Man United, Buccaneers owner Glazer dies Posted: 28 May 2014 01:25 PM PDT The Rochester-born businessman purchased the NFL franchise in 1995 and helped the Buccaneers to a first Super Bowl championship in the 2002 season. A decade later he purchased a controlling stake in the Premier League club - with United winning five league titles as well as the UEFA Champions League under his guidance. Glazer's death was confirmed by the Buccaneers on Wednesday, with the franchise also stating his wife Linda and their six children - who are board members at Old Trafford - would continue to run affairs at Raymond James Stadium. A statement on their official website read: "The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are saddened to announce the passing of owner/president Malcolm Glazer earlier this morning at the age of 85. "A dynamic business leader, Glazer helped mould the Buccaneers into a model franchise and one respected league-wide. "Known among his league peers as a pioneering thinker, Glazer infused his team and employees with the determination and dedication to be the best in the NFL. "Glazer's commitment to building a championship organization has provided the foundation for continued success, on and off the field." De Gea: Give Costa time to prove his fitness Posted: 28 May 2014 09:25 AM PDT The Manchester United shot-stopper was included in Vicente del Bosque's provisional 30-man squad for the FIFA World Cup earlier this month. The party must be cut to 23 by June 2 and Costa's race against time is the subject of much interest. The Atletico Madrid forward has battled hamstring problems recently and broke down inside the first 10 minutes of Saturday's UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid. De Gea hailed Costa's rise in the 2013-14 season and said the forward, who is crucial to Spain's hopes, should be given time to prove his fitness. "He is important for the team. I think we should wait," De Gea is quoted as saying in AS. "I met him several years ago. He's exploded this year and he makes a difference. "He's had an impressive year and now we have to wait. We want him to be 100 per cent." De Gea is yet to make his Spain debut and is behind Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina in the pecking order. But the 23-year-old is hoping to make his maiden appearance in pre-tournament friendlies against Bolivia and El Salvador. "I want to debut," he added. "I know the level of our goalkeepers is high and there are players of many levels. "I'm trying to make the most of my opportunity and hopefully I can. "There is a lot of speculation about who will go to Brazil and who won't. It's to be expected." Spain will play the Netherlands – the side they beat in the 2010 World Cup final – Chile and Australia in a tough Group B in Brazil. Perez: United wanted Ancelotti ahead of Moyes Posted: 27 May 2014 11:31 PM PDT Speaking on Spanish radio on Tuesday, Perez revealed former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had approached Ancelotti about taking over at Old Trafford but the Italian coach had already agreed to join Real. According to Perez, Ferguson then chose Moyes to replace him with the younger Scotsman failing to see out the season, as he was sacked in April. Ancelotti signed for Real in June of last year and in his maiden season with the Spanish capital club he led them to Copa del Rey glory before helping them win their unprecedented 10th European Cup/UEFA Champions League title last week. "Manchester United wanted him last year," Perez told COPE. "He told me that Ferguson asked him to be his replacement. "Possibly United wanted him this year (as well) but I don't know. I can only assure you that they wanted him last year." While the Spanish media had claimed at points during last season that Ancelotti would lose his job having failed to win La Liga, Perez denied the Champions League had saved the Italian. "No. I have read that but the season was already good" Real's president said. "Winning is always better and can consolidate complicated situations but it was not our case. "We have a project that I just started with a new coach. We will continue to improve but we need time and stability." |
