Arsène Wenger says new striker not essential for Arsenal

Arsène Wenger hints defensive arrivals more likely
Arsenal manager refuses to panic over new striker

Arsène Wenger has said Arsenals hopes this season do not rest on signing a striker before the closure of the transfer window on Monday night, even though he has lost his main forward, Olivier Giroud, to a fractured tibia until the new year.

The pressure on Wenger to add more firepower to his squad increased after the extent of Girouds injury was confirmed and it would be seen as an unnecessary risk for Arsenal not to recruit a forward. Given that Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell are yet to prove themselves at the highest level and Wenger does not believe that Lukas Podolski is suited to being the focal point of his attack, there does not appear to be much of an argument against Arsenal signing another striker.

Louis van Gaal: I can revive Manchester United step by step

Burnleys Sean Dyche says changes will take time

Louis van Gaals answer was short and will sound the sweetest of music to worried Manchester United fans. No. No. I am sorry, the manager said, requiring only five words to discard the notion he could ever doubt his own ability.

Yet there should be no mistake: now is the time for Van Gaal to prove his brilliance. As the 20-times champions roll into Turf Moor to face Burnley in Saturdays early kick-off Van Gaal enters full fire-fighting mode only three games into his tenure.

What made Liverpools Mario Balotelli the man he is today?

The striker who is set to make his Liverpool debut on Sunday was adopted and grew up without cultural reference points that most take for granted
Henderson claims Liverpool can cope without Suárez
Liverpool to face Real Madrid and Basel

Another town, another team, yet another fresh start for Mario Balotelli. Less than a week after completing a £16m move from Milan, the Italy striker is expected to make his Liverpool debut on Sunday lunchtime at White Hart Lane. The Reds will be his fourth club in the space of five years.

Balotelli believes he has found an environment where he can thrive. He told reporters on Monday that he was happy to be back in England, that football in this country was beautiful, and that it had been a mistake for him ever to go back to Serie A. But in Italy, the press had a different take. They recalled how the player had returned enthusiastically to his home country just 19 months earlier, bemoaning Manchesters weather and cuisine.

Roy Hodgson admits concerns over Luke Shaw fitness
Jonathan Wilson: Why is Van Gaal intent on 3-5-2?

Louis van Gaal has challenged Roy Hodgsons assessment that Luke Shaw has questionable fitness. The Manchester United manager described the left-back as an example to the dressing room owing to his determination to follow the clubs fitness regime.

Van Gaal had described the 19-year-old as unfit during Uniteds tour of the United States yet after Hodgson, the England manager, agreed he moved to clarify his position.

Brendan Rodgers reaches Liverpool century with Real promise at Anfield

Win at Tottenham would move him alongside Shankly, Benítez
Manager picks first game v FC Gomel as favourite of first 100

You never forget the first time, which explains why Brendan Rodgers cites a Europa League third-round qualifier against FC Gomel of Belarus as his stand-out game as Liverpool manager.

The 100th match of his Anfield tenure arrives at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with Liverpool safely back in the Champions League and paired against Real Madrid. There can be no better illustration of the rapid rise under Rodgers than those two European staging posts.

Chelsea the fare for next beneficiaries of Steven Naismiths largesse

Everton forward happy with impact of seasonticket scheme
Scot the form man as Lukaku and Etoo prepare for former club

Four unemployed people will attend Chelseas visit to Goodison Park on Saturday courtesy of four season tickets that the Everton forward Steven Naismith bought and donated to Jobcentre Plus. The act drew widespread acclaim for a player now lauded by the Gwladys Street for his tireless influence on the team. We are losing the spine of what football is all about is how the Scotland international eloquently, alarmingly puts it.

Naismith is evidence that Premier League players are not impervious to the call for a reduction in the ticket prices from which they benefit. He insists he is far from alone and his message is timely. Spirit of Shankly and The Blue Union, Liverpool and Everton supporters groups, issued a joint statement this week entitled The Greed of Modern Football after their requests for a reciprocal ticket price reduction for the Anfield and Goodison derbies were rejected by the citys two clubs.

New man at helm wants to return favour

Neil Warnock returns to St James Park as the manager of Crystal Palace on Saturday with contrasting feelings. The thrill of being back in the Premier League will be mixed with regret at a visit that hastened the end of his previous spell.

The last time Warnock brought a team to Newcastle United, in January 2010, he did so under the cloud of administration Palace being informed of their fate as their plane landed at the airport.

