VIDEO: Liverpool striker bites someone again Posted: 24 Jun 2014 11:05 AM PDT Everyone’s favourite racist, Luis Suarez, has bitten an opposition player for the third time in his career. Suarez ran at Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini and bit in to his shoulder. Just like with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic before him, Chiellini hadn’t provoked Suarez in any way. He was given a ten match ban for that bite and a seven match ban for biting Otman Bakkal’s shoulder whilst at Ajax. Suarez has given several interviews over the past week crying the victim, claiming that the English media have treated him unfairly. Apparently being criticised for racially abusing Patrice Evra, something he was found guilty of and Liverpool never appealed, and repeatedly biting people isn’t worthy of criticism in his book. ------------ The Republik of Mancunia has brought out a brilliant downloadable World Cup preview. EXCLUSIVE Rio Ferdinand interview – I hope Holland win World Cup for Robin’s sake Posted: 24 Jun 2014 07:30 AM PDT
As some of you may know, Rio is a huge fan of the UFC and he recently took part in a training camp with the UFC's Brad Pickett who taught him what it really means to Feel The Fight! In part four of RoM's exclusive interview with Rio Ferdinand, our former defender talks to Noorudean Choudry about the World Cup. Ferdinand retired from international duty a year ago and has watched the World Cup from home and in Brazil. England lost both their opening games after some dreadful defending. Ferdinand discusses his thoughts on the England national team, trying to find some positives, whilst also revealing which countries he will be backing for the rest of the tournament. NC: How do you feel about footballers using social media such as Twitter? Is it something they should have the freedom to use as they wish, or should certain things like criticizing the manager and/or teammates be out of bounds? RF: I think you've got to find a balance, but at the same time not say anything to the detriment of the club. The club is the most important thing. That's what I've always tried to do. Of course you make mistakes along the way, but I never called out the manager or any of his tactics in public whilst I was still playing. If as a player you've got a problem with the manager, you go and speak to him about it. Once you leave the club then of course you're entitled to say what you want. NC: What are your feelings about England's performances at the World Cup? RF: I think in terms of positives a few of the younger players have proved they can perform on the biggest stage. There's Raheem Sterling of course; Ross Barkley has shown glimpses; Danny Welbeck in the game against Italy and obviously Daniel Sturridge scored, so I think there's some positives we can take from the tournament. But obviously you need to win games and we didn't do that. NC: Yes, it's a weird one in that despite the two defeats, there have been a number of positives as compared to previous World Cups… RF: Yes, it's better than last time round when we went out with a whimper. This time at least there are some positives, whereas last time there was nothing to take from the performances. Who would you like to win the World Cup now that England are out? RF: Having been to Brazil and seen how passionate they are over there, I'd like to see them win it. For Robin's sake I wouldn't mind if the Netherlands won it either. There's also Argentina and Messi; the way he has started the tournament it would be a fairytale ending for him to win it and finally put to rest any doubts and comparisons to Maradona. As some of you may know, Rio is a huge fan of the UFC and he recently took part in a training camp with the UFC’s Brad Pickett who taught him what it really means to Feel The Fight! In part three of RoM’s exclusive interview with Rio Ferdinand, our former defender talks to Noorudean Choudry about life after United. Having spent the final season of his career at United barely playing under David Moyes, which was resolved when Ryan Giggs replaced him and relied upon Rio once again, Rio is left to regret not getting to experience life under Louis van Gaal. However, Rio reckons that the Dutchman will do things differently than the season before, which can only be a positive thing for the club. NC: What would you say was the biggest difference between United under Ferguson and United under Moyes? It's funny you should say that as I'm currently working on a new book which covers that in some detail, so it's probably best for you to wait to read that for yourself! NC: Are you disappointed that you'll miss out on playing under Louis van Gaal? RF: Yes, a little bit. But you can't cry over spilt milk, it happened. It's a new era now and I wish him well. I hope they do well and go on to win the league next year. Time will tell. I think he'll come in and do things a bit differently to how they were done before, so hopefully that will be a good thing. NC: Is it weird to think that you won't be returning to Carrington in a few weeks' time? RF: When pre-season starts it'll probably hit home a bit more. I went to pick up a few bags the other day and I got a little bit choked up sitting in my car, thinking this is the last time I'm going to be seeing this place. Of course it's emotional because I'm leaving with a lot of memories. NC: I suppose it's not just the players, it's all the staff too… RF: That's what I mean. None of the players were there when I went in. It was all the staff I didn't get to say goodbye to. I only found out I wouldn't be staying on the last day of the season so I didn't get a chance to go back in. This was an opportunity to say goodbye to all the dinner ladies and everyone there who made my life easier. It was my chance just to say thank you. NC: You're obviously a free agent now so you're no doubt considering your options for the coming season. When you do think you'll know it's time to hang up your boots and retire from playing? RF: I don't know. Every single ex-player you speak to advises you to play on as long as you can. It's a difficult question to answer because until you get that feeling I don't think you know. NC: Watching the recent documentary following Beckham across Brazil, he spoke about how he still gets the urge to come out of retirement now and again… RF: Yes, exactly. I don't want to experience that feeling. I want to finish at the right time and in the knowledge that I've done all I can. We'll see. EXCLUSIVE Rio Ferdinand interview – What happened with Kenyon and Chelsea Posted: 24 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT
