressed over the last few years, settling down with a family and all sorts, I think he'd be a great choice as England captain." England host Norway in a friendly on September 2 before starting their qualification campaign for Euro 2016 with a visit to Switzerland six days' later. Hamstrung Shaw ruled out for four weeks Posted: 13 Aug 2014 10:32 AM PDT The 19-year-old, who arrived at Old Trafford in a big-money move from Southampton in June, was not involved as United defeated Valencia 2-1 in their final pre-season friendly on Tuesday. And the club confirmed on Wednesday that Shaw could be sidelined for around four weeks. England international Shaw recently faced criticism from new United manager Louis van Gaal over his fitness levels, with the Dutchman saying at the time:"He is OK, but I am always a trainer-coach who sees individuals and what they need. "He needs to be fit and is not very fit orfit enough to do what I want. He needs to train individually until he is fit." It now looks as though Shaw will have to wait to impress Van Gaal in a competitive fixture as he races to recover from this injury setback. Swansea duo return for Man United opener Posted: 13 Aug 2014 06:24 AM PDT The duowere absent for the Welsh club's closing pre-season friendly against Villarreal, which ended in a 3-0 defeat, but are back in contention for the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday. Dyer's wife went into labour prior to Saturday'smatch and the couple were then able to celebrate the arrival of their new son Shea. Routledge, meanwhile, missed out with a minor foot injury, but is back in training after having an injection to cure the problem. The pair face renewed competition for places in Garry Monk's starting XI this season following the arrival of Ecuador World Cup star Jefferson Montero. The return of Dyer and Routledgeleaves Swansea with just three injury worries ahead of the top-flight curtain-raiser, with Leon Britton, Marvin Emnes and Jay Fulton all suffering with knee complaints. BotN season preview: Protracted transfer sagas, adopted pandas personalised jelly Posted: 13 Aug 2014 04:00 AM PDT Liverpool Liverpool are out to repeat last season's title challenge, if possible without the devastating late capitulation that will haunt everyone involved for years to come. They will have to do without Luis Suarez, whose goals will be missed, but also his affable, humble, dedication to the cause. Manager: Brendan Rodgers has brought tactically advanced, entertaining football back to Liverpool but is under pressure to make his team more ruthless after infamously shipping three late goals to Crystal Palace at a crucial stage in the season because their players looked sad and couldn't afford a nice kit like theirs. The Liverpool boss has confessed that Louis van Gaal was his idol and we can expect him to imitate the Dutchman's toupee-esque hairstyle. Key clash: Southampton, 17th August. The addition of all of Southampton's players to the squad has helped give Liverpool more strength in depth and could give them the upper hand when they come to face Southampton. If they were a spice they would be... Turmeric. Prediction: After last season's overachievement, Liverpool will be brought back down to earth. Unable to fill the void created by the departure of Luis Suarez, Rodgers' side will lack a cutting edge too frequently and drop points in tight games. 7th. Manchester City The challenge for the reigning champions will be juggling their Premier League and Champions League commitments while also remembering to bake birthday cakes for key players. The true test will come next spring when the Champions League enters the knockout stage, the Premier League race hots up and Yaya Toure demands a jelly with his name on it. Manager: As well as delivering the Premier League, Manuel Pellegrini has conducted himself with a quiet dignity and grace under fire that has won the disdain and suspicion of fellow managers, players and pundits alike. Tactics: All of Manchester City's 750 players are arguably potential match-winners and their success last season owed much to their ability to rest players for seven months at a time. If they were a late Romantic chamber music movement they would be... Sergei Taneyev's Piano Quartet in E major, Opus 20, Movement II. Prediction: Eliaquim Mangala could struggle to adapt to English football and Martin Demichelis remains suspect in a side that can look fragile at the back on occasion. City will be spread thin in attempting to conquer Europe and won't be able to maintain their grip on the Premier League. 7th. Manchester United Manchester United's fans will look to Louis van Gaal to restore pride to a club that suffered humiliation last season. Van Gaal has already swung the axe in the Manchester United dressing room and may face an injury crisis should he need to call upon any of the victims. Key player: Arturo Vidal / Juan Cuadrado (delete as appropriate) was the big-money move that United fans were praying for to invigorate their midfield. The Chilean / Colombian international will breathe new life into a midfield that was starved of creativity and fans will just be happy that the incredibly tedious protracted saga / incredibly tedious protracted saga of his signature ended well. Last season: David Moyes was given the unenviable task of stamping his mark on Sir Alex Ferguson's team, and he did so emphatically with fans universally agreeing his Manchester United was unrecognisable from United of old. If they were a mannerism they would be… Frequent stealthy glances at the clock. Prediction: Even Van Gaal won't be able to deliver immediate results with a squad in transition, leaving United to face their worst season since the fateful 2013/14 campaign. 