Van Gaal arrival would ensure van Persie stay

Van Persies future at Old Trafford has been the subject of speculation over the course of the season after David Moyes replaced long-serving manager Sir Alex Ferguson in May. Moyes position is also under question following a trophy-less campaign, which has United on the verge of missing out on the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 19 years. Netherlands coach van Gaal is tipped to move to the Premier League after the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, with Tottenham and United rumoured destinations. And Hooijdonk, a former Dutch international, said van Gaals arrival in Manchester would be great for van Persie, who is battling to overcome a knee injury. Let me tell you one thing: if van Gaal becomes manager of Manchester United, van Persie will stay, the former Celtic striker said. Louis will bring in a number of top players and he will create a whole new team for United which, we can see, is necessary. Van Persie has endured an injury-interrupted second season at Old Trafford but he has still managed to score 11 goals in 18 Premier League appearances.

Baines: Martinez backs Everton style

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 06:17 PM PDT

Baines side are set to face old boss David Moyes at Goodison Park for the first time since the long-serving Toffees manager moved to Manchester United last year. Martinez, formerly of Swansea City and Wigan, has guided Everton within touching distance of a UEFA Champions League play-off spot, as they trail fourth-placed Arsenal by one point. Meanwhile, Moyes United are set for their worst finish since they were 13th in 1989-90, and their first non top-three placing since they were sixth in 1990-91. Baines said Martinez has been stringent in enforcing his game plan throughout the season. Thats been the big thing for me, the difference in the style of play, committing to that and not feeling like we have to adapt to the opposition, Baines said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo. The new manager has that confidence and belief in himself, in his own blueprint. And then in us. He tells us were not going to change, were just going to improve constantly and keep practising until we get to the level where we want to be. Stick to it, dont compromise, get better at it. He also spoke about the Champions League from the start. He didnt shy away from it. He came in and straight away, he set the bar high. We might have got away with a fairly ordinary season, the changeover with the new manager, the first season, a transitional season. But he didnt want to accept that. He wanted to improve on what wed done before, and weve done that. Baines said Martinez deploys a high defensive line that drives their positive agenda, with the club scoring 55 goals in 34 league appearances, and having a better goal difference than powerhouses Arsenal and Manchester United. Its very different. The full-backs at Everton are more advanced now. If Tim Howard has the ball, Ill be encouraged to be higher up the pitch and that creates more space for the midfielders. We can then start our play, building up from the back, Baines said. People will say theres a risk involved, and there are times, as a defender, when Im one side, Seamus is on the other, and Im thinking: I could do with being 15 to 20 yards further back here. But the idea is we stick to it, keep the ball and build. What the manager says is: Were going to get so good at what we do, were not going to compromise that, were going to stick to our principles and just get better because the top sides, the really top teams who have mastered this way, are the ones that gets success. Everton and Manchester United kick off in the late game on Sunday, after top-four rivals Arsenal are away at Hull City earlier.

Moyes holds Mata in high regard

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 07:17 AM PDT

Moyes, talking ahead of his first return to Everton on Sunday since moving to Old Trafford, believes the Spaniard has instantly proved his worth following his 37.1million January move from Chelsea. Mata has scored three goals in 11 Premier League appearances all coming in his last two outings - and his creativity has helped a team in transition under Moyes. I think its gone a little bit amiss but Mata has been terrific in his play, said the Scot. One thing I will say is its been missed how well Mata has done. Hes started to assist goals and score goals and has struck up an understanding with Wayne (Rooney) and with who hes played with. Juan has been a little bit overlooked. I could nearly say you (the media) dont want to talk about anything so positive, but hes been really good.

De Laurentiis insists Hamsik is not for sale

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 05:21 AM PDT

Amid reports the 26-year-old could be allowed to leave the Stadio SanPaolo at the end of the season, the outspoken president insisted that is not the case. Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with Hamsik, who has seen high-profile team-mates such as Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani leave in recent seasons, both to Paris Saint-Germain. De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss. "It's only journalists who put him on the market. "Marek has to come and tell me if he wants to go, but there is no more Neapolitan player than him. He has become Neapolitan and for me he is absolutely not for sale. "Of course if he came to me and asked to leave, then we'd have to discuss it." De Laurentiis also confirmed he was considering a follow-up move for Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons, after seeing a €17 million bid in January fail. "We will have time to think about it," he said. "I found an immediate agreement with Gonalons, but it was (Lyon president Jean-Michel) Aulas who dug his heels in and pushed things beyond every level. "Now I don't want to take revenge on Lyon, as that is not part of my nature. Everyone thinks they have gems and ask for outlandish prices."

