Vidal to decide on his future after holiday Posted: 18 Jul 2014 07:17 AM PDT Vidal has been a pivotal player for the Italian championsin recent seasons, scoring 40 goals in three campaigns, all of which have ended with the Turin club winning the Serie A title. However, the Chile international has been consistently linked with a move away from the club in recent times, with UEFA Champions League holders Real thought to be keen on luring him to the Santiago Bernabeu. United, now led by former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal, are also rumoured as potential suitors of the 27-year-old. The doubt over his future at Juve has increased followingthe departure of Antonio Conte, who left the club on Tuesday and was replaced by MassimilianoAllegrithe following day. Juve chief executive Giuseppe Marotta insisted Vidal was not for sale atAllegri's introductory press conference on Wednesday. But Vidal has done little to quell rumoursof his potential exit by staying coy on talk of a potential switch to Spain or England. "It's difficult to speak of other teams when you are already at a top club," Vidal is quoted as saying by Chilean newspaper La Cuarta. "I have won the Serie A title three times and I respect my team-mates. "I have heard about the interest shown by Real Madrid and Manchester United in me but it is my agent who deals with this. "Have I completed a cycle [at Juve]? I don't feel that way.Perhaps I will remain atJuventusall my life. "Once I arrive to Italy I will speak to the coach and see what happens. "Now the only thing on my mind on is that I have seven or eight days of holiday left and I want to go away from Chile in order to have a good rest." United captaincy up for grabs, says Van Gaal Posted: 17 Jul 2014 05:02 PM PDT The captain's armband for the 2014-15 campaign is up for grabs after former skipper Nemanja Vidic joined Serie A side Inter on a free transfer at the end of last season. Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney are the reported frontrunners to lead United, and the Dutchman is favourite to get the nod having captained Van Gaal's Netherlands team at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. However, speaking at his official unveiling on Thursday, Van Gaal said "all the players were possible candidates". "I have to know them and therefore I use four, five, six weeks, dependable if I'm out already after four weeks but it could be two months," Van Gaal told reporters at United's training base. "For me the captain's role is very important and therefore I need time and sometimes I didn't have the time, then I have to make quick decisions but quick decisions are not always good. "So I use my time for it because I think the captain of a team for me is very important." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Van Gaal dismisses personality assumptions Posted: 17 Jul 2014 10:33 AM PDT The Dutchman, fresh from leading Netherlands to the last four at the World Cup,was presented to the media on Thursday at the beginning of his Old Trafford reign. Having won silverware with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Ajax and AZ, Van Gaal is expected to bring success back to United. While Van Gaal acknowledged having a "strong personality", he dismissed the prevailing notioninsections of the media that he was dictatorialin his style. "I'm a democratic, empathetichuman being and of course I have a strong personaility [but] the other characteristics are more important," he added. "That's the key for my personality." On the suggestion of being autocratic, he added: "[It is]unfair, because the media want to show that part of my personality. That is a small part. When you repeat that, everyone thinks like that. "I'm always the same person. From 39, when I was head coach of Ajax, until now the personality has not changed. It's the same. "A strong personality is not the same as autocratic. I have a strong philosophy. SirAlex [Ferguson] was also confirming his strong personality when he won a lot of titles. "I hope I can do that or at least start with that philosophy." After Ferguson's trophy-laden eracame to an end last year, David Moyes was appointed as his successor but only lasted until April 2014. With Van Gaal bidding to restore the club to its former glory, he revealed Ferguson had spoken to him about the appointment, while also adding his desire for former players Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville to remainin coaching capacities. On whether he was daunted by looking to emulate Ferguson, he said:"Of course, he called me to congratulate me and we have spoken about [having]a cup of coffee. "We were always fighting in the elite competition of UEFA but we always had a glass of wine. "Nicky Butt is assisting us, Scholes we shall find a role for him but also for Phil Neville I believe. That's what we want. "It has to be also possible and that we have to look into. We have also to adapt qualities to these people. We have to speak with them about that personally." Ferdinand passes medical ahead of QPR move Posted: 17 Jul 2014 09:42 AM PDT In what must be considered something of a transfer coup given Ferdinand's glittering career, the 35-year-old is on the verge of becoming QPR's first close-season signing ahead of the club's Premier League return. The former England captain took to Twitter to reveal he is about to putpen to paper with the club following a successful medical. "Thumbs up re medical now on to the exciting part #Signature EnRoute to Loftus Road...#QPR," he wrote. Ferdinand is reported to have agreed a one-year deal at Loftus Road that means he is reunited with manager Harry Redknapp. Redknapp handed Ferdinand his first-team debut at West Ham in 1996 and will hope the veteran's experience can have a positive impact on and off the pitch at QPR. Ferdinand was released by United at the end of his contract after a 12-year spell at Old Trafford during which he won the Premier League six times as well as the UEFA Champions League. He made over 450 appearances for United, who he joined from Leeds United following the 2002 World Cup. