Netherlands sweat on Van Persie and Janmaat Posted: 08 Jul 2014 11:17 AM PDT Louis van Gaal's men face Argentina in Sao Paulo on Wednesday and the coach confirmed that captain Van Persie and defender Janmaat could be absent due to stomach problems. Feyenoord defender Janmaat has not featured since the group stages of the competition, but Manchester United striker Van Persie missing out as Netherlands aim to reach back-to-back World Cup finals would come as a severe blow. "Van Persie and Janmaat have not participated in training because of gastrointestinal complaints,"Van Gaal told a press conference. "We do not want to take any chances." On the prospect of Van Persie being at full fitness to face Argentina, Van Gaal added: "I don't know. Tomorrow I will have to take these decisions. We have more than a day to go and Van Persie is a very important player to us." There was better news for Van Gaal after Nigel de Jong took partin training on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Milan midfielder injured a groin muscle duringNetherlands' last-16 win over Mexico and the initial prognosis suggested he would be sidelined for two to four weeks. "We had Nigel training today,"said Van Gaal. "We now have to wait for the response." Experienced defender Ron Vlaar and midfielder Leroy Fer also trained despite concerns over respective knee and thigh complaints. Both could nowplay a part in a match that Van Gaal believes is too close to call. "I think there is no favourite. It is a 50-50 match," he added. Nike to bring end to Man United sponsorship Posted: 08 Jul 2014 11:05 AM PDT The sportswear gianthasbeen kit sponsors of the Premier Leagueclub for the last 12 years - taking over from former suppliers Umbro - with the upcoming campaign scheduled to be the last of their agreement. Reports had suggested Nike and United had failed to reach an agreement over an extension, and the US companyconfirmedon Tuesday they did not feel the terms demanded by the clubwere acceptable. "Manchester United is a great club with passionate fans," Nike said in a statement released to Perform. "We are proud to have partnered with them for the last 12 years and will continue to sponsor the club until the end of the 2014-15 season. "Any partnership with a club or federation has to be mutually beneficial and the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike's shareholders. "We look forward to a successful final season with the club." United unveiled their kit for the 2014-15 campaign on Monday, complete with new shirt sponsor Chevrolet. Cocu: In-demand Depay should stay at PSV Posted: 08 Jul 2014 08:23 AM PDT The 20-year-old has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Real Madrid after catching the eye with Netherlandsduring the FIFA World Cup. Depay has scored twice in four appearances, three of which were as a substitute, in his first World Cup and will be hoping to get the chance to add to that tally in Wednesday's semi-final against Argentina. PSV coach Cocu has revealed that the Eredivisie club have not received any bids for the talented youngster and the former Netherlands midfielder believes it would benefit his development to stay at the Philips Stadion. He toldVoetbal International: "No one has contacted us and he has a contract [until 2017]here so we should not get ahead of ourselves. "Ilet Memphis know that it would good for him to have another year here. "He has only one full season behind him. I think you need a certain foundation before making the next step. "That is independent of the qualities that a person has. Therefore, he must stay at PSV at least one more year. "There is no concrete interest so I'm assuming he will report for pre-season training later." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Valverde challenges Bilbao after Herrera exit Posted: 08 Jul 2014 05:34 AM PDT Herrera completed a switch to Manchester United on a four-deal last month, after the Premier League club met his buy-out clause. The 24-year-old was an influential member of a Bilbao side that qualified for the UEFA Champions League via a fourth-placed finish in La Liga, making 33league appearances and scoring five goals. We wish him the best of luck. "I wasn't expecting the sale of Ander. [These] are issues that can happen." Valverde also accepts that there is pressure on his side to replicate the form that saw them secure European football when thenew campaign begins. "FInishing fourth generates high expectations," he added. "We accept it, but it will be a complicated season. "It is a challenge for us. Fletcher relishing testing pre-season schedule Posted: 08 Jul 2014 03:18 AM PDT United are due to visit the US later this month, with a minimum of four games against strong opposition. Following a clash with LA Galaxy, United take part in the International Champions Cup and will come upagainst Roma, Inter and Real Madrid. Should they reach the final, United will take on Manchester City, Liverpool, Milan or Olympiacos, and Fletcher is looking forward to a tough build-up ahead of the 2014-15 season. "You want to challenge yourself against the bestand, although it's pre-season, if you're playing