Van der Sar: Hoek can improve De Gea

Hoek has followed new manager Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford, replacing Chris Woods as goalkeeping coach at the Premier League club. Though, the 57-year-old will not arrive in Manchester alongside Van Gaal until the conclusion of the Netherlands FIFA World Cup campaign in Brazil. De Gea formed a good relationship with Woods as he was crowned Uniteds Player of the Season, before the coach was relieved of his duties at the end of a dismal campaign. But former United goalkeeper Van der Sar has first-hand experience with Hoek, who was his first goalkeeping coach at Dutch powerhouses Ajax during the 1990s, and the 43-year-old believes De Gea can become one of the best in the world under Hoeks guidance. He groomed me and helped me learn all the things I needed to know to be a successful footballer over a lot of years, Van der Sar said of Hoek, who also worked alongside Van Gaal at Bayern Munich. He should be a great help for David. He used to work at Barcelona so hell speak Spanish, although I know David speaks good English now. I think theyll be a good combination. Van der Sar added: Like Louis van Gaal, hes really exact with his exercises. They both put a lot of thought into them. He was one of the first guys I know who connected the goalkeepers with defenders and midfielders in terms of exercises. It wasnt only about practising kicks as a keeper, he would think about different situations you might be in during a game and try to find exercises and drills for us that he would combine with the outfield players.

Macheda signs for Cardiff

The Italian will join Ole Gunnar Solskjaers men on a free transfer on July 1, when his contract at Manchester United expires. Macheda had spells on loan at both Doncaster Rovers and Birmingham City in the Championship last season, and was particularly impressive at St Andrews, where he scored 10 goals in 18 appearances. Cardiff will hope the 22-year-old can show that sort of form in the second tier once again next season, as the Welsh outfit look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt following their relegation. Macheda, who worked with Solskjaer at United, identified the Norwegian as the main reason for his decision to join the club. Its a massive opportunity for me and it is with thanks to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that I am here, he told the clubs official website. He played a big part of my decision and Im really looking forward to starting this season. Last season I had a good spell on loan at Birmingham City, but this is a new chapter of my career now and I cant wait to get started and show everyone who I am. Knowing Ole, he wants to get back into the Premier League as soon as possible and the recent signings show that. Im here for the same reason. I feel that this is a great team and if we can have a good season and work hard then we can go straight back up.

De Gea: Spain are still best team in the world

Posted: 26 May 2014 07:49 PM PDT

Although Spain lost last year's FIFA Confederations Cup final 3-0 to Brazil, Vicente del Bosque's time remain top of the world rankings ahead of the upcoming World Cup finals. Spain have not relinquished the top ranking since winning the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa and De Gea, who is one of three goalkeepers in Del Bosque's squad, believes they deserve to be on top of FIFA's standings. "This team is the best in the world and hopefully we can win the title," the 23-year-old told reporters on Monday. "I'm happy to be here. In the Under-21s I played good football for several years, trying to play the same game as the best and with some very good players. "It's been a long and hard season for many of the national team players but they are the best in the world and hopefully we can win the title." The season-ending injury to Barcelona's Victor Valdes in March opened the door for De Gea to be picked for the World Cup. De Gea was selected in Del Bosque's provisional squad alongside Real Madrid's Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina of Napoli, meaning the three goalkeepers are all set to make the trip to Brazil. Valdes tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing for Barcelona in March, and De Gea felt sorry for the 32-year-old even if it meant he had gained a spot in the squad. "I haven't spoken to him (Valdes) but the injury is a shame," Manchester United's young gloveman said. "I send him a hug and wish him a speedy recovery."

Rooney, Sturridge set to lead line against Peru

The Three Lions still have three opportunities to experiment before their FIFA World Cup opener against Italy on June 14, with Hodgson keen to see Rooney and Sturridge combine on the field. Hodgson's men will continue their Brazil preparations from St George's Park on Wednesday, ahead of their clash with the Peruvians at Wembley. The 66-year-old said the Manchester United and Liverpool strikers will be given the chance to become England's first-choice forwards. "We haven't really seen them (together), have we?" Hodgson said, of Rooney and Sturridge. "We've seen an awful lot of the Sturridge-Suarez partnership at Liverpool but not a lot of Rooney-Sturridge partnership because they haven't had a lot of time to play together. "Now's our chance. From the time we get to St George's Park we start to move away from bigger focus on fitness and getting people in the right shape to tactical preparation. "That's when the partnerships will start to develop. It won't just be Rooney-Sturridge, we will be working on Welbeck and Lambert as well. "But I think it's too early to start making big bold statements and judgements on Rooney-Sturridge partnership being X or Y because we haven't seen enough of it." Hodgson said he is not expecting either player to drastically change how they play, although added Sturridge - who would be deployed higher than Rooney - would have to defend when required. "We will do the things you need to be professional and to be in the best shape," Hodgson said. "We want Wayne Rooney to go onto the pitch as Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, if he plays, to be Daniel Sturridge. "But at some point Sturridge might be required to work back and cover. Daniel plays down the centre but you want your attacking players on the ball where they can do damage. "Daniel is not a left-winger but if we're 1-0 up with a few minutes to go, he might have to do a job for the team on that side."
