Posted: 16 May 2014 06:14 PM PDT Dutch national boss Van Gaal is expected to be announced as David Moyes successor at Old Trafford, after the latters turbulent stint in charge ended just nine months after it started. Fowler hinted United were confused at the direction they were headed, after losing legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson (now aged 72), replacing him with Moyes (51) and then turning to Van Gaal (62). The former England international said he believes Van Gaal is too old to lead United. I dont know if Louis van Gaal is the right man for Man United. Hes had his time. It might sound silly but hes too old, Fowler told talkSPORT. You cant argue with his credentials and what he has achieved but they should have gone for a young, vibrant manager. Fowler said mainstay midfield general Ryan Giggs was fit to assume the full-time job, after taking the reins on an interim basis for four games after Moyes sacking. Giggs oversaw two wins, a draw and a loss, and Fowler said his one-time opponent should have been handed the long-term responsibility. They should have just given the job to Ryan. Its one of the biggest jobs in football but Giggs knows the club, he knows whats expected and everything about the club, he said. Im not saying that as a Liverpool fan who thinks, lets get the young manager in and hope that he fails. I want young British managers to do very well because its good for British football as a whole. You dont have the career hes had at Manchester United if youre a bit of a wimp. He knows what hes doing and they should have gone down that route. Van Gaal focused despite Man United links Posted: 16 May 2014 04:02 AM PDT The former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is reportedly on the verge of agreeing a deal to manage the Premier League club following David Moyes' departure in April. Van Gaal will leave his current post after the upcoming FIFA World Cup and the 62-year-old explained he is happy with how preparations for the competition are going. Despite plenty of British media interest around the country's training camp due to the United links and speculation Van Gaal has already targeted players to bring to United, he is only focused on his current role. "I have invested a lot of time in (the Netherlands squad), so you can imagine how very important (the World Cup) is for me and the players," he said. "I've been in football for 40 years. In three months I'm 63. So I can manage the situation. "You keep focused because of the training sessions, because of the team meetings and the tactical meetings. "And because of the passion of the players that play at the world championships. It is always the case that we want to be focused on the competition." Woodward promises United transfer activity Posted: 16 May 2014 12:54 AM PDT Woodward's appointment as CEO coincided with a woeful campaign for United as they relinquished their Premier League crown and missed out on European qualification. Having sacked Alex Ferguson's successor David Moyes after less than a year in charge, Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is expected to take the reins from interim boss Ryan Giggs following the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. And Woodward stated the club expect to be busy in the transfer market, having signed just two first-team players during Moyes' reign - Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata. "We are now focused on bringing in a new manager who will help Manchester United return to the top of English football and challenging in Europe," Woodward told New York Stock Exchange analysts. "We expect to make an announcement (on the new manager) in due course. "In the meantime, we continue to be active in the transfer market. The club's expectations - and you'll see this reflected in the transfer market and what we've recently done from a managerial perspective - our aim absolutely is to get back into the Champions League. "We will be active in the transfer market. The window is upon us and deals are 'being done' but not 'been done' in terms of the past tense so there's nothing announced. "It's really something you're just going to have to wait and see as we go through the window." Woodward confirmed on Thursday the club enjoyed a 60 per cent jump in third-quarter profits, thanks partly to a huge rise in broadcasting revenue this season. However, the club will miss out on more than £30 million due to their lack of European football next term, according to the United CEO. "Due to the relatively high broadcasting revenues in fiscal year 14, we estimate that the isolated impact on fiscal year 15 of not qualifying for European football will be in the mid 30 millions of pounds," he explained. Hamsik happy to commit to Napoli project Posted: 15 May 2014 08:30 PM PDT The Slovakia international struggled his way through the 2013-14 campaign, enduring a six-month goal drought that he only broke in their 5-2 win over Sampdoria on Sunday. Hamsik's season was derailed by a serious toe injury, and the 27-year-old said he wanted to repay the fans with another trophy after clinching the Coppa Italia with a 3-1 win over Fiorentina in the Rome final in May. "I thank the fans for the affection they have always shown me. These have been seven splendid years together and we will continue in future too. I want to repay the people for their faith," Hamsik told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. "I had the first serious injury of my career. These problems are always going to affect performance, but I want to give more to the team. "I am happy and proud to wear the captain's armband. I will never forget lifting the Coppa Italia trophy for the rest of my life. It made me so proud." Hamsik went on to call Napoli's UEFA Champions League group-stage exit 'fantastic', and is eyeing domestic glory at the Stadio San Paolo. "I have always said and will continue say I believe in this project and want to continue so I can win with Napoli," he said. "It was a great season and a fantastic Champions League campaign, while we must improve in Serie A. I've been here for seven years, the growth process continues and we hope to do even better. "We really want to win the Scudetto and the club will improve the squad so that we can reach this objective." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