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Van Gaal coy on Man United title prospects Posted: 17 Jul 2014 07:57 AM PDT Having formally started his Old Trafford tenure on Wednesday, Van Gaaltook his first news conference as manager of the 20-time English champions on Thursday. Boasting coaching experience with the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and, most recently, Netherlands,Van Gaal has clinched league titles in every country he has worked in. The 62-year-old is nowtasked with returning United to the upper reaches of the Premier League after they finishedseventh in David Moyes'first term in charge. However,Van Gaal would not be pressed on a prediction or a target for his first season at the club - instead callingfor patience in assessing his squad. "I do my utmost best. I cannot give predictions becauseyou never know. It's the biggest club inthe world," he said. "I have to preparea team and adapt to this big club. It shall not be easy but when you see my career you see what I have won and that I can say. "The future shall show if I can do that again. This is the biggest club because of being known worldwide, but you are never the biggest club because every season, you have to prove and last season you are seventh. "Then you are not the biggest club.I worked for Barcelona, in my opinion thenumber onein Spain, at Ajax we were numberin the Netherlands and at Bayern, numberone inGermany. "Now I am in Manchester - the number one in England.I hope I shall fulfil expectation. It will be difficult." Van Gaal led Netherlands to the semi-finals ofthe FIFA World Cup in Brazil and takes over fromMoyes - sacked in Aprilafter a dismal tenure at Old Trafford. Under the Scot, United missed out on European qualification for the coming season, with Van Gaal's reign likely to be a much stricter regime. United have already brought in Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera from Southampton and Athletic Bilbao respectively, but Van Gaal said the club's current crop will have chance to stake their claim for a place. "My motto is always the same. I want to look at the player now, the players present. I know the players but I don't know the playersI have coached," he added. "I want to see in the next first three, four weeks. Then maybe I shall buy other players. Shaw andHerrera werealreadyon the list so I gave my approval because I like them. "First Iwant to see the players performing my philosophy.I have to see how the players perform my philosophy. Then I can answer [what would be asuccess]. "I have not worked withmost of them. It is very importantthere is a click between [them and me]. "For me, the challenge is [to finish] first but you have to analyse after one season - it is dependable on the click between manager and coach." Van Gaal laments long injury for Carrick Posted: 17 Jul 2014 07:52 AM PDT New United managerLouis van Gaal confirmed the former Tottenham man will be out for "a long time", though stopped short of disclosing the nature of Carrick's issue. Van Gaal was speaking as United boss for the first time, having formally taken charge of the side on Wednesday. Carrick has made over 350 United appearances since moving from White Hart Lane in June 2006, and played 29 Premier League games last term, an Achilles tendon injury limiting his mid-season availability. And Van Gaal lamented the loss of Carrick's experience as he looks to make his mark on United's squad. He said: "There is, for example, Michael Carrick. He is injured, that is in my opinion a big blow because he is an experienced player." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Kluivert keen on Van Gaal reunion at Man United Posted: 17 Jul 2014 04:07 AM PDT Van Gaal formally took charge at United on Wednesday after his role as Netherlands coach came to an end following the nation's participation at the FIFA World Cup. Kluivert worked as Van Gaal's assistant at international level for two yearsand also played under the 62-year-old at both Ajax and Barcelona as well as for their country. And while Kluivert is disappointed to have been overlooked for the number two role at Old Trafford in favour of Ryan Giggs, he has not ruled out the possibility of forming part of Van Gaal's backroom staff at the Premier League club at some point. "I talked with Van Gaal and he said he would have loved to have given me the opportunity at Manchester United, but there was somebody already in my position," the legendary former striker told talkSPORT. "I'm fine with it. "I would have loved to come to Manchester United. I hope it can happen in the future, you never know." The synergy that exists between the pair means Kluivert is well placed to make predictions about how United will fare with Van Gaal. Although returning the club to the UEFA Champions League following the disappointment of last season is arguably the Dutchman's primary aim, Kluivert believes Van Gaal is setting his sights higher. He added: "He's absolutely going for the Premier League title. A club like Manchester United always has to go for the title and that's what he wants in his first year. "He's a great coach and I know he's looking forward to taking over at Manchester United. "It will be a difficult year but I know he can do it. He can work well with the squad. "Van Gaal is a great tactician and he wants to win matches. He likes to play offensive and attractive football as well though. He won't disappoint the Manchester United fans." Van Gaal loads up Football Manager on plane to Manchester Posted: 17 Jul 2014 03:45 AM PDT New Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal becomes immediately agitated when he isn't in some way involved in a game of football, according to sources who observed the Dutchman en route to England. Leaving Brazil shortly after the Netherlands' third-place play-off, Van Gaal flew to Holland then Manchester – a football-less period that he struggled to get through. Crew from the private jet company that flew Van Gaal say that he loaded up his career on Football Manager as soon as he was allowed to operate electronic devices, but he became agitated during takeoff and landing. "He was straight into a saved game that appeared to have been going for some time," flight catering manager Claire Davies told FourFourTwo. "All the players had these odd names that sounded genuine but weren't real players, so you could tell it was something like 2035 on the game. Either that or he was managing in Holland. "He became quite animated at times. You could see him gesturing at the little dots to get back and then to break. Then he'd bring on Tim Krul for some reason." Van Gaal was contented for much of the flight, but things almost became ugly when he was forced to put the laptop away to be served a meal. "He wasn't happy," Davies recalled. "He kept saying it was ridiculous that his fixture list was being manipulated this way. He asked me lots of times whether I knew what kind of pressure managers are under. "Eventually he allowed us to serve him, but then he immediately began trying to lay out formations with his food and successfully played the drinks cart offside by going to the toilet. "It would seem to me that this guy really likes football." Van Gaal has always been known for his immersion in the game. His wedding last year, which took place at half-time in a Holland game, was almost marred by Van Gaal substituting himself for Patrick Kluivert after the vows to keep himself fresh for other upcoming ceremonies.