Ferdinand’s popularity amongst the fans took a hit when negotiations over a contract were fairly drawn out in 2005, following his eight month ban. When Ferdinand was then pictured in a restaurant in London with his agent and Chelsea’s chief executive at the time, Peter Kenyon, the relationship between player and fans was in tatters. Time is a healer though and Ferdinand’s commitment to the club from this moment on, along with the trophies he significantly contributed to, and how bonkers he went when United scored a big goal, repaired the damage for many reds. Ferdinand has always insisted this was just a chance meeting and in this part of the interview he discusses this further, whilst also reflecting on how he is perceived today by United fans. NC: Which players would you say you got on with the best during your career? RF: On the pitch my relationship with Nemanja Vidic was probably the best for obvious reasons – playing alongside each other for so many years and being so successful together. Off the pitch there have been so many – at the beginning there was Wes Brown and then Wayne Rooney. Obviously Michael Carrick and myself both came through at West Ham so we always had that relationship. But I'm lucky in that I've got a great relationship loads of the lads – Scholesy, Giggsy, Fletch, Robin, Wazza, Welbz…it's not fair for me to name just one because I'm good pals with all of them. NC: How do you think you're perceived by United fans in general, and how does that make you feel? RF: I've got to be honest with you, I don't know. I think time will tell. Hopefully people will appreciate me in years to come. NC: I think purely in terms of your talent and accomplishments, it's pretty unanimous that you're one of the best defenders to have played for United…. RF: That's what you play for. To receive those kinds of plaudits from the fans and people who watch the game. If that's the opinion of some people then that's great. I just want the fans to know that there was never any doubting my desire to stay at the club. There's obviously been one or two issues over the years but nothing that ever made me want to leave this club. NC: I get the feeling that the biggest issue most United fans have ever had with you is the now infamous incident when you were pictured at a restaurant with Peter Kenyon… RF: Again, I explain that in my new book, but I just want to reiterate that I was never a part of that meeting. I bumped into my agent and he was sat with Peter Kenyon. It was literally just a case of me popping in to say hello. I don't even think I ordered a drink! I left after 10 or 15 minutes, but somebody obviously took a photo. A snapshot of a moment you can lead to so many stories. NC: Do you think you'll still support United now that you've left the club? RF: 100%. I'll be a United supporter for the rest of my life, so will my kids. It's in me now, so I can't get rid of it! What happened when Rio Ferdinand put the gloves on and met UFC’s Brad Pickett? EXCLUSIVE Rio Ferdinand interview – Leaving Leeds for us and wanting to stay forever Posted: 24 Jun 2014 04:34 AM PDT
As some of you may know, Rio is a huge fan of the UFC and he recently took part in a training camp with the UFC’s Brad Pickett who taught him what it really means to Feel The Fight! Rio spent 12 years at United and won a ridiculous number of trophies, including six league titles and the European Cup. When he was at Leeds as their captain, it was hard to imagine what he would go on to achieve at United. He’s openly admitted in the past that he hated United and used to claim he would never sign for us. In this first of a four part interview, talking to my good friend Nooruddean Choudry, Rio discussed leaving Leeds for United, and that when given the opportunity, he didn’t give it a second thought. He also talks about how after signing for United, he had planned on spending the rest of his career at the club. NC: When you first started in football, did you think it would last? RF: No, not at all. It's funny because we had a little party for the kids yesterday. I was sitting there watching them surrounded by all their friends, and thought back to when I was younger. I never really made a huge effort to make lots of friends within football in the early years purely because I didn't think I'd be doing it for very long. You don't expect it. Perhaps if I'd expected it to continue, it wouldn't have happened. In a funny way I kept myself on my toes by not fully allowing myself to believe it would last. Obviously in my heart I wanted to stay in football, but I think the mentality I had was right for me. I didn't let myself become complacent because in football you can never tell. I didn't allow myself to take it all for granted. NC: And when you joined Manchester United, were you hoping that you'd remain at the club for the rest of your career? RF: 100%. The minute I walked through the door and sat next to the boss at the press conference, I knew that I wanted to stay here for the rest of my career. But as you know in football you can't think more than a year ahead. All I was thinking was that I want to play well this year and hopefully win some trophies and then the manager will hopefully keep me on. Every year I felt the same thing – I want to play well enough for the manager to keep me here. You spend your career living in hope. NC: So there's always that uncertainty year after year? RF: For me it was never a question of whether I wanted to stay at the club; I always did. It was more a case of whether the club wanted me. As long as that was still the case, I was always going to stay. The only way I was ever going to leave was if the club told me I was no longer needed; only then was I going to leave. That's kind of the way it went in the end. NC: Prior to signing for Manchester United you were the captain of Leeds United. Did that give you any reservations about coming to Old Trafford in terms of the fierce rivalry between the two clubs? RF: Not at all. I'd been at Elland Road for eighteen months. Obviously I knew about the rivalry between United and Leeds but my main aim in football was always to win trophies. Up until that point I hadn't won a thing, so when the opportunity came along to join United I didn't think twice. I had the chance to come to the biggest club in the world and work under the best manager in football – how could I turn that down?