7th. Newcastle United Newcastle have entered a period of stagnation and although Alan Pardew has been held accountable by many fans, he hasn't been helped by poor transfer dealings. Despite the best efforts of Joe Kinnear, Newcastle's only signing last season was an adopted panda, which remained in China although the club received photos to pin up on the fridge. Last season: The season started well but the loss of Yohan Cabaye in January and Pardew's subsequent descent into nihilistic existentialism, followed by his headbutting phase, saw fans become so enraged that many put their shirts on in protest. Star signing: Newcastle will be hoping that they can finally replace Yohan Cabaye with Remy Cabella, who is the supermarket own brand of Cabaye, without anyone noticing the difference. If they were a font, they would be… Courier Prediction: Pardew's shrewd signings will succeed in erasing the memories of a testing 2013/14 season, but the squad will narrowly lack the strength in depth necessary to kick on into the European qualification spots. 7th. PART ONEArsenal, Aston Villa, Burnley and Chelsea - Fabregas impersonators, psychotic cops and too many trophies PART TWOCrystal Palace, Everton, Hull and Leicester - Interrogation suites, hair transplants Steve Bruce's bone structure This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Rojo disciplined as Sporting exit looms Posted: 13 Aug 2014 02:43 AM PDT The Argentina defender was reported to have missed training on Tuesday to try and force a move to Manchester United but Carvalho insists he will not be forced into letting him go. Rojo's performances during the World Cup have increased interest in his signature, and the Old Trafford club have reportedly agreed a deal to secure the 24-year-old. In-demand forward Islam Slimani has similarly been punished - with Leicester City and Stoke City among those linked to the Algeria man. Carvalho confirmed that both players havebeen disciplined by the club and will not feature in the opening weekend of the Primeira Liga against Academica. The president hopes both players will respect their contracts in the Portuguese capital but did concede their actions could lead to departures. "There are two players who are under disciplinary proceedings, which are Slimani and Rojo," Carvalho told the club's official television channel. "Both have three-year contracts. Sporting does not give in to blackmail, pressures, interest of agents nor attitudes that disrespect the group. "On Saturday they cannot play. "Let's see how long this process will take, it may take a little time, could last a long time, but it will not be resolved by Saturday. "The process may end with the departure of the players or they may end up having to fulfil their three-year contract." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Docherty: Van Gaal under new pressure at United Posted: 12 Aug 2014 11:31 PM PDT With the new Premier League season looming, United come into the campaign in the unfamiliar position of requiring drastic improvement. Champions 12 months ago, United suffered a catastrophic 2013-14 under David Moyes - the Scot sacked before the season was out as United recorded a record-lowPremier League finish of seventh Van Gaalguided the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup in Brazil last month, and has now been tasked with returning the 20-time English champions to winning ways. Docherty, who managed United between 1972 and 1977 -during which time he won the Second Division title and the FA Cup - believes the Dutchman's impressive CV will do little to prepare him for the weight of expectation placed upon his shoulders. "Only time will tell because managing Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich is a different kettle of fish from Manchester United," he told Perform. "If you finish second at Old Trafford it's a bad season for you. It's the biggest and best league in the world but it's the most demanding. "The good thing in his favour is he has the money to implement new signings, whereas a lot of managers don't have that." Even so, after missing out on European qualification altogether in 2013-14, Docherty believes a top-four finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League will be United's aim this time around. "Top four I think is achievable. And, if he gets that, he'll have done very, very well indeed and then he can kick on from there," he said. "He's brought in his own staff. I think there's been far too much made of the class of 92 - I think there's too much sentimentality in that. "Van Gaal's done well, he hasn't come in and panicked, he's taken his time. He's sussed out the strengths and weaknesses of the players that he's been left with and so far he's done a very good job." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
