World Cup 2014: Jan Vertonghen fires Belgium to win over South Korea Posted: 26 Jun 2014 03:12 PM PDT South Korea completed a miserable World Cup for Asia, becoming the fourth of four representatives to go out in the group stage as they lost to a much-changed Belgium side that played half the game with 10 men after the dismissal of Steven Defour. As it turned out, South Korea would have had to win by three to go through and that never seemed likely even before Jan Vertonghen followed in to score after Kim Seung-gyu had beaten away a drive from the prodigious 19-year-old forward Divock Origi. World Cup 2014: Thomas Müller hailed as remarkable after Germany winner Posted: 26 Jun 2014 02:13 PM PDT Klinsmann praises forward who is on target for Golden boot USA coach jubilant after escaping Group of Death despite loss Both coaches paid tribute to Thomas Müllers unique abilities as a goalscorer after he scored the only goal of a game in which both Germany and the USA progressed to the World Cups last 16. Perhaps that is no surprise, both Joachim Löw and Jürgen Klinsmann are German, after all, but with four goals in three matches Müller is joint the top scorer in Brazil and on course to become the first player to retain the Golden Boot award. Müller needed only five goals to achieve that honour in South Africa and at his present rate he could easily surpass that total at this tournament. Continue reading...![]() |

Portugal eliminated despite Cristiano Ronaldos goal beating Ghana Posted: 26 Jun 2014 11:12 AM PDT For Ghana, the abiding image at this World Cup will be the photograph of a dozen police vehicles or more, complete with flashing lights, transporting £1.7m in cash from Brasília airport to the team hotel in the early hours of the morning. James Appiahs players got their appearance money in the end but, rather predictably, they also suffered elimination and will return home in disgrace after a chaotic and shambolic chain of events. Portugal finally picked up a victory, courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldos first goal at these finals, but it was a case of too little too late for player and country. They finished third, behind the USA on goal difference, and will ruefully reflect on that opening game against Germany, when Pepe was sent off and they were thrashed 4-0. That is where the damage was done. Portugal laid siege to the Ghana goal in the closing 10 minutes, when Ronaldo, incredibly, had three decent chances to score. He failed to take any of them and Portugal were out. Continue reading...![]() |
Germanys Thomas Müller secures win but beaten USA reach last 16 too Posted: 26 Jun 2014 11:07 AM PDT Both Germany and the United States reached the last 16 as a result of this scoreline and the one in Brasilia, with a goal by Thomas Müller doing enough to allay suspicions that the Germans in charge of the two sides had colluded to produce a mutually satisfactory result. A dreary draw looked on the cards for a while and both sides ended the first half appearing content just to see out time, but Germany woke up and began to look a bit more like their old selves after the interval. Not to the extent of trashing the USAs goal difference which might have given Portugal the encouragement they needed but Müllers goal reflected German superiority and enabled them to finish top of Group G with seven points. Chiles Alexis Sánchez will use Brazil match to impress Premier League clubs Posted: 26 Jun 2014 10:48 AM PDT Chiles exciting winger may not be fully appreciated at Barcelona but his exploits at the World Cup are attracting English clubs Barcelona were leading 1-0 as last seasons first clásico entered its final ten minutes when Alexis Sánchez, a second-half substitute for Cesc Fábregas, burst on to a Neymar through-ball and outstripped Raphaël Varane with a devastating burst of acceleration. As the defender recovered, Sánchez paused briefly before executing the deftest of lobs over Diego López from 20 yards. It was a goal of rare beauty, worthy of winning the most iconic fixture in club football. It may well prove to be the pinnacle of the Chilean wingers frustrating three years at Camp Nou.
