Rooney sets his sights on Man United captaincy

Incoming manager Louis van Gaal will be tasked with picking a new skipper following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and the retirement of United legend Ryan Giggs, who will become the Dutchman's right-hand man next season. Rooney was favourite to wear the armband after the FIFA World Cup, but David Moyes' sacking has changed things, with Robin van Persie now set to lead the club as he already captains the Netherlands team coached by van Gaal. But the 28-year-old feels he is ready to lead from the front, though he would have no problem if his Dutch team-mate was given the honour "I do feel I'm ready for it but it's the manager's decision," Rooney told reporters at England's training camp in Portugal. "I've said before that I've captained United a few times and to get it on a full-time basis would be great. But obviously with the new manager coming in, it's his decision. "Whoever he chooses to be captain, I'll respect that and have no problems with it. "If he chooses someone else then honestly I've got no problems with that. I'll respect his decision. "Robin van Persie (above) is captain of his country, he's captained Arsenal and if Robin gets the nod then I'm sure he'll do a great job. "It is going to be an exciting time at the club." Rooney was one of United's standout performers during a horrendous campaign that saw the club relinquish their crown and miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in 19 years. But he understands he cannot take anything for granted, despite netting 19 goals last term. "When a new manager comes in, you always feel you have to prove yourself over again," he said. "When we go back into training, it will be like a new start and you've got to prove yourself again to make sure the manager picks you."

Rooney: No excuses at World Cup this time

Posted: 22 May 2014 05:46 AM PDT

Rooney is preparing for his fifth major international tournament and third World Cup finals after disappointing showings in 2006 and 2010. Eight years ago, Rooney was infamously sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho in England's quarter-final exit at the hands of Portugal in Germany. Last time out in South Africa, the Manchester United man struggled for fitness in the build-up to the finals and looked a shadow of his usual self as England were thumped 4-1 by Germany in the last 16 after squeezing through the group stages. This time, however, Rooney feels fully fit and he is relishing the pressure is on him to deliver. "Obviously I've been here before and I've said what I feel I can do and it hasn't happened," the 28-year-old said. "This is the one where I have to show what I can do. "I believe I'm in the best possible shape I can be in to do that. I'm ready for it, there'll be no excuses this time if I don't perform. "I've lived with that (expectation) throughout my career and I've no problem with that, I know what I'm capable of. There's certain people who I listen to after games and they're harsh on me and I'm really harsh on myself - and I know if I don't play well. "I want to show the world what I can do and I really believe this is the time to do it. "I'm settled down with my family. There's no issues whatsoever and I'm ready for this tournament. "I want to give everything, leave everything on the pitch and as I said before I won't have any excuses this time if it doesn't come off for me."

Scholes believes Rooney may be past his peak

Posted: 22 May 2014 05:14 AM PDT

After scoring on his debut for Everton it was not long before Manchester United came calling and Rooney has been a regular at Old Trafford since 2004. With a huge burden of expectation on his shoulders for both club and country, along with the sheer quantity of matches that he has played, Scholes is worried that the 28-year-old may have reached his peak earlier than expected, which could lead to an early retirement. "Wayne was in the Everton team at 16 years of age, in 2003," the former United midfielder wrote in a blog for Paddy Power."Since then he's played at Euro 2004, two World Cups, Premier League, and Champions League every year at United. "There's a chance he's worn out. "Wayne's peak may have been a lot younger than what we'd expect of footballers traditionally. "Age 28 or 29 has been the normal 'peak'. With Wayne, it could have been when he scored 27 league goals in 2011-2012 when he was 26. "Wayne might be a player who'd retire come 31 or 32, given the amount of football he's played." Scholes also suggested Rooney would only cement his place as a world-class player if he performed at a World Cup finals. Rooney has yet to score having played in two tournaments already, and his former team-mate insists it is time for him to shine on the world stage. "If Wayne is going to be one of the best footballers in the world, this World Cup is where he has to produce," Scholes added. "His best attributes are his energy, desire, a will to win which is unbelievable – but, above all, his goals. "He needs to use his energy more effectively now as he's a player who likes to be up front on his own and I don't think he's great with partnerships. "I'm not saying Wayne needs to be dropped but if form doesn't get up to scratch in the warm-ups, or in the first game of the World Cup, it'll be interesting to see if the England management team has the balls to make that decision." Roy Hodgson's England take on Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Brazil.

Scholes: Woodward has a lot to prove at United

Posted: 22 May 2014 01:19 AM PDT

Woodward came in for criticism for the way United conducted their transfer business before the 2013-14 season, with a number of targets reportedly falling by the wayside. And Scholes, who returned to assist Ryan Giggs in his four matches in charge at the end of the season following the departure of David Moyes, says Woodward has to show his credentials in such an important role in the upcoming months. "Edward Woodward has an awful lot to prove this time that he's good enough at his job," Scholes wrote in a blog for Paddy Power. "He has to bring the players in that the new manager wants. It's obvious that last year he didn't manage to do that. "If he doesn't, we are not going to get anywhere near the top." Scholes also said that the first player he would bring in would be Bayern Munich's Toni Kroos and, despite helping Giggs out at the end of the season, does not expect to be asked to follow the Welshman in joining Louis van Gaal's backroom staff. "I came back for Ryan Giggs for the last few games to try to help out but I'm not waiting for a phone call and don't expect to be at Old Trafford next season," he added. "Louis van Gaal has the credentials. He's been at the biggest clubs in the world but he has a major job on his hands at Man United. "It's a massive task and there's a big gap to fill to catch Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool next season. United are a long way behind. If Van Gaal gets them to the Champions League, it'll be a start."
