Arsène Wenger readies Arsenal for win at all costs clash with Besiktas

Posted: 17 Aug 2014 02:30 PM PDT

Arsenals players were still glowing in the aftermath of Aaron Ramseys stoppage-time winner, a prod from a few yards out that maintains this teams momentum, as they departed the Emirates on Saturday, although Arsène Wenger had already moved on. His squad touch down in Istanbul on Monday for what has become their annual awkward Champions League qualifier. We are desperate to go through, no matter what it costs, said the manager. Besiktas will feel much the same way.

A year ago they breezed beyond Fenerbahce, of Istanbul, at this stage. This time around, back in the same city, they face Slaven Bilics side, a team supplemented by the £6m arrival from Chelsea of Demba Ba, a player Arsenal coveted last August. The Senegalese has already scored a hat-trick for his new club, to knock out Feyenoord in the previous qualifying round. In that context, Wenger will be pained to be travelling light in defence, with Kieran Gibbs absent due to a hamstring injury and doubts surrounding Laurent Koscielnys involvement.

José Mourinho wants Chelsea to don the garb of title contenders at Burnley

Posted: 17 Aug 2014 02:29 PM PDT

Chelsea manager, armed with major new signings, knows that his side must rebuff a raucous reception at Turf Moor

On Monday night Chelsea must dress appropriately. Last season José Mourinho complained that some of his players did not sufficiently grasp the differing demands of the Premier League they had, said the Portuguese in a memorable metaphor, a tendency to wear jeans to weddings and smoking jackets for a stroll in the park. Turf Moor this evening will be no place for sports casual.

Mourinho is confident that the changes that his club have made this summer mean his team will not look as ill-suited for purpose as they did on some such occasions last term. But Burnley will be hellbent on putting a dent in that confidence.

Luis Enrique is keen to give Uruguayan some minutes playing
Suárez will be presented to fans before Mondays game

The Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, has confirmed Luis Suárez will make his debut in Monday nights friendly against the Mexican side León.

The Uruguay forward had been forced to train away from his new team-mates after completing a £75m move to the Catalan club in July, due to the four-month ban incurred for biting the Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

Luis Suárez texts best wishes as Liverpool send a signal of their own

Posted: 17 Aug 2014 02:20 PM PDT

The Uruguayan, now with Barcelona, sent Brendan Rodgers an SMS before they beat Southampton

Brendan Rodgers received a good luck text from Luis Suárez before Liverpools Premier League opener against Southampton and claimed the win could set the tone for another title challenge without the brilliant Uruguay international.

The Liverpool manager described the 2-1 win as vital after goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge compensated for a laboured display against a Southampton side showing few ill effects from the summer of upheaval at St Marys Stadium. Sturridges goal was his 36th in 50 appearances for Liverpool, a more prolific return than any player in the clubs illustrious history since George Allan in the late 19th century, and the England international believes last seasons runners-up will be stronger despite his former strike partners £75m move to Barcelona.

Eddie Howe and Bournemouth remain on right track after Brentford battle

Posted: 17 Aug 2014 02:10 PM PDT

The Cherries had to work hard to win against a side that sees them as an example for clubs promoted from League One

Eddie Howe summed up Bournemouths 1-0 victory over Brentford at Dean Court in one word: ugly. But, as he added of his clubs top spot in the Championship after two wins out of two: It is the start we would have wanted to make.

Ugliness does not befit Bournemouth. John Betjeman said it was one of the few English towns one can safely call her. It no more befits Howe, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and, at 36, taking the club to new heights. Last years second-tier 10th beat by two their best previous finish. What he meant was that Brentford, newly promoted, made them fight like hell.

Tim Sherwood high on Crystal Palaces list to replace Tony Pulis as manager

Former Spurs manager impressed Steve Parish at interview
Premier League experience a requirement for new recruit

Tim Sherwood has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Tony Pulis at Crystal Palace after the former Tottenham Hotspur manager made a favourable impression at interview. The club are seeking to make an appointment early this week to give the new man time to add to his squad in what remains of the transfer window.

The Palace co-chairman Steve Parish conducted a round of interviews on Sunday 24 hours after watching his side lose 2-1 at Arsenal in their opening Premier League fixture of the season. The former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay, who worked closely with the Palace sporting director Iain Moody while at the Welsh club, is also understood to have held talks as he looks for a return to management, with Chris Hughton, Steve Clarke and Roberto Di Matteo having come under consideration. There has been no contact with Neil Lennon, who left Celtic in the summer.

Manchester City cruise past Newcastle United for opening win

Posted: 17 Aug 2014 10:17 AM PDT

Perhaps the most worrying part for the teams hoping to outdo Manchester City is that the champions have continued from where they left off last season, while also leaving the clear impression there is better to come. Manuel Pellegrinis team are still trying to restore some order from the summer, with players returning at different times, Sergio Agüero short of fitness and Gaël Clichy temporarily standing in as a makeshift right-back. And yet they still managed to win without a single shot to trouble Joe Hart in goal.

It was their 11th straight victory against Newcastle and a reminder of their collective strength even on a day when there were only fleeting glimpses of the attacking qualities that made them such prolific scorers last season. Not everything has clicked straight away but there was still plenty to admire about their structure and knowhow, withstanding some concerted pressure from the home side and then picking them off with their extra quality.

Daniel Sturridge strikes to give Liverpool lift-off against Southampton

The best images from Anfield

The winning goal brought Brendan Rodgers bounding on to the pitch for the first time since Liverpools victory over Manchester City during last seasons title run-in. Relief, not delirium, sparked the Liverpool managers invasion on this occasion but the over-exuberance was understandable. Here was a reminder of how that title challenge began.

For Southampton at Anfield in August 2014 read Stoke City at Anfield in August 2013. Twelve months ago Liverpool laboured to three points against a team under new management courtesy of a Daniel Sturridge goal and an 89th-minute penalty save from Simon Mignolet. The script remained the same for Ronald Koemans first day as a Premier League manager.
