Rooney: Hodgson is the right man for England

Thursday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Uruguay in Sao Paulo left England on the brink of elimination, with their fateconfirmed on Friday when Costa Rica beat Italy 1-0 in Group D. Despite seeing his countrygoout atthe group stage for the first time since 1958, Rooney has givenhis full support to coach Hodgson, as England begin to set their sights on their UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. "No doubt about it, Roy is the man to take us forward," the Manchester United striker told a press conference. "We appreciate what he has done. In my opinion he has changed the way we playand you can see the progression. "I know the results have been disappointing but as a team we can feel we're getting better and hopefully this will make us better as a team. "He's put great enthusiasm into the team and put a great set of young, exciting players in place." As they come to terms with the bitter disappointment of an early departure from Brazil, Rooney has also called upon the rest of the England squad to use the failure as a motivating factor in the future. "The young players can come to this tournament and learn from it, we all can," he added. "It's vital we do that. We have to remember the pain and come the next tournament we have to make sure we don't feel that again."

Rooney apologises for World Cup elimination

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 07:49 AM PDT

After consecutive 2-1 losses to Italy and Uruguay, England needed Cesare Prandelli's side to do them a favour by beating Costa Rica on Friday, but the Italians succumbed to a surprising 1-0 defeat. Although qualification looked highly unlikely before Costa Rica's win, the result confirmed England's elimination with a game still to be playedin Group D. Rooney's performances in Brazil were placed under huge scrutiny, though he has played key roles in both goals scored by the team in tournament, netting one and assisting Daniel Sturridge's effort against Italy. "Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup," he said on his official Facebook page. "Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out. "Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted!" Manager Roy Hodgson has been publicly backed by the Football Association despite their elimination, and the 66-year-old is confident they can make an impact at future tournaments. He said: "We had high hopes, we thought we could make an impact, but we haven't won the games. To make an impact you have to win games and we've lost both of ours. "I believed the team, going forward, would be a very good team - there are a lot of good young players. Even against Uruguay we saw some good individual performances. "But results colour everything. I don't think there is any need to have doubts that this group of players will go on to do some good things in times ahead. "The team is evolving and I'm proud of the way they have approached this tournament, everything they have put into it. "We've worked so hard, we've done so much preparation for this tournament, we think we came to the tournament well-prepared. "We had really big hopes that we were going to make the country proud by going far in the tournament, but we haven't done that."

Van Persie hails fantastic Robben

Posted: 21 Jun 2014 06:47 AM PDT

The Dutch laid a marker down in their opening Group B fixture against defending champions Spain, coming from a goal down to thump Vicente del Bosque's men 5-1. Van Persie and Robben netted a brace each in that match, and both men took their tally to three for the tournament as once again the Netherlands showed their fighting qualities against Australia, coming back from 2-1 down to win 3-2. Robben will have a chance to add to his haul in the final group game against Chile on Monday, although captain Van Persie misses out having picked up bookings in each of the previous two matches. And the Manchester United man waxed lyrical overRobben and everything he does for the team, explaining that the 5-3-2 system employed by Louis van Gaal was working perfectly. "For us, it's a little more difficult, because we both have a more central role to play,"said Van Persie. "But it works because we have scored six times and hopefully we can continue in that fashion. "Arjen is a fantastic footballer and I love playing with him. "He is unpredictable for the opponent, but not for me and the team. "You can see all sides with him. He is quick, can score goals and provide assists."