Liverpools Brendan Rodgers to unleash Mario Balotelli at Tottenham

Posted: 29 Aug 2014 02:29 PM PDT

Balotelli has impressed Rodgers in training
Liverpool lacked penetration in defeat by Manchester City
Balotellis task is to bring menace back to Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers has no reservations over handing Mario Balotelli an immediate debut at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, insisting the £16m striker will not become a distraction at Liverpool. This wont be the Mario Balotelli show every week, the Liverpool manager said, twice, at his first pre-match press conference since signing the Italy international.

The 24-year-old has impressed in training since joining Liverpool on Monday and, having had a pre-season with Milan, he is likely to be given a start by Rodgers at White Hart Lane with the team lacking penetration in the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City. He has looked great and, if I need to put him in, I will, said Rodgers. I wont have any fears about that.

Sunderland manager backs midfielder to follow Jack Colback
Ginger Pirlo can star for England

Gus Poyet believes Lee Cattermole can emulate his former Sunderland team-mate Jack Colback and earn a place in the England squad.

Cattermole has improved radically under Poyets management at the Stadium of Light and, although they are very different midfielders, many north-east football watchers are surprised that Newcastle Uniteds Colback received a call up ahead of Sunderlands enforcer.

Why is Louis van Gaal so hell-bent on using 3-5-2 at Manchester United?

Purchase of Ángel di María suggests Old Trafford manager is going to stick with the formation at United
United players need time, says Van Gaal

The question, often, is not the what or the how but the why. On Sunday, after Manchester United had staggered to a 1-1 draw against Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers had been hammered 4-0 by Tottenham, there was much carping about 3-5-2, the formation United had used in taking one point from their first two Premier League games of the season, and QPR in losing both their opening matches.

That Hull City had played 3-5-2 in beating QPR and that Steve Bruces side reached the FA Cup final last season playing with this formation tended to be overlooked amid the carping. It is rarely the system to blame, but the personnel and their application of it.

Harry Redknapp has confirmed he has been offered a two-year contract extension at QPR and said he would keep the club in the Premier League this season. Following defeats in their opening two league games, reports began circling earlier in the week that the QPR chairman, Tony Fernandes, was ready to make an early change of manager.

Tim Sherwood had been linked with the Loftus Road job after his former employers Tottenham beat QPR in a clinical 4-0 victory on Sunday but Redknapp, who brought the club back up through the play-offs, revealed he was ready to commit his future to the club.

Mauricio Pochettino plays down Balotelli and Spurs Liverpool past

Italians arrival is important for Liverpool but not for us
Tottenham signing Fabrizio Fazio unlikely to feature

Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham Hotspur must not let the circus surrounding Mario Balotelli distract them when the Italian makes his debut for Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Sunday .

Balotelli is expected to start alongside Daniel Sturridge in Liverpools attack after his £16m arrival from Milan this week and the focus on him will be intense. Yet Pochettino was not willing to discuss the former Manchester City strikers return to England in great depth, saying that it was of no significance to Tottenham.

Fernando Torres is to have a medical at Milan on Saturday after agreement was reached between the Italian club, Chelsea and the players representatives to smooth what is, in effect, a free transfer.

The Spain striker, who cost a British record £50m when he signed from Liverpool in January 2011, will leave England after seven seasons in the Premier League and sign a two-year deal at San Siro after agreeing a compromise over his wage demands. He was initially reluctant to lower his £175,000-a-week salary.

Felix Magath sticks to his guns after critics take aim at Fulham record

Posted: 29 Aug 2014 11:21 AM PDT

Manager blames everyone but himself for the clubs poor form and continues his war of words with Mohamed Al Fayed during a confusing briefing before the visit of Cardiff City
Al Fayed hits back at Magaths absurd claims

Felix Magath may have lost the first four league games of the Championship season but he clearly believes that little or none of the blame for Fulhams predicament should be laid at his door. They lie bottom of the table following relegation after 13 consecutive seasons in the Premier League. On Saturday they play Cardiff City, who are eighth in the Championship and have, seemingly, coped better with life outside the top flight.

In recent times, Magath has come under attack from the former players John Arne Riise and Brede Hangeland, who were scathing in their criticism of his apparently brutal training methods. I really like Fulham, Riise said. Its a real family club with a great stadium, but with Magath everything gets flushed down the toilet.