against someone like Real Madrid you are going to be against top-quality opposition," he told the club's official website. "It's like in training here, when we play in two teams [in training] it becomes quite competitive and you'll see the same in these tour matches. "Once you get on that pitch it's competitive and you always want to win every game and every tournament you're involved in. "I'm sure the sports science lads will be saying that it's all about minutes and not getting injured but sometimes these games can get feisty. "It's what you want as you want to make an impression and impress the fans and the managerbecauseyou want to be in the team for the start of the season." No Arsenal commitment from Vermaelen Posted: 07 Jul 2014 09:05 PM PDT Vermaelen has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and the 28-year-old defender added fuel to the fire of those rumours on Monday. Having left Brazil after Belgium's FIFA World Cup campaign ended at the quarter-finals stage, Vermaelen refused to commit his future to Arsenal, where he has spent the past five seasons, although he confirmed he plans to discuss a possible new deal with the Premier League club. "I really do not know where I will play, Arsenal or elsewhere next season," he told the London Evening Standard. "All my attention went to the World Cup. I will see when I talk with Arsenal." Vermaelen has a year left on his contract with Arsenal but played just 14 league matches last season, as he fell behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as one of Arsene Wenger's preferred central defenders. Ferguson pays tribute to legendary Di Stefano Posted: 07 Jul 2014 07:43 PM PDT Di Stefano, 88, had been under supervision at Madrid'sGregorio Maranon Hospital after suffering a heart attack on Saturday but the dual Ballon d'Or winner died two days later. Tributes have been flowing in for the Argentine-born forward, who scored 308 goals in 396 appearances for Real and won 16 trophies with the Madrid outfit, and Ferguson is the latest football identity to have paid their respects. "The great question which always comes up is 'who are the greatest players?'" Ferguson told Sky Sports News. "There is a phalanx of great ones – (Johan) Cruyff, (Diego) Maradona, Pele, (Ferenc) Puskas and Di Stefano. Di Stefano was one of the greatest in my mind. "He had fantastic balance and poise – if you look at one of the goals he scored against Eintracht Frankfurt it was completely what we were talking about – the balance he had. Unbelievable, he was." Di Stefano - winner of five consecutive European cups with Real between 1956 and 1960 - went on to coach the iconic club in two separate spells. In his first stint, Di Stefano came up against Ferguson's Aberdeen in the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup final, which was won by the Scottish club 2-1 after extra time in Sweden - a meeting the former United boss remembers clearly. "It was an honour to come up against Di Stefano," he said. "What I did, out of respect for him, was I bought a bottle of Scottish Malt whisky and gave it to him the night before the match when the two teams had an opportunity to train on the pitch at the venue for the final. "We were second, they were first. When he came off, they were coming down the tunnel and I said 'Mr Di Stefano, I'd like to give you this gift.' He was taken aback, he was really taken aback. Ferguson added: "He said, 'Aberdeen are a team that money can't buy. They have a soul, and a family spirit'. Those words – you couldn't say any more, in terms of praise for a football team. It was very generous of him. "He was always the focus of Real Madrid wherever they went. He had a fantastic life and I'm proud to have been associated with him in a small way." Matthaus confident Kroos can shine at Real Madrid Posted: 07 Jul 2014 03:18 AM PDT Kroos' future has been the subject of speculation for months, with Manchester United having been frequentlylinked with a move for the Bayern Munich midfielder. Spanish giants Real are reported to have stolen a march on the Premier League club, though, and Kroos is said to be set to move to the Santiago Bernabeu when Germany's FIFA World Cup campaign finishes. Former Germany captainMatthaus believes the 24-year-old willadd a new dimension to Carlo Ancelotti's side if he completes his move to the La Liga club. He told Marca: "Congratulations to Real Madrid, they've got themselves a genius there. All the same, I'd have preferred him to stay at Munich. "Toni is very intelligent, he passes the ball brilliantly and he can shoot hard and well, too. (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Gareth) Bale can really expand alongside him. (Arjen) Robben and (Franck) Ribery have, in the past few years. "He isn't a central midfielder, he's more of a false (number) nine who should go through the middle, behind the forwards. "I can imagine Cristiano Ronaldo, Kroos and Bale together in that line of three behind (Karim) Benzema. He is like (Luka) Modric in that way, though Modric can play as a central midfielder and Kroos is not one of those." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
