Pochettino: A new Saints project has to start Posted: 11 May 2014 11:40 AM PDT Southampton concluded their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday and the Argentinian expects talks to happen quickly to plan their next steps. It caps a five-year period that has seen Southampton rise from League One football to a top-half finish in the Premier League and pushing for European places in the top flight. Pochettino has been linked with a move away from the club during the close-season with Tottenham reported to be interested in his services, but he expects to be involved in discussions on how the club move forward. "I still have one more year on my contract left, it is normal rumours start cropping up regarding myself and the players," Pochettino said. "We are coming to the end of a five-year project. "We've achieved what we wanted as this project, now a new project has to start. "This club deserves to begin a new project, the board have to decide how that happens, whether it's a two, three or five year project, we'll see. "Tomorrow we will sit down and talk and decide everything." Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, who have also attracted interest, were both substituted in the second-half against United however Pochettino insisted neither decision was made to enable the players to thank the fans before departing. "I took Adam off because I thought he was tired, it was mainly a tactical decision," he added. "And Luke Shaw came off because he had cramp so there wasn't anything behind those decisions." Giggs expects Man United decisions next week Posted: 11 May 2014 10:58 AM PDT Giggs finished his four-game spell in interim charge with a 1-1 draw against Southampton at St Mary's, but he is unsure what the next steps will be for him or the club. United were disappointing in the first half on Sunday and it took the introduction of Michael Carrick at half-time to spark them into life - Juan Mata rescuing a point with a superb free-kick. The result sees United finish seventh in the Premier League - missing out on UEFA Europa League football - and changes are expected at Old Trafford ahead of the new campaign, both in the dugout and on the pitch. Giggs has been linked with a role as part of the new manager's staff next season, but he insisted that no decision had been made on the next move in his career. "It's been an experience, there have been more ups than downs but I've enjoyed it," said the 40-year-old."I will decide within the next week (what to do), I think the managerial situation will be sorted in the next week, and on my own position I need to think about that and decide what I'm going to do. "It's whether to play on as a player or not, if I stay on in the staff what position that's going to be or whether take a year out from football. "These are probably the options so these are the decisions I've got to make. "All options are open to me, I'll look at everything. I might have to do it quick if a new manager is appointed." Whoever takes over at Old Trafford - and Louis van Gaal remains the overwhelming favourite - they will not have to worry about European competition, but Giggs believes that could benefit United in their rebuilding process. "I'm quite a positive person, hopefully it (not being in Europe) will help us in our league form and we can have good cup runs, which we didn't this year," added the Welshman. "We're a club that want to win things. This year's been frustrating, it's not happened but we always try to come back stronger. "We'll have a new manager and I'm sure new players coming in and improving the team so there's a lot to look forward to." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Premier League: Southampton 1 Man United 1 Posted: 11 May 2014 09:05 AM PDT United required a victory in the final game of the Premier League campaign and defeat for Tottenham against Aston Villa to steal sixth spot, but results transpired against Ryan Giggs' men. Tottenham's win over Villa coupled with a share of the spoils at St Mary's Stadium means United miss out on Europe having played in continental competition for the past 23 seasons. Juan Mata levelled for the visitors early in the second half with a sumptuous free-kick that gave Artur Boruc absolutely no chance in the Southampton goal after Rickie Lambert had broken the deadlock after 28 minutes. Both sides pushed for a winner and were guilty of missing chances to seal all three points. The draw, combined with Tottenham's win over Villa, sees United finish the campaign in seventh, while Southampton are one position behind them. The hosts, who named three potential FIFA World Cup hopefuls for the watching England coach Roy Hodgson to monitor from the stands, started the game with more attacking intent, but failed to test David De Gea. Victor Wanyama was first to threaten the United goal with a low strike in the 10th minute and even Adam Lallana's flick in front of the Spanish goalkeeper was not able to find the back of the net. Luke Shaw and Lallana both saw good chances wasted before Southampton took the lead just before the half-hour mark through Lambert, although there was controversy surrounding the goal. An elbow from Lambert in the build-up left Nemanja Vidic on the floor, but play was allowed to continue and the burly forward emphatically fired past De Gea from close range after being played in by Steven Davis' neat pass. United's players surrounded Mike Dean to bemoan the decision, but the goal stood, while Vidic – making his final appearance before joining Serie A giants Inter - received treatment on a bleeding nose. The visitors, who left Tuesday's hero James Wilson out of their squad, only created their first sight of goal in the 34th minute as Chris Smalling met a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area, but he skewed his low shot wide without testing Boruc. Giggs' decision to introduce Michael Carrick at half-time had an immediate impact for the visitors as it released Mata into a more creative role. And, in the 54th minute, the Spaniard curled a glorious free-kick over the Southampton wall and into the top corner to bring United level. United's second-half revival continued and just after the hour they should have been ahead through Darren Fletcher. After neat build-up on the right, Smalling delivered a perfect cross to the back post where the midfielder was able to escape the attentions of Davis, but the Scot placed his free header wide from seven yards. Danny Welbeck came close to putting United ahead in the closing minutes, but was denied by Boruc, while Southampton struggled to create any chances of note as their season ended with a comfortable display. With nine minutes remaining, Hodgson left his seat in the stands having seen his potential England players perform well and all come through the game without injury, with Lallana and Shaw both substituted to standing ovations. Pjanic extends Roma contract until 2018 Posted: 11 May 2014 07:57 AM PDT The Bosnia-Herzegovina international has played a pivotal role in Roma's return to prominence in Serie A this term, missing just two league games as Rudi Garcia's side have looked to keep pace with Juventus. Though their mission has ultimately proved unsuccessful, the capital club have a return to the UEFA Champions League to prepare for after a two-year absence. Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have been credited with interest in the 24-year-old, whose deal had been set to expire at the end of next season. But he has committed his future to the Olimpico, ensuring he will be free to take part in the FIFA World Cup with no doubts over his future. A Roma statement read: "AS Roma wish to announce that an agreement has been reached with Miralem Pjanic for the extension of his current contract, which was was due to expire on June 30, 2015. "The new agreement is for four years, with an expiration date of June 30, 2018." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Welbeck will not be sold, insists boss Giggs Posted: 11 May 2014 03:48 AM PDT The England forward has scored 10 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions this season, but was reportedly considering his future earlier in the campaign after being regularly utilised on the wing by former boss David Moyes. However, Giggs believes the Old Trafford youth product will remain at the club for the forseeable future. "We won't be selling him," Giggs is quoted as saying by Sky Sports. "We showed the other night (3-1 victory over Hull City) that bringing young players through is an important part of the club's culture and history. "We wouldn't like to lose someone like Danny because he has done that, he has been here since eight or nine. So we want to keep him." Louis van Gaal is the favourite to replace Moyes on a permanent basis, and Giggs believes whoever takes over will benefit from keeping United legends Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt on his coaching staff. "It's a decision for the new manager and something he definitely has to consider," he added. "I would say there are more plus points than minus points with what the lads bring. "They know the culture, the history and the way the club is run. All that can definitely be a plus." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
