World Cup predictions: Netherlands, France and Belgium to win

Brazil2014

For United fans – once the England mess is cleared away – the World Cup has been as interesting from a managerial standpoint as it has been from a players standpoint.

With United manager Louis van Gaal taking Netherlands to the Round of 16, Netherlands v Mexico will be watched for LvG’s tactical approach to the game more than it’ll be appreciated for the talents of United strikers Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez.

In fact, with Manchester United still looking to sign a central defender, fans will be watching Netherlands’s Bruno Martins Indi with a lot of interest too.

The Dutch are favourites against a Mexico side that’s only met expectations by qualifying for the group stages, and how these two teams more comfortable on the counter play will be interesting to watch.

The Sunday game isn’t the only one with United players involved – Patrice Evra will start for France in their game against Nigeria and Marouane Fellaini is expected to start (with Adnan Januzaj on the bench?) for Belgium in their game against the USA.

France were unimpressive in their 0-0 draw against 10-man Ecuador in their final group game, however they should eb a different prospect altogether when it comes to Nigeria. Evra’s ability to create chances from the left flank will be important considering Nigeria have kept two clean sheets so far in this World Cup.

For Belgium, Fellaini will be crucial against a fast and aggressive USA team, and if he can lead Belgium to the quarters it will only bode well for United – we need him playing at his best, and he has seemed to grow in confidence in this World Cup.

Predictions: Netherlands, France and Beligum to win. Good odds on this acca if you’re looking for a betting tip. Also, RvP to score.

United confirm Shaw’s arrival

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 07:05 AM PDT

1566FFE474394426A29ED9FE40F4F631Manchester United have officially announced their second signing in less than 24 hours, with England international Luke Shaw arriving at Old Trafford from Southampton in a deal worth around £33m.

The 18-year-old completed a medical on Thursday night and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal thought to be worth in the region of £100,000-per-week, instantly becoming the most expensive teenager in English football’s history, beating the record previously held by one Wayne Rooney.

United had had Shaw on their radar since David Moyes’ pursuit of Leighton Baines ended in failure as the England international signing a new deal at Everton but the deal looked to have stalled when Southampton rejected a £27m offer for the 18-year-old, before United submitted a new, improved, bid of £33m.

“I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me,” said Shaw.

“I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club.”

Ryan Giggs welcomed the England international and said he was excited by Shaw’s potential: “Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential. He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player.

“I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfil that promise.”
