Republik Of Mancunia

Giggs’ Open Letter

Posted: 19 May 2014 07:59 AM PDT

Today is a fantastic day for Manchester United. Louis van Gaal is a great appointment and let me begin by telling you how delighted I am to be working with someone of his calibre. His credentials are second to none and I'm positive the club will thrive under his leadership over the coming years.

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from professional football and embark upon a new and exciting chapter in my life, as assistant manager of Manchester United. I am immensely proud, honoured and fortunate to have represented the biggest club in the world 963 times and Wales 64 times. My dream was always to play for Manchester United, and although it saddens me to know I won't be pulling on a United jersey again as a player, I have been lucky enough to have fulfilled that dream playing with some of the best players in the world, working under an incredible manager in Sir Alex Ferguson, and most of all, playing for the greatest fans in world football. I have always felt and appreciated your support.

I want to also give a huge thanks to the backroom staff and support teams we have and have had at Manchester United over the years. I would not have achieved the success I have without your continuing dedication and commitment to creating the best environment to enable the players to thrive. I would not have won 34 trophies in my career without you. I would also like to say a special thanks to my friends and family for all your love and support.

For me, today is a new chapter filled with many emotions – immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future. United fans I hope will share and echo my belief that the club, the management and owners, are doing everything they can to return this great club to where it belongs, and I hope to be there every step of the way. To the greatest fans in world football, thank you, I have loved every minute of playing for you and representing the biggest and best club in the world.

See you next season,

Ryan

Louis van Gaal – a formidable guy

Posted: 19 May 2014 06:56 AM PDT

VanGaalThere’s no bigger challenge in football than succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson. Knowing Louis van Gaal, it’s one he will relish. Like the great Scot, he’s a serial winner: treating triumph and disaster as the same.

A title winner at each of his four previous clubs he is the most decorated Dutch manager in history. If one word could describe him – and there are plenty – it’s ‘fundamentalist’. His coaching philosophy, as far as he’s concerned, is the right approach. You know what you’re getting. “I am who I am; confident, arrogant, dominant, honest, hard-working and innovative,” the Amsterdam native once declared.

For a club in transition, which United are, there’s no one better to steer the ship. His greatest strength remains team-building: rejuvenating squads and implementing his ethos in the process.

Van Gaal, according to Felix Magath – predecessor at Bayern Munich – “laid the foundations” which Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola subsequently built from. He can do the same at the 20-time English champions, whilst preserving their identity forged by Ferguson, as they move forward.

As a coach his approach is militaristic. Dennis Bergkamp, who played under him at Ajax, now coaching at the club, remembered a “sacred system”. But his approach is more than a system; it's an emphasis on collective responsibility (‘collectief’ is his favourite Dutch word) and mutual understanding, enabling the growth of the unit.

Attacking football is a moral obligation. His real obsession is domination of the ball (circulation football): passing endlessly until space is found to punish the opposition, a trait he picked up from his idol Rinus Michels.

Van Gaal takes great pride in his method has even published a book: Biografie & Visie. “I want my teams remembered for how they played,” he writes. He’s utilised varieties of every formation from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 to 3-3-1-3, yet his commitment for playing possession oriented attack-minded football has remained constant.

His doctrine been successfully adopted by Guardiola, who described his revolutionary 1995 European Cup winning Ajax side – dubbed “football Utopia” by former Real Madrid manager Jorge Valdano – as ‘a reference’.

Marcelo Bielsa is another staunch admirer. “I’m a big fan of his,” he confessed. “His philosophy when executed properly, is winning football, and is great for the fans, which is what we should all aspire to accomplish.” José Mourinho credits the Dutchmen in shaping his own philosophy: “He taught me the trade.”

Another plus for United fans is that he will safeguard the club’s tradition of promoting youngsters. His knack of getting the best out of players, regardless of ability, places him above most of his contemporaries. He spotted the potential of Thomas Müller and handed professional debuts to teenagers Clarence Seedorf, David Alaba and Andrés Iniesta, as well as successfully converting Bastian Schweinsteiger into a defensive midfielder.

“He’s probably the most important and the best coach I ever had,” Ajax manager Frank de Boer, his protégé, told L’Equipe on the eve of the Oranje’s World Cup semi-final against Brazil in 1998. Fifteen years on and the answer remains the same.

Xavi, who was brought through from La Masia by Van Gaal, once described him as a father figure. “I owe much to him. Sometimes he even preferred me over Guardiola, and I was only 18. That’s quite a bit. Van Gaal is a formidable guy.” He sure is.

Giggs: Delighted I get to stay at United

Posted: 19 May 2014 06:37 AM PDT

Ryan Giggs was pictured in Holland yesterday, ahead of the friendly between the Dutch national team and Ecuador, which suggested that our most decorated player had been offered a role by our new manager, Louis van Gaal.

Today, whilst announcing the appointment of Van Gaal, the club have also confirmed that Giggs will be our assistant manager.

“I am thrilled to have the chance to serve as assistant manager,” he said. “Louis van Gaal is a world-class coach and I know I will learn a lot about coaching from being able to observe and contribute at such close quarters. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life and I’m delighted to be able to continue that relationship in such a key role.”

Ed Woodward has also revealed how pleased he is that Giggsy will be staying at the club.

“I’m delighted that Louis has chosen Ryan as his assistant,” he said. “Ryan’s association with the club spans over two decades and his knowledge and stature will be of great use to Louis. In addition, this is a fantastic opportunity for Ryan to learn his trade alongside a world-class manager whose attacking instincts and belief in youth are tailor-made for Manchester United."

VIDEO: Captain’s Log

Posted: 19 May 2014 01:00 AM PDT

I had this on VHS when I was a kid and with all the focus on Steve Bruce at the weekend I was reminded of it. If you haven’t seen it, well worth watching, and if you have, it’s well worth watching again.

Steve Bruce, Captain’s Log.
