United emerged 5-3 winners on penalties in Tuesdays International Champions Cup clash against Inter, after both teams failed to find the net in 90 minutes of regulation time in Washington DC. The Premier League outfit had routed the Los Angeles Galaxy 7-0 and accounted for Roma 3-2 prior to their third match in the USA but Van Gaal said the performance at FedEx Field was their best under his tutelage. I am very pleased, the Dutchman told reporters afterwards. I think we played by far the best match of our sequence of three. They only had one shot on our goal and that was given by the referee [a free-kick], but I think we also created six or seven chances, so then it is seven against one. I was very pleased with our ball possession; it was much better than the other matches. And I think also the positions were better covered. So I was tonight very pleased with the performance of my players, both in the first half and the second half. Captain Darren Fletcher converted the match-winning penalty in the shoot-out after Marco Andreolli fired his effort off the crossbar. Van Gaal said his squad had prepared for the likelihood of penalties following Inters success in a shoot-out against Real on Saturday. We practised penalties yesterday and also the sequence, he said. That is why De Gea was our goalkeeper in the second half, because he is the best of the four at penalties. Fletcher hit the post in training soits alsoa little bit of luck, but we deserved the victory. The former Netherlands coach also heaped praise on Uniteds defence, with a back three consisting of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling keeping their second clean sheet in three games on tour. The first match was zero goals, the second match was a fantastic goal by Pjanic, an error from the goalkeeper and a penaltygiven by the referee, and today again zero goals, he added. Van Gaal also admitted he was searching for defensive reinforcements following the departures of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, with Thomas Vermaelen and Mats Hummels linked. We are doing well but we are looking for defenders, because a lot of defenders have gone, he said. We have to replace them but I like also like Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett.

Simeone talks up Hernandez transfer

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 07:43 PM PDT

Hernandez is down the pecking order behind strikers Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck at Manchester United and is tipped to leave Old Trafford after starting just six Premier League games last season. Serie A outfit Inter and Spanish champions Atletico have been linked with the Mexico International in recent weeks. Despite signing Mario Mandzukic from Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich as a replacement for Diego Costa, Atletico have only one recognised striker in their squad, with new recruit Antoine Griezmann a winger by trade. Speaking to reporters ahead of Atleticos pre-season fixture against America on Wednesday, Simeone said anything is possible before the transfer window closes. We speak to the sporting directors, we gave them the ideas on the type of players we want and then they get the players, said Simeone. WithJavier Hernandez and plenty of other great players, anything is possible. We cant close the door to anyone until the transfer window closes. He is averticalplayer, great in one on one situations, hes a great option for any team. Atletico will go head-to-head with city rivals Real Madrid across two legs in the Supercopa de Espana next month, before opening their La Liga title defence against Rayo Vallecano on August 24.

United edge Inter on penalties

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 06:42 PM PDT

After the teams could not be separated in regulation time - with the score locked at 0-0 - penalties determined the winner and it was United who prevailed at FedEx Field. Captain Darren Fletcher stepped up and converted the winning penalty after Marco Andreollis effort cannoned off the crossbar. The result preserved Uniteds perfect record in the United States, with three wins from three. Manager Louis van Gaal made four changes to the starting XI that took to the field in the 3-2 victory over Roma on Saturday, with Anders Lindegaard, Chris Smalling, Fletcher and Ashley Young returning to the line-up for their reunion with former United captain Nemanja Vidic. Inter made just one change to the team that beat Real Madrid on penalties in California on Saturday, with Joel Obi dropping out for Rene Krhin. A number of United youngsters were given game time in Denver but the return of senior personnel was clearly a boost and it showed with the Premier League outfit coming close to breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute. United defender Phil Jones stooped low to direct his header towards the bottom corner of the net but Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic got his hand to the ball and denied Jonny Evans on the rebound in a goal-mouth scramble. There were few clear-cut chances throughout the first half, though some neat interchange play between Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata almost resulted in the opening goal, but the Inter defence were up to the task. Wilfred Zaha was the only player in Uniteds travelling squad not to have played a minute prior to Tuesdays clash but he was given timein the second half and came close to netting the opener within minutes of his introduction after a driving run from halfway. Inter almost won it at the death after being awarded a free-kick, however David de Gea deniedFredy Guarin from 25 yards out as the match headed to penalties. United would not be denied a third successive victory in the USA, albeit after a shoot-out, and will now turn their attention to Saturdays clash with Real Madrid. Inter are back in action against Serie A rivals Roma on the same day.

