Germany beat Argentina to win World Cup final with late Mario Götze goal Posted: 13 Jul 2014 02:58 PM PDT When the goal finally arrived, 112 minutes into a long, wearing night of tension, there were members of the German entourage who seemed intent on re-enacting the infamous end to the Ryder Cup at Brookline. Their victory run, en masse, took them all the way from the dugout to the opposite side of the pitch where André Schürrle had created the games decisive moment. Mario Götze, another of Germanys substitutes, had taken down Schürrles cross on his chest with his first touch. His second was to arrow a left-volley into the net and ensure that Germany will always remember Rio de Janeiro with the same fondness as Bern in 1954, Munich in 1974 and Rome in 1990. Who needs Barcelona when youve got Bavaria? In boardrooms around the globe, football club owners will be instructing their chief executives to get me a German. Across assorted time-zones it is no longer enough for a goalkeeper to have safe hands. Thanks to Manuel Neuer the era of sweeper keepers, boasting strong lines in fancy footwork, is upon us. Brazil proves perfect host to inspire soul-stirring World Cup feast Posted: 13 Jul 2014 06:03 AM PDT Tournament brought home footballs ability to unite and Brazil delivered on its promises, but only time will tell if $13.5bn of public funds was money well spent As the sound of helicopters and the tang of teargas filled the air on the first day of a World Cup that had proved more divisive among its own people than any other, initial signs in Brazil were not promising. Inside the security cordon at the barely finished Arena Corinthians, President Dilma Rousseff had promised a Copa das Copas the Cup of Cups. She left with obscene chants ringing in her ears as the national team needed the help of the referee to deliver an unconvincing victory. But four weeks on, it is hard to argue Brazil has not delivered, even if Luiz Felipe Scolaris emotional side ultimately came off the rails in spectacular fashion. Continue reading...![]() |

Whisper it softly: it's OK to like Germany Posted: 13 Jul 2014 04:40 AM PDT Many Britons will be cheering for Germany in the World Cup final because we admire their football. But there is much more we can learn from them too Something strange is stirring in Britain this weekend. It's the sound of Brits being nice about Germany. In tonight's World Cup final in Rio, Germany face Argentina at the end of the most memorable tournament in my lifetime. And it seems pretty clear that, for many of us, Germany is the team we will be cheering. A cynic might say this is just because dislike for Argentina exceeds that for Germany. But that's not what is going on. Germany's football in Brazil (and especially against Brazil) has been exceptional. Wanting Germany to win is based on wanting the best team in the tournament to win. Dip into the weekend papers, the blogosphere & the musings of the twitterati, and you'll see multiple variants on a similar sentiment: "I can't quite believe it, and I never thought this would happen, but I find myself supporting Germany. Fancy that!" Continue reading...![]() |
