Rooney struggling to be fit for Hull clash

The England striker sat out Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Sunderland as he has been hampered by a sickness bug as well as a hamstring problem. United interim manager Ryan Giggs revealed on the eve of Tuesday's Premier League clash with Steve Bruce's side that his leading scorer may have played his last game of the campaign at Old Trafford. The former Wales international told MUTV on Monday: "Wayne is probably struggling for the game. "He's not quite recovered. We'll continue to monitor him." Giggs, who is considering selecting himself to play against Hull, also revealed that Jonny Evans is not expected to feature in the final two games of the season due to a calf injury. There is more positive news of fellow defender Rafael da Silva, who is set to be back in contention to face the FA Cup finalists and Southampton on the final day. Giggs said: "Rafa has trained in the last few days and looks good. "He could be involved in the remaining two games." United could still climb into sixth place - and UEFA Europa League qualification - if they win both games and Tottenham lose to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Giggs eyeing Man United cameo against Hull

The 40-year-old was installed as interim manager at Old Trafford after David Moyes' sacking last month and yet to confirm his future plans, the visit of Hull could be his mark final competitive game at Old Trafford for the club where he has spent his entire career. The Welshman is eager to play at least a cameo role against his former team-mate Steve Bruce's Hull side, as United attempt to put a 1-0 home defeat against Sunderland on Saturday behind them. The champions can still salvage UEFA Europa League qualification from what has been a dismal campaign if they beat Hull and Southampton, provided sixth-placed Tottenham lose at home to Aston Villa on Sunday. And Giggs knows there is still plenty to play for as he mulls over his team to face the FA Cup finalists. Asked by the club's official website about the possibility of it being his final game at Old Trafford, he said: "I'll have to take that into consideration but I also want to win the game as manager as well. "I want to do what's best to win the game and not just make room for me in the starting line-up or on the bench, which I won't do. "Of course, the perfect scenario is me coming on and scoring a goal, the winning goal, and hopefully everyone will be happy but it doesn't always work like that. We'll have to wait and see what happens on the night." Tuesday will be former United captain Bruce's first visit to Old Trafford as Hull manager, with his side having already secured a Europa League berth. Giggs revealed that he has spoken to the Hull boss for advice since he took over from Moyes, as well as former team-mate and Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. "I have spoke to Brucie and Ole, two ex-team-mates. One has been in management for 15 or so years and the other has not been in management so long," he added. "It was great as both gave me different bits of advice. "With Brucie, I spoke to him about picking the team. I said to the press that the hardest thing was leaving people out, so he gave me a bit of advice on that."

Herrera wants to remain at Athletic Bilbao

Posted: 05 May 2014 03:25 AM PDT

The 24-year-old has played a key role in helping Ernesto Valverde's men to UEFA Champions League qualification this season, and was reportedly the subject of firm interest from Manchester United last year. Rumours continue to circulate that the midfielder could leave the Basque outfit, but Herrera has insisted he is happy where he is. "I have already made it clear, I don't want to leave Athletic," he is quoted as telling the Spanish media. "We have a great team and we have worked really hard to get where we are. We have proven our level even without Fernando (Llorente) and Javi (Martinez). "Above all else, Athletic and I are on the same path. This is where I belong, my place is here and I am very happy." Herrera also expressed his desire to be included in Vicente Del Bosque's Spain squad to travel to Brazil for next month's FIFA World Cup. "Some have said that Del Bosque may be interested in calling me up for the World Cup, that would make me happy," he added. "It would be a dream for me to go to the World Cup, but I know that it is extremely hard to get on the roster. The illusion is huge, so hopefully I will get in."

Jones understands Man United boo boys

Posted: 04 May 2014 11:56 PM PDT

United's disastrous Premier League campaign continued over the weekend after they were beaten 1-0 by relegation candidates Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday. The result left United languishing in seventh, six points off sixth-placed Tottenham, all but ending any hopes they held of UEFA Europa League qualification. United supporters voiced their disapproval with the performance, jeering the players at the final whistle, which Jones said was only fair. "They've had a difficult season," said Jones, ahead of Tuesday's home clash with FA Cup finalists Hull City. "It's not been easy for them, especially at Old Trafford. You can understand that totally. "We're now looking forward to Hull on Tuesday night. The only way to bounce back is to win a match and at least it's coming around quick." The fallen Premier League champions have one of the best away records in the league this season, winning 10 games on the road - the same amount as high-flying Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. But their form at Old Trafford has left a lot to be desired, losing a staggering seven games on home soil, something Jones cannot understand. "There's pressure in every game, but we go out to win every game," said the England international. "You look at the away games we've played, we're up there on form. But the home form, for whatever reason, has not been as good."
