Schmeichel: Van Gaal will transform Man United Posted: 21 May 2014 07:27 AM PDT The Dutchman was appointed earlier this month following the sacking of David Moyes in April - with the Scot having failed to live up to expectations after Alex Ferguson's retirement. Moyes was often accused of negative and slow-paced tactics during his ill-fated reign at Old Trafford as the club went from Premier League champions to a seventh-place finish. Schmeichel, who won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the 1998-99 UEFA Champions League with United, believes Van Gaal can ensure the return of attacking football at the club. "We've got someone who has managed at the very top of European football (at) Barcelona and Bayern Munich and he's with Holland in the World Cup," he said. "So we've definitely got somebody who is vastly experienced and has won before. "A year ago we were talking about another new manager at the club, we were all hopeful and looking forward. We're doing the same thing again this year. "Hopefully 12 months ahead we will be a lot happier, because it hasn't been a good season. "He's been a manager of Ajax a couple of times, he's been right in the core of creating the Ajax way of football, so he's a guy who likes to see and watch football being played beautifully and effectively, and trying to score goals. "I think we have to wait and see, but I'm convinced, going by where he's been, the way he plays with the Dutch national team, that's he's going to play attacking football." Having seen the club relinquish their league crown this season, Schmeichel feels Van Gaal should be targeting a title challenge in his first season. "This is Manchester United we're talking about and the spirit of Manchester United or the core thought of Manchester United is that we're number one, so we're always going to be looking at number one," the Dane added. "But, having had a season where we finished seventh, if we can get back into the swing of things and get qualified for the Champions League, that's going to be satisfactory. "But of course we'll be looking to win the Premier League again." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Luis Enrique coy over Fabregas future Posted: 21 May 2014 06:55 AM PDT Barcelona's new first-team manager signed a two-year contract on Wednesday and spoke of restoring the club's attacking philosophy during his first press conference, but was un-moved when it came to the future of his two midfielders. Fabregas has been linked with a return to the Premier League after struggling to force his way into the starting XI at Camp Nou, and his new manager was evasive when asked about his plans, before revealing he would sit down with Xavi. "Cesc? We are not getting into all the individual names now," the new manager said when asked about Fabregas. "We do not have to make decisions now, we have time. "I know Xavi, he is a friend, ex-teammate. We will sit down and talk, let us wait and see. However, the former Barca and Real Madrid midfielder was happy to comment on the qualities of Neymar and Javier Mascherano. "It's clear that Neymar is one of the team's most important players and I'm delighted that he's here," he added. "(Mascherano) has all the qualities to be captain. "There will be changes, we'll strengthen the team, good and important players will stay." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Hodgson pleased with Rooney in training Posted: 21 May 2014 06:48 AM PDT The Manchester United striker missed the final three games of the Premier League season with the problem but has trained in Portugal over the past week. He was not involved in shooting drills in Vale do Lobo on Wednesday, but Hodgson has been impressed with his commitment. The former Liverpool boss backed the 28-year-old to produce a strong performance in Brazil, having suffered with fitness problems in the build-up to the FIFA World Cups in 2006 and 2010. "Wayne realises what a good player he is. He will do everything he can to bring out the best in himself," Hodgson said. "The eyes of England, if not the world, are on him and he'll do everything he can to bring out his best qualities. "He spent the previous week at his villa in Portugal but he trained all through that week to make sure he is over his injury. "He said to me, 'When you arrive on Monday I want to be 100 per cent ready to train on the first day'. "He was disappointed to be left out of the training session (on Wednesday) because I wanted to protect his thigh. "If it was up to him he would have trained." Hodgson's men will face Peru, Ecuador and Honduras in preparation for their Group D opener against Italy on June 14. But the ex-Inter coach is not yet ready to focus entirely on that game in Manaus. "Italy is still three weeks off. It's much too early to concern ourselves with that now," he continued. "It's very much in our minds but (not in terms of) video preparation and tactics. "All I know is, having worked in Italy, that they will be under pressure and scrutiny. "Everyone in Italy will be expecting them to beat us. But there won't be many coaches who go into the World Cup without pressure. "Anything I read about other teams I take with a pinch of salt." Beckham surprised by Giggs retirement Posted: 21 May 2014 03:42 AM PDT Beckham and Giggs were part of the infamous Class of 92 at United, playing regularly under legendary former manager Alex Ferguson as the club won numerous titles. With Fergusons replacement David Moyes sacked after less than a year in charge, Van Gaal and Giggs have been tasked with returning the club to the upper echelons of the top flight after finishing seventh this season. While Beckham backed Giggs - who served as player-coach under Moyes before taking the reigns himself for four games following the Scots departure in April - to impress as assistant to the experienced Dutchman, he revealed his surprise at the 40-year-olds decision to hang up his boots. Im surprised hes retired because he was still playing great, he told Sky Sports News. Physically hes still in great condition, to play for so many years at the top level you have to be in great condition. Now he has a new role at the club and it was great to see him walk out as Manchester United manager for those four games. When youve got someone like Giggsy, who all the players respect and all the fans love, it makes a huge difference. His role now has totally changed and Im sure he will find it an easy transition because he takes things in his stride, hes not affected by anything. He knows the club better than most people who are at Manchester United now. Van Gaal, currently in charge of the Dutch national side, will take over at Old Trafford following the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. And Beckham, who won six Premier League titles at United before moving to Real Madrid in 2003, feels the former Ajax, Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach has the pedigree to turn United around. He has got a history of working with young players, bringing players through academy systems at places like Ajax, he continued. That can only be great for Manchester United. As a Manchester United fan and for Manchester United as a club, to have someone like this with his pedigree - he has worked with some of the biggest and best players in the world. Martinez: Barkley would not benefit from move Posted: 20 May 2014 07:15 PM PDT Barkley is expected to play a key role in Roy Hodgson's England side at the FIFA World Cup but even if the 20-year-old midfielder stars in Brazil, he will not be leaving Goodison Park if Martinez has his way. Chelsea are reportedly most interested in luring Barkley away from Everton. While the obvious reason for Martinez to keep Barkley would be self-interest, the Spanish manager argued he is more focused on what is best for his young charge. "No, because that would be wrong for him," Martinez said. "I always feel as a manager, you develop a relationship with players and you're always honest with them. "Ross is a phenomenal talent, probably the best English talent I have ever seen, but he is not the finished article yet and you need to be very careful. "It's our duty to protect him and I know Everton is the perfect place for him for the next 12 months." Martinez also hinted that if Everton could break into the top four of the Premier League next season and qualify for the UEFA Champions League - they finished fifth in 2013/14 - they might be able to tempt the attacking midfielder to stay on Merseyside. "In football, obviously you can never speak about the future. Obviously we need to come along and try to get into the top four positions to offer players like Ross the next stage of their development," the former Swansea and Wigan manager said. "But Ross is delighted at Everton and feels very much in the right place at the right time of his career." Barkley played 38 games in all competitions for Everton this season, scoring seven goals. |
