Butt to continue as United coach

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 03:19 AM PDT

65433.3Nicky Butt is expected to remain as Manchester United as a coach once the Louis Van Gaal era finally gets underway in its earnest, with the former United midfielder set to continue his role with the club’s academy.

A product of the Class of ’92, Butt will continue to manage the Under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League and he’ll also continue to work alongside Warren Joyce with the Under-21 side, after having being temporarily promoted to the first team fold by Ryan Giggs when the Welshman replaced David Moyes for the last four games of last season.

The Daily Mail reports that a source close to the club confirmed that both Butt and Joyce will remain on the coaching staff.

“The Class of 92 are very important to Manchester United.

“Nicky is a member of staff at the club, he has a position here and he is working with Warren Joyce, who will remain at the club.”

While Butt is expected to continue his coaching career at the club, Paul Scholes is unlikely to be part of Van Gaal’s backroom staff despite having been involved in a coaching role during Giggs’ interim tenure, while Phil Neville’s future also remains unclear and is likely to be resolved once he returns from Brazil where he’s been working as a pundit for the BBC.

“There are obviously processes in place and he will have his structures and a team, and you just hope you are a part of that,” said Neville, who arrived to Old Trafford as part of Moyes’ staff last summer, just before the start of the World Cup.

“He is obviously a busy man with Holland at the World Cup. It is good to get the new manager announced and the club can start looking forward again and looking to improve on last season.

“I hope to stay and it is business as usual as far as I am concerned,” he said. “I was first-team coach last year. I am not sure what my role will be next year but over the next couple of weeks I will find out about my role and hopefully I will be involved at Manchester United.”

United’s second signing imminent

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:52 AM PDT

luke shawLuke Shaw is poised to become a Manchester United by the end of the week after he passed a medical on Thursday night ahead of a £27m deal which will bring the Southampton left-back to Old Trafford this summer.

Having announced the signing of Ander Herrera for £29m on Thursday, United look to have finally kickstarted the long-awaited revolution that had been anticipated since Louis Van Gaal was appointed manager before the World Cup and, so far at least, United seem to have learnt some valuable lessons from last summer’s fiasco.

While Herrera was somewhat of a surprise signing given United had been linked with a host of different midfielders over the last five weeks, Shaw had been firmly on United’s radar since the turn of the year and his arrival represents a major coup for United, given that at one stage Chelsea looked odds-on favourite to win the race for the 18-year-old, who supported the West London club as a child.

Chelsea, however, reportedly baulked at the price Southampton demanded for their left-back, while United were happy to fork out £27m plus a further £3m in add-ons for the man who enjoyed a superb season at Southampton and ended up forcing his way into the England squad for the World Cup, winning his third cap against Costa Rica as England’s World Cup campaign came to a premature end.

Shaw will rival Patrice Evra for the left-back spot, a position that has been cause for major concern over the last couple of seasons, as Evra’s attacking threat has diminished while he’s become a defensive liability and after David Moyes’ pursuit of Leighton Baines ended with the England left-back signing a new contract at Goodison Park, United knew they had to move fast to find a replacement for Evra.

In Shaw, they’ve found exactly that sort of player, for the youngster is quick, excellent defensively and a threat going forward and has already gained experience at the highest level, having played 60 Premier League games despite only turning 19 later this month. The fee, of course, will attract critics, as United have succumbed to the premium tax that is applied to young, talented, English players but should Shaw live up to the expectations, he could be a superb investment.

United confirm first signing

photoManchester United have confirmed the arrival of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao on a four-year deal with an option for a fifth, after triggering the Spaniard’s buy-out clause.

United’s interest in the 24-year-old midfielder had unexpectedly resurfaced during the week and Herrera underwent a medical at Carrington yesterday afternoon, but the move looked to have stalled this morning, as Athletic Bilbao issued a statement in which they announced a £28.8m offer from United had been rejected.

The transfer, however, went ahead despite the initial fear that it might take longer than expected for United to land their man and Herrera was unveiled as a Manchester United player earlier this afternoon.

“Ander is a fantastic young player, with great energy and creativity,” said Ryan Giggs.

“We believe him to be one of the brightest young prospects in Spain and I am certain he will be a big hit with the United fans. I'm delighted he has made the decision to come to Manchester and play his part in the club's future. I'm looking forward to seeing him in action on our summer tour to America."

In his first interview as Manchester United player Herrera said: “Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true. I have played at Old Trafford for Athletic Club in the UEFA Europa League and it was one of the highlights of my career so far. I have joined United to do all I can to help the team reach the club’s objectives.

“Having arrived on Tuesday, I'm excited to now be living in Manchester and I can't wait for my first game in United's famous red shirt. I will never forget my time with Athletic Club and I'd like to thank the fans and staff for all their support and, above all, wish all my fantastic former team-mates all the best for the future.”
