£24m defender set for United move Posted: 28 May 2014 06:30 AM PDT
The 29-year-old defender was instrumental in Atletico Madrid’s phenomenal season and even though he couldn’t prevent Diego Simeone’s men from falling to a 4-1 defeat in Saturday’s European Cup final against city rivals Real Madrid, the Brazilian has emerged as one of the best defenders in Europe over the last couple of seasons.
Miranda moved to Atletico Madrid in 2011 after leaving Sao Paulo behind and has gone on to win a trophy in each of three seasons he’s spent with the Colchoneros, lifting the Europa League in 2012 as Atletico Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao, before scoring the winner in last season’s Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. Spanish newspaper AS claimed earlier today that United had agreed a deal with Atletico and that they’ll offer the defender a four-year deal in the hope of luring him to Old Trafford, the first signing in what United fans hope will be a very busy summer for the club, as the Van Gaal’s revolution begins to take shape. The Atletico Madrid defender made 52 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish capital outfit this season, scoring four goals, and with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic no longer at Old Trafford and Mats Hummels seemingly unwilling to leave Dortmund, the 29-year-old could be the first reinforcements for United’s back four.