Reus focused on recovery despite transfer talk

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 06:24 AM PDT

Reus is working his way back to full strength after missing Germany's successful World Cup campaign due to atear inthe anterior ligament above his left ankle, sufferedin a friendly against Armenia in June. The 25-year-old is under contract at Dortmund until 2017, but is reported to have stalled over negotiations on a new deal - witha rumoured €35 million release clause in his contract that becomes active at the end of next season. A number of teams have been linked with a move for the former Borussia Monchengladbach man, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Liverpool. And, while Reus' representative Dirk Hebel confirmed that several teams are keen on his client, he stressed that the Dortmund number 11 is not being distracted by their interest. "Marco would make any big European team stronger," Hebel told Bild. "That's why it's completely normal that a number of these major European teams are interested in signing him. "But his main priority for now is to get back to top fitness and return to the pitch. Everything else is not important at this stage."

Vidic adapting to different style at Inter

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 03:50 AM PDT

The Serbia international moved toSerie A on a free transfer at the end of the seasonfollowing the expiryof his contract at Old Trafford. Inter - currently taking part in the pre-season International Champions Cup in the United States -head into the new campaignlooking to improve upon their fifth-placed finish last term, and the 32-year-old defender concedes he is stillbecoming accustomed to his new surroundings. From the atmosphere with my team-mates to the methods of work, from the language to the cooking, everything is new for me, he toldGazzetta dello Sport. Theres greater attention to detail, to the tactics. Perhaps over there [in England] there was more intensity, moreexercises on speed. But you work hard anyway. Maybe later playing in a three-man defence will be easier, but I have to adapt and it takes a bit of time. [At] the weekend against Real Madrid [in the International Champions Cup]we did pretty well. Beside their goal, they did not have many chances. With some questioning whether he is past his peak, Vidic believes that all he can do is train to the best of his ability and impress his new coach, Walter Mazzarri. Are my best years behind me? This can only be known in the field, he added. I am trying to prepare myself to the maximum, then we will judge. Am I able to play two games a week? Mazzarri will decide. Vidic also brushed asidesuggestions that he would have remained at United had he known Louis van Gaal was in line to take over from David Moyes. He also revealed that he had turned to former Serbia captain and Inter stalwartDejan Stankovic to help him decide over his possible move to Milan. It is useless to look to the past, he said.I decided in one day and I am sure that I made the right choice. Did I lean on Dejan Stankovic for advice? Much. Deki has been at Inter since I had been at Manchester United and had only good memories. Now that I am here I can say that he was right.

Shaw is not fit enough, says boss Van Gaal

Posted: 28 Jul 2014 11:41 PM PDT

TeenagerShaw, who represented England at the recent FIFA World Cup in Brazil, completed a high-profile move to Unitedfrom Southamptonlast month. However, it would appear he has work to do if he is to earn a place in Van Gaal's line-up for the Premier League opener against Swansea City at Old Trafford on August 16. Shaw trained separately from his team-mates at Washington's FedEx Field, ahead of United's International Champions Cup fixture against Inter, before sitting out parts of Monday'ssession. Asked to explain why, Van Gaal said: "He is OK, but I am always a trainer-coach who sees individuals and what they need. He needs to be fit and is not very fit orfit enough to do what I want. He needs to train individually until he is fit." United's Dutch manager went on to concede he is unsure how long it will take for Shaw to reach a level of fitness he finds acceptable. "I cannot judge how long that will take, but I see what I see," added Van Gaal. "I have spoken with him and we have made a programme for him. He agreed with me. "How long [until he is fully fit]? That we have to see, but that I don't know. "I have heard good messages from Strud [United fitness coach Tony Strudwick], but we have to see." Van Gaal also explained the reasoning behind Rafael, who has a groin problem, returning to Manchester for treatment. "You can leave the player in America and treat him here, or choose to have the best treatment and we think it is much better at the Aon Complex [United's training ground]," said Van Gaal. "He can work out his jetlag much quicker if he goes home. There are two arguments for it and he agreed with me that he should go back. "He is already back, but we will wait and see how long he takes."
