Argentinian scores twice to help Barça beat Elche 3-0
Catalans win, despite Javier Mascheranos red card

Goals from Lionel Messi and the teenager Munir El Haddadi ensured Luis Enrique got his era as Barcelona coach off to a winning start as they beat Elche 3-0.

The Catalans had to play the entire second half with 10 men after Javier Mascherano was sent off but they had earlier taken the lead through Messi, who also grabbed the third, with the exciting Munir, 18, scoring just after half-time.

Newcastle look for reinforcements after firing blanks at Aston Villa

Posted: 24 Aug 2014 02:00 PM PDT

There was not a moments hesitation from Alan Pardew when he was asked whether he would happily take another striker before the end of the transfer window, and it was easy to see why after his team fired blanks for a second successive game. I would accept any player coming into my group, the Newcastle manager said.

More than half of Newcastles Premier League goals last season were scored by Loïc Rémy and Yohan Cabaye, neither of whom are still at the club. The big question is whether Pardew has the players at his disposal to bridge that significant shortfall or if the new recruits need a helping hand. These are early days 180 minutes of football is too early to cast judgment but Pardew needed no telling that Newcastle must cut loose when they host struggling Crystal Palace on Saturday or the doubts will grow.

New Chelsea too much for Leicester but José Mourinho still fine-tuning

Posted: 24 Aug 2014 02:00 PM PDT

It says a great deal about the enduring mystique of José Mourinho in England that after two Premier League victories, the latest this slow-burn but ultimately comfortable defeat of Leicester City, at least one national radio show was talking up the possibility that Chelsea could end up not just winning the title but remaining top of the table from start to finish.

On the face of it there are only two problems with this. First, every other team in the Premier League, most notably Manchester City, who look an ominously well-seasoned champion squad. And secondly Chelsea themselves, and the variables of what is, for all the calibre of their recruits, a relatively new group of players.

Jack Rodwells Sunderland equaliser spoils Manchester Uniteds day

Posted: 24 Aug 2014 10:19 AM PDT

The crest on the shirt is the same. The songs go to the same tune and in the closing moments, hunting a late winner, there was at least a flickered reminder of the old team. Yet this is not Manchester United as we know them. Not yet, anyway. Louis van Gaal had predicted it would take three months, or maybe even longer, before everything clicked and there were only fleeting moments here when they looked close to getting it right.

They were fortunate in one respect, that Sunderland did not have more refinement in their own play. The home side were strangely lacking in ambition and really ought to have done more to examine Uniteds shortcomings after Jack Rodwells first goal for the club had put them level with an hour to play. The overwhelming sense was that this was a good time to face Van Gaals side.

Harry Redknapp booed by QPR supporters after waving to Tottenham fans

Posted: 24 Aug 2014 09:46 AM PDT

QPR played like a team of strangers at Tottenham
Three-man defensive system will not be scrapped
Match report: Tottenham 4-0 QPR

Harry Redknapp has dismissed suggestions he risked alienating Queens Park Rangers chastened support by waving in response to home fans in the Park Lane end towards the end of his first return to Tottenham Hotspur.

QPR trailed by four goals when the chorus went up among the Spurs supporters behind Hugo Lloris goal for their former manager to acknowledge them. When Redknapp waved, the travelling fans in the corner of the ground broke out in to boos. But Im sitting there watching the game, and I hear them asking me to give them a wave, he said in defence. I dont know which punters are sitting up where, do I? Whether thats the home fans or the away fans. Whats the big deal anyway, if I give them a wave?

Bruce looking to sign two or three new players
Match report: Hull City 1-1 Stoke City

Hull manager Steve Bruce has agreed a deal in principle to sign Tottenham defender Michael Dawson but admits a move for Jordan Rhodes is proving problematic.

Speaking after his sides 1-1 draw with Stoke, Bruce confirmed his summer-long pursuit of 30-year-old Dawson was close to bearing fruit and hopes to push the transfer through quickly. But having seen Blackburn reject two bids for striker Rhodes, there is plenty of work still to do if he is to replace Shane Long up front.
