Hodgson backs Rooney for starring role in Brazil

The Manchester United forward has failed to make his mark at a major tournament with England since UEFA Euro 2004, but heads to Brazil without any injury concerns or suspensions. And Hodgson understands that Rooney will be under pressure to produce a career-defining display on the international stage. "I'm sure it must be the same for Hollywood film stars," he is quoted as saying by the English media."I'm sure you make your first film and nobody knows much about you and you get some good reviews - but one day you're going to be Al Pacino, you're going to be Jack Nicholson. "And suddenly - then you've got to make a f*****g good film!" Rooney has regularly carried the hopes of a nation on his back, but Hodgson believes a strong supporting cast could help ease the burden this time around. "I'd like to think the squad we've picked is a very good one, with lots of exciting players and Wayne could benefit from having those around him," he added. "He won't have to shoulder the total burden of goalscoring and goal-making that he has at previous tournaments. "There are plenty of players out there for us who can score or make a goal so if I was Wayne Rooney, I'd be thinking 'right, this is looking good, I've got good players around me, this is a great opportunity for me'." England begin their World Cup campaign against Italy in Manus on June 14.

Keane: Class of 92 not must-have for Van Gaal

Posted: 18 May 2014 01:29 AM PDT

Interim boss Ryan Giggs has been assisted by class of '92 colleagues Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt since taking over from David Moyes last month, guiding the team to two victories from his four games in charge. Current Netherlands coach Van Gaal is the man widely reported to be in line to take up the job on a full-time basis, with Giggs likely to form part of his backroom staff, but Keane is unsure whether his former United team-mates would be of any benefit to the Dutchman. "It doesn't rock my boat," he is quoted as saying in the British press. "People go on about the old Liverpool boot-room and all this, but no it doesn't do anything for me. "If it guarantees success, I would go for it. But does it guarantee success? No. I don't fall for all that. "There have been coaches over the years at United when I was there - Jim Ryan had the United connection, Brian McClair had the United connection, Mick Phelan was there, and Brian Kidd. "It is good to have that, but I don't think it is a must-have - particularly if you think you have to have three or four of them because they came through the youth team together." Neville arrived at Old Trafford with Moyes, but remained at the club following the Scot's departure, and Keane feels the former Everton man should have considered his own position. "Moyes brought in Phil Neville and everybody said it was great," he added. "I would like to ask Phil what did he bring to the party; and, when Moyes left, why didn't Phil leave with him? "You would have to ask Phil. But I know what I would have done."

Schmeichel: Van Gaal will aim high at Man United

Posted: 17 May 2014 09:24 PM PDT

Van Gaal is expected to be unveiled as David Moyes' successor next week after United relinquished their league crown with a seventh-place finish this season. The outgoing Netherlands head coach will be tasked with bringing UEFA Champions League football back to Old Trafford with a top-four finish. However Schmeichel, who won the Premier League and Champions League amongst other titles during his eight-year spell at United, believes Van Gaal will be aiming higher. "The club needs a strong man to steer us back up,' the 50-year-old told the Daily Express. "We have finished seventh, so the top four is a good target to set yourself for next season. "But Van Gaal will not want to accept the top four - he will try and win." While Van Gaal is yet to be confirmed as United manager, it has not stopped talk of potential transfer targets, with the club expected to invest heavily during pre-season. Germany internationals Toni Kroos (Bayern Munich) and Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund) have been linked to United, while Luke Shaw (Southampton) is tipped to join the club as they bid to return to the summit. And Schmeichel has given the German pair his seal of approval, should they arrive in Manchester. "United have got (Phil) Jones, (Chris) Smalling and (Jonny) Evans but going by what the media are saying, Hummels is a target," the Dane said. "That's a good starting point to bring him in. He has good leadership skills and he is a fantastic defender. He's someone we've been looking at for a couple of years and he's been heavily connected with United."

Van Persie feeling fresh ahead of World Cup

Posted: 17 May 2014 04:51 AM PDT

The Dutch striker is set to captain his country in Brazil after a below-par season at United that saw them relinquish their Premier League title and fail to qualify for Europe for the first time in over 20 years. On a personal level, Van Persie struggled with injuries and was limited to 23 starts in all competitions as United endured a disastrous David Moyes era before parting company with the Scot in April after just 10 months in charge. However, Van Persie feels his limited game time in recent months due to a knee injury could prove a positive for the Netherlands in their World Cup quest. "I'm feeling good," he told The Guardian. "Mentally I'm fresh. If you play a full season you can be a little bit tired at the end of the season. But I'm fresh, the knee is fine as well so I'm looking forward to it. "I'm 100 per cent. It's just that I need a full game now. "We have three friendlies to play (and) my last game (for United) against Southampton was 67 minutes so hopefully I can play a bit more." Van Persie became the Netherlands' record goalscorer in October and will be a key player if Louis van Gaal's men are to progress out of a group that includes world champions Spain, Australia and Chile in Brazil.

Man United snap up youngster Milinkovic

Posted: 17 May 2014 02:47 AM PDT

The highly-rated prospect is believed to have been on trial at Old Trafford in recent weeks, with United confirming on Saturday that he has joined the club. Milinkovic is a Serbian Under-17 international and will remain with Vojvodina next season as United clearly look to the future in terms of goalkeeping options. Provided he can secure himself a first-team place at United, he would become the third Serb to play for the club following departing captain Nemanja Vidic, who will join Inter this close-season, and Zoran Tosic, now at CSKA Moscow. Vidic made 300 appearances during his eight-year spell, while Tosic made just five.