Why Moyes return to Everton plays into Manchester Uniteds hands this weekend

Posted: 17 Apr 2014 04:42 AM PDT

In an otherwise depressing season for Manchester United, one reason for positivity is the club's away record. Somewhat surprisingly, David Moyes' side have earned more points on their travels than any other Premier League club in 2013/14. The problems have come in their home matches, where 10 other clubs have collected more points than United. The Reds haven't conceded a goal in their last five away matches, and after a goalless draw against Arsenal, have recorded a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, a 3-0 victory at West Brom, a 2-0 success at West Ham, and a 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United. Away from home, United appear unstoppable. There are probably two reasons for the disparity between their home and away form. The first is simple: pressure. United know they're enduring their worst campaign in the Premier League era, and while the supporters started the season fully in support of Moyes, there have understandably been murmurings of discontent in recent weeks. The recent plane banner at the Aston Villa match is precisely the sort of distraction United's players don't need when they're struggling at Old Trafford, and simply helps remind them of their current failings. In those kinds of situations it's often easier to play away, and this arguably suits Moyes' tactical approach too. United have been reactive this season, and are better when breaking swiftly rather than when attempting to unlock a packed defence, as they've so often failed to do at Old Trafford. They prefer it when opponents come onto them. Goodison's a good 'un A trip to Moyes' former club Everton, then, might be a decent fixture for United. Under Roberto Martinez, Everton play a more proactive style of football, dominating possession within the opposition half and playing with great width on both flanks by pushing the full-backs forward. This could be perfect for United's counter-attacks. The problem, however, is that Everton are extremely intelligent in the way they attack, and guard against counter-attacks methodically. Both Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman advance down the flanks, but Everton always retain a solid defensive square in the centre of the pitch. The roles of Gareth Barry and James McCarthy have been crucial in this approach this season – both are positionally disciplined, reliable with their use of the ball, and physical presences too. Against big sides, neither advance from their deep midfield roles, protecting Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka (or his replacement in recent weeks, the impressive youngster John Stones). In midweek, against a Crystal Palace side that sits very deep, Martinez went for a more attacking option – dropping McCarthy and instead using Ross Barkley in one of the deep midfield roles alongside Barry. On paper it made sense, but Everton were much more exposed defensively and conceded three goals at home – against the division's least prolific side going into the game. McCarthy and Barry will resume their partnership this weekend. Wide boys Overcoming this two-man barrier will be key to United's chances of defeating Everton this weekend. Whereas Moyes traditionally likes width, and switching play to the flanks quickly, in recent away games he hasn't played a pure winger like Antonio Valencia. Instead, his attacking band of three has been more fluid – having used Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj against Crystal Palace and West Brom, he's since moved Rooney up front - a result of Robin Van Persie's knee injury - and played Mata as the No.10, with Shinji Kagawa and Ashley Young either side. The balance from this trio has been very good – Kagawa appears to have a great natural relationship with Mata. The Japanese playmaker drifts inside to combine with Mata between the lines, which was particularly obvious against West Ham. Young, on the right, stays wider and stretches the play to prevent United become too congested in central positions, and provides crossing from the flank. Assuming Moyes continues with Kagawa, Mata and Young, United will need good performances from all three to thrive on the break against Everton. Mata and Kagawa will combine by taking up clever positions, both in front of and in advance of Barry and McCarthy, while Young will offer an alternative option and allow United to go around the Everton midfield duo – perhaps exploiting the space vacated by Baines's forward advances. Of course, all this depends on Everton playing positively and seeing plenty of the ball, allowing United the counter-attack opportunities they don't have at Old Trafford. In a sense, Moyes is returning home – but he'll be thankful his side are playing away.
