United clinch £70m-a-year deal

New 2014-15 Kit LaunchAdidas will replace Nike as Manchester United’s kit manufacturer from the start of the 2015-16 season, after United clinched a deal with the German company worth a staggering £70m-a-year, more than double the amount United currently pocket from Nike.

The deal, which should be officially announced on Monday afternoon, will bring an end to United’s 13-year long partnership with Nike, much to relief of a lot of fans who have grown increasingly disillusioned with the American manufacturer’s inability to produce a good looking kit for the Reds.

Having replaced Umbro as technical sponsor at the start of the 2002-03 season, Nike refused to meet United’s financial demands after the Reds failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and last week issued a statement explaining their decision to pull out of negotiations.

“Any partnership with a club or federation has to be mutually beneficial and the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike's shareholders.

“We are proud to have partnered with them for the last 12 years and will continue to sponsor the club until the end of the season.

“Manchester United is a great club with passionate fans. We are proud to have partnered with them for the last 12 years and will continue to sponsor the club until the end of the 2014/15 season.

“Any partnership with a club or federation has to be mutually beneficial and the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike's shareholders. We look forward to a successful final season with the club.”

Adidas, who currently sponsor Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich among others, produced some of United’s best ever kits during the 1980 and 1992.
