Dutch talent could follow Van Gaal to United Posted: 15 Jun 2014 03:12 AM PDT
The 23-year-old, the son of former Ajax captain Danny Blind, who’s now Van Gaal’s assistant for the national side, was one of the best players on the pitch as the Dutch came from behind against the world champions and he set up Robin Van Persie’s equaliser with a wonderful left-footed cross that cut Spain’s defence wide open.
Having started his career as defensive midfielder – a position he sometimes still occupies for both club and country – Blind was moulded into a left-back by Ajax coach Frank De Boer, under whom Blind has won three Eredivisie titles in a row, and has been deployed in the same role by Van Gaal. With United’s bid for Luke Shaw looking increasingly more complicated than it did a few weeks ago, Van Gaal could opt to bring Blind to Old Trafford in the summer, particularly as the 23-year-old’s versatility would also help bridge a gap in United’s moribund midfield, an area the Dutch manager badly needs to strengthen ahead of next season. Last season Blind played 45 games in all competitions for Ajax and, over the last two campaigns, he was an ever-present figure in the club’s Champions League campaign – including Ajax’s 3-1 win and 2-2 draw against Manchester City – when he stood out in a relatively inexperienced side courtesy of his ability to brilliantly read the game The Mirror reports that a bid in the region of £12m could be enough to lure Blind away from the Amsterdam Arena, but the Dutchman, who’s under contract with Ajax until 2016, is likely to attract interest from a host of different clubs. |
