United players in for a shock under “control freak” Posted: 19 May 2014 01:38 AM PDT
Van Gaal should be formally unveiled as United’s new manager this week but his reputation for demanding total control over his players and for being strict and hardworking almost to the point of being obsessed have preceded him to Britain and might spell news for some of the players who have been stealing a living at the club.
The Holland manager has been branded as a “control freak” and, much like Sir Alex Ferguson, he demands to know every detail of his players’ personal lives and Van der Kraan told talkSPORT the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will bring the same attitude to Old Trafford. "I don't think Wayne Rooney will be able to drink half a lager anywhere around Manchester without Van Gaal knowing, because he'd have to report what time he'd be in bed at night on his laptop. "He'd have to let him know whether he had spaghetti or chips for dinner, and if he had chips Van Gaal will be ready to meet him the next morning. "It sounds funny, but all the Dutch players in the international side are having to do this now in the build-up to the World Cup. "It's almost like they have a daily blog, they have to report how they live. For Van Gaal it's a very good guideline to see if he's dealing with the right professionals. “He's a very committed professional and he expects the same from his players." United endured a shambolic season, with David Moyes’ tenure delivering catastrophic results on and off the pitch and Van Gaal’s arrival could prove to be a shock for many players who have been passengers for too long. Van Gaal might come across an extremely strict and demanding manager, but Van der Kraan believes the Dutchman’s record speaks volume for his ability to build strong relationships with his players. "He does seem to protect his players but they do not have to fear him. "He has that aura that the players actually do love him.” |

Wayne Rooney was widely expected to replace Nemanja Vidic as captain next season, particularly after Moyes described him as the perfect man to lead the team – and to trouser £300,000-a-week – but it seems as Van Gaal has other ideas and could instal Robin Van Persie as his on-pitch lieutenant.
“He is my captain," Van Gaal said of Van Persie, who scored an absolute stunner in Holland’s friendly against Ecuador on Saturday night. "He is my top scorer in the 1½ years that he has played under me. He became all-time top scorer of the Dutch team, he plays superb football and even coming back from a bad injury, he scores a fantastic, unbelievable goal.
"I was happy with his performance, but he is also a fantastic captain. I think you always make a player captain when you have the same morals and philosophy.
“Not only about football and tactics and what is happening on the pitch but about life. I think that's very important and I believe that Van Persie and Van Gaal share the same philosophy." Van Persie, meanwhile, admitted that while it will be tough not to play in Europe next season he remains confident about United’s chances of returning to the top. "I followed everything from a distance, as the club had allowed me to do my rehab in Holland," said RVP. "It was good to have some distance because it has been a tough year. "For the first time in my career, I won't be playing in Europe. "It was a huge difference between this season and the last one, but it's our job to switch a button now. Everything is going to be all right with the club."
