Colombias James Rodríguez sizzles to end Uruguay World Cup saga Posted: 28 Jun 2014 03:03 PM PDT Uruguay have followed Luis Suárez in departing the World Cup though, unlike their talismanic striker, they had no cause for shame at this exit. This nations outrage at the sanction handed to the Liverpool forward will pursue them back to Montevideo but, if the sense of fury ever subsides, they might concede it was a Colombian genius, rather than the actions of a flawed one of their own, who jettisoned them from the tournament. James Rodriguez was afforded a deafening reception upon his departure five minutes from time here, the tournaments leading scorer having registered the brace which eased his wonderfully impressive side into a quarter-final against Brazil next week. If Chile scared the hosts in Belo Horizonte on Saturday, what awaits them in Fortaleza is potentially terrifying so slick and at ease are this Colombia team. Continue reading...![]() |

Luis Suárez: Uruguayans are hurting but we can't go on defending him at any price Posted: 28 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT Uruguay has closed ranks around Luis Suárez. But amid the controversy over the striker's ban for biting at the World Cup, the football-mad nation needs to avoid conspiracy theories Click here for the Spanish version Lucidity has been suspended until further notice in Uruguay. These are difficult times for those who wish to stop and think. The entire nation feels aggrieved, wounded, humiliated. The hero of a motherland has been banished thanks to an international conspiracy. Virtually everyone believes that what we are dealing with here is a manoeuvre to halt this tiny but brave country, which threatens to repeat its feat of 1950 by lifting the World Cup for a third time and once again frustrate the interests of the powerful. The unanimity that prevails is unprecedented. A former president, Julio María Sanguinetti, once said that in Uruguay "we speak in Spanish, eat in Italian and think in French". It is an allusion to our habit of arguing about everything, to the fact that there are positions for and against anything, from the trivial to the sacred. Continue reading...![]() |

Brazils Neymar steps up against Chile to keep World Cup dream alive Posted: 28 Jun 2014 02:22 PM PDT Hosts far too reliant on their talismanic No10 but the nerveless, feather-footed star delivers yet again on the big stage Oh, Brazil. The hosts are into the quarter-finals of their World Cup of World Cups after beating Chile on penalties at the end of a thrilling, gruelling 1-1 draw in Belo Horizonte. Brazil went to the well one more time here, trusting that this muscular team garnished with a single brilliantly creative No10 would have enough teeth to gouge their way through into the last eight. In the event it took the blind emotional inspiration of a penalty shootout, although even then Neymar managed to take a scenestealing supporting role to the star man Júlio César, who saved two of Chiles penalties. As the Estádio Mineirão erupted in a rolling roar of relief and joy after Gonzalo Jaras decisive missed kick, Neymar collapsed and lay face down in the centre circle. It is to be hoped when Fifa finally settles its eight-team guest list for the World Cup quarter-finals they remember to add the now-standard plus 10 to Neymars invite. Continue reading...![]() |

Brazil beat Chile on penalties to reach World Cup quarter-finals Posted: 28 Jun 2014 12:07 PM PDT Pictures: the latest images from Belo Horizonte It was an epic contest and, when it was all done, the final explosion of joy and bedlam told us Brazil had made it to the quarter-finals and the World Cup would not have to go on without its hosts. Chile had given everything but, ultimately, it all came back to that moment, at 2-2 in the penalty shootout, with one player left on each team. Neymar, superstar, kissed the ball, shuffled his feet and put his shot in the corner. Gonzalo Jara hit the post and Brazil, finally, could breathe. They had made it difficult for themselves after taking the lead courtesy of Jaras own goal in the first half and the referee, Howard Webb, might have needed a wig to leave the country if Chile had been more accurate from 12 yards. Webb, from a poor vantage point, denied Brazil an early penalty when Hulk went down under Mauricio Islas challenge and, more controversially, disallowed a second-half goal from the same player. It was not a controversy that would have stayed with him like the 2010 final. There would, nonetheless, have been significant fallout if Brazil had gone on to lose. Continue reading...![]() |
