Brazils charming Zorro or charlatan? Fred can flourish in homecoming

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Stage is set for Brazils No9 to reward faith of fans in his home town, Belo Horizonte, where they take on Chile in the last 16

Three games into their home World Cup Brazil have so far achieved a rare state of purposeful ambiguity, managing to look both incisive and blunt, settled but scratchy, serene but fraught, often within the same half hour of tournament football. As Luiz Felipe Scolari prepares his side for a tricky-looking last-16 tie against Chile, stronger opponents than any Brazil have played so far and a team who will press and harry and exploit decisively signs of weakness and nerves, the consensus here is that it is time for Brazil to shift gear. They must regain the level of intensity and precision the Seleção have shown at times under Scolari in the last year. In Belo Horizonte, the venue for s match, this sense of ambient longing is centred more precisely around one of this citys favourite sporting sons. The moment has arrived: will the real Fred please stand up.

It must be said that Frederico Chaves Guedes, first choice centre-forward for the World Cup favourites and a small scale Belo Horizonte striking legend, has taken something of a battering outside his home state in the last two weeks. In England the response seems to be a general sense of bafflement that this footballing superpower, a nation of 170 million, has somehow ended up with a game, moustachioed, muscular imposter leading its attack, a raffle-winner of a Brazilian centre-forward. On the BBC, even that renowned global football frontiersman Alan Shearer has picked up the theme, finding himself embroiled in an unlikely spat with Dani Alves, who described Shearer as idiotic after some dismissive but fair comments about Freds effectiveness as a Brazilian centre-forward.

World Cup 2014: Attacking coaches are going for it, says Gerard Houllier

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 01:59 PM PDT

Fifas technical study group leader says that a sense of abandon has allowed forward players to shine at the Brazil World Cup

After all the mid-tournament distraction of bites, bans and bonuses comes an antidote of sorts. This World Cup has thrilled but, for once, the memories of extravagant dribbles, diving headers or elaborate, rat-a-tat build-up play culminating in rewards in front of goal are not deceptive. Statistically, and in its current format, these have been the most attack-minded finals ever. The knockout phase may yet bring caginess but, to date, it has paid off to be bold.

When South Koreas Kim Seung-gyu parried Divock Origis shot at the Arena Corinthians on Thursday and Jan Vertonghen reacted sharpest to convert the rebound, becoming Belgiums first goalscoring captain in this competition since the current coach Marc Wilmots registered against Russia 12 years ago, the net had bulged for the 136th time in 48 matches in Brazil. The previous record for a 32-team tournament had stood at 130 back in 2002, and there had been only 101 goals in the group stage back in South Africa. Indeed, that month spent from Highveld to the Cape coast yielded only 145 goals in total.

World Cup 2014: a colourful carnival of football that could be the best ever

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:42 PM PDT

The goals record for the modern era could be broken in Brazil as the world hopes the drama will continue in the knockout stage

Sometimes, it is the little moments from these tournaments that linger in the memory. The night this week, for example, when a group of 20 or so Mexicans made their way along Copacabana, past all the battered old camper vans parked on Avenida Atlântica, calling in at every open-air bar along the strip to gesture they wanted total silence. It took some doing but eventually they managed it. They were bare-chested, clutching beer cans, rocking the Red Hot Chili Peppers look, and once they had everyones full attention they shattered their own silence. It was the loudest, most impassioned rendition of the Himno Nacional Mexicano their audience may ever hear.

That stretch of sand has become a kaleidoscope of different coloured flags and football kits over the past few weeks. A lot of the vans, with Chilean ribbons fluttering from the aerials and windows, have navigated their way across the Andes. Others have come from Argentina, decked out in the colours of the Albicelestes and hired out as self-catering hotels. Kids from the favelas offer bags of nuts and home-made caipirinha. Street-sellers hawk Neymar tops. Its always Neymar. There are even dogs in Rio de Janeiro wearing Neymar jackets.

Howard Webb caught in the middle of Brazil and Chile row over favouritism

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:19 PM PDT

Brazilians angrily reject suggestions of home bias
Webb will referee this tie for second consecutive World Cup

Brazil have reacted furiously to what they believe have been pre-match attempts by Chile to put pressure on the English referee, Howard Webb, who will take charge of the World Cup last-16 meeting between the nations, describing them as immature, ridiculous and deeply disrespectful. Several figures from the Chilean setup, including the striker Alexis Sánchez, have said that they are worried about the refereeing for Saturdays tie.

Their concerns are rooted in what they consider favourable home-town decisions for Brazil thus far, the dubious penalty awarded to Fred in the opening tie against Croatia and the failure to disallow the strikers headed goal against Cameroon in the final group game, when he appeared to have been offside. Chile were aggrieved at the standard of officiating in their last match the 2-0 group stage loss to Holland when the Chilean Football Association President, Sergio Jadue, was heavily critical of the Ghanaian referee, Bakary Gassama.

Luis Suárez needs treatment, says Fifa chief, but lawyer plans appeal

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:11 PM PDT

Jérôme Valcke: He should do something for himself
Lawyer: Court of arbitration will have to revoke this ruling

The Fifa secretary general, Jérôme Valcke, has urged Luis Suárez to seek professional help and confirmed his previous biting offences were taken into account when deciding his unprecedented ban.

Despite Suárezs Italian victim, Giorgio Chiellini, declaring the four-month ban from all football excessive and support for the Uruguayan from Diego Maradona among others, Valcke said he applauded the decision. I think he should find a way to stop doing it, said Valcke. He should go through a treatment. I dont know if one exists but he should do something for himself because it is definitely wrong.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has stepped in to assure Stephen Keshis Super Eagles squad will be paid their bonus money after players boycotted training in Campinas on Thursday.

Santiago prepares to come alive again as Jorge Sampaoli makes Chile believe

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 10:12 AM PDT

Life in Chile rarely gives much cause for celebration, and the public are eagerly embracing the teams World Cup success

Chile have not come to Belo Horizonte to make up the numbers. Jorge Sampaolis side believe they can cause an upset by eliminating the hosts and, by doing so, bring joy to a nation of 17 million people who are in desperate need of something to celebrate.

The Republic of Chile lies sandwiched between the Andes mountains and Pacific Ocean, in one of the most seismically active parts of the world. The country shakes continuously, and major earthquakes occur on a regular basis, the last one, measuring eight on the richter scale, just a few months ago in the far north.

Lies, damned lies and World Cup 2014 group-stage statistics

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 08:45 AM PDT

Stats show Serge Aurier has burned Brazil up, Holland are on the naughty step and Giorgios Samaras is the biggest victim

A quick pub quiz question: why has Norwich Citys Leroy Fer had a better World Cup than Lionel Messi? You might think the Argentinians four goals outweigh Fers solitary strike, but while Messi has scored a goal per hour in Brazil, the Dutch midfielder averages a goal every 15 minutes on the pitch.

Lies, damned lies, and all that. But some of the statistics of this group stage, even beyond the record-breaking headline figure of 136 goals scored, do make quite startling reading.
