First signing on hold as United have bid rejected

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 03:09 AM PDT

487091377--Copy_3163068Athletic Bilbao have announced this morning that they have rejected an offer from Manchester United for Ander Herrera, less than 24 hours after the midfielder was thought to have undergone a medical at Carrington.

United were close to sign the 24-year-old midfielder 12 months, before the deal collapsed on deadline day when lawyers claiming to be operating on behalf of United in Bilbao turned out to be impostors, as Athletic insisted United did not come close to meet Herrera’s release clause.

Surprisingly, however, rumours linking the midfielder with a move to Old Trafford resurfaced this week, with the deal looking all but done after United had seemingly triggered Herrera’s buy-out close, which stands at £28m but will raise to £32m from July 1st.

However, while the Athletic Bilbao midfielder traveled to Manchester yesterday with his agent and was shown around Carrington ahead of his medical, as United hoped to announce his arrival before the end of the week, in a statement issued this morning, Atheltic firmly denied a deal had been agreed between the two clubs.

“Athletic want to announce that they have this week rejected an offer from Manchester United, of around 36m euros (£28.85million), for the transfer of the economic and federative rights of the player Ander Herrera,” said the Basque club.

It is rather odd for a club to publicly announce they have rejected an offer and it could well be that Athletic are simply trying to portray Herrera in as bad a light as possible by leaving him no choice but to force a move or, which could be much more plausible, the Basque club are simply trying to hold on their player until July 1st when they’ll pocket an extra £4m.

However, Ed Woodward being Ed Woodward, don’t be surprised if the whole deal falls apart.

United face competition in race to Chile star

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 12:42 AM PDT

Alexis-SanchezManchester United have reportedly entered the race for Barcelona and Chile winger Alexis Sanchez but they will face strong competition for Arsenal in the race to sign the 25-year-old Chilean.

Sanchez has been one of Chile’s stars so far at the World Cup, scoring against in their opening game against Australia and setting up Eduardo Vargas’ opener against Spain as the South Americans knocked the defending champions out of the competition and his performances have attracted a lot of interest around Europe.

The Daily Mail and the Mirror believe United are prepared to table a bid in the region of £22m for the Barcelona man, with Arsenal, who have been admirer of the Chilean since his time in Serie A, also monitoring the situation in the knowledge that the 25-year-old will probably prefer joining a club that can guarantee him Champions League football next season.

With United’s winger department certainly not offering an embarrassment of riches, Sanchez would represent a great signing for United, who have lacked a quick, goalscoring winger since a certain Portuguese left for Real Madrid. Furthermore, Sanchez’s tactical versatility is such that he can also be deployed as second striker, a role which he occupies for Chile.

Sanchez joined Barcelona from Udinese for €26m (£20.8m) in July 2011, after impressing during his three-year spell in Serie A, during which he scored 20 times in 95 league appearances. The Chilean hit the ground running at the Camp Nou, scoring 15 goals in all competitions in his first campaign and 11 in the following season, before scoring a career-best 21 goals in all competitions last season, despite suggestions that Neymar’s arrival would make things harder for him.

With Barcelona looking to finance a £80m move for Luis Suarez, Sanchez might have to leave the Camp Nou this summer, though he could be included in the Suarez deal as a make weight were Barcelona and Liverpool to opt for a player-plus-cash deal.
