Ferdinand rules out retirement this year

Posted: 27 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

The 35-year-old defender has started just 10 Premier League matches this season, having battled a number of injuries following the appointment of David Moyes. However, Ferdinand was immediately recalled by interim manager Ryan Giggs - placed in charge after Moyes' sacking earlier this week - for Saturday's 4-0 victory over Norwich City. Ferdinand, whose contract expires at the end of the current campaign, has now outlined his desire to play on, although it remains to be seen whether he has a future at Old Trafford. "I'm going to continue playing," he told reporters. "Whether it's here, I don't know. But I hope so." United's struggles this season have been well documented, and Ferdinand hopes the appointment of Giggs can spark a positive end to what he feels has been an "embarrassing" campaign. "This here is a new chance and a new opportunity," he said. "That is no different now than what I have seen over the years with different teams and with England. "I haven't looked at the league table for ages because it is embarrassing.I don't want to see where we are. "That is down to us as players and we take responsibility for that as much as anyone else. We are where we are. "We have to take some form of responsibility and we do. We are not shirkers, we are not people who don't take responsibility. "I don't think you get to where many of us have got to in our careers and won what we have won without taking responsibility. This is no different."

Giggs hails Mata display after coming off bench

Posted: 27 Apr 2014 12:50 AM PDT

Mata had no place in Giggs' first XI as United interim boss on Saturday, but scored twice after replacing Danny Welbeck on the hour. The dominant Old Trafford win rounded off a week of strife for United, following David Moyes' sacking on Tuesday. A 41st-minute penalty from Wayne Rooney eased any nerves that may have set in after a scrappy first half. Rooney netted again from distance just three minutes into the second period, setting the stage for Mata to add gloss to the scoreline. And Giggs hailed the Spaniard's strength of character to put in a top performance when others may have become disheartened. When quizzed on the decision to drop Mata, Giggs admitted: "That was a tough one, as it was leaving so many players out. "He was disappointed and I expect that, it would be strange if he wasn't. But he just showed the class that he's got both as a player and as a professional. "He put on a half-hour masterclass and he was brilliant and I was really happy for him because it's not easy. "He's got a big price tag and to not start the game was disappointing for him and really pleased that he came on and made such an impact."

Kluivert backs Van Gaal for Man United role

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 11:30 PM PDT

Van Gaal, 62, is favourite to succeed David Moyes at Old Trafford following United's decision to axe the Scotsman on Tuesday after just 10 months in charge. Some reports have even suggested a deal has already been reached for the outgoing Netherlands coach to take charge of the Manchester club next season, though United have denied those claims. Kluivert is part of van Gaal's backroom staff with the Netherlands, working as an assistant ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, and the former Dutch international has thrown his support behind his countryman. "He would be absolutely the first pick of any club, especially top teams everywhere in the world," Kluivert told Talksport. Kluivert added: "He likes to let young players make their debut if ready for it. "The most important thing at the moment is I'm personally enjoying working with him and with the Dutch national team. We're going to the World Cup and hope to do well." Kluivert is tipped to follow van Gaal to Old Trafford, should the former Bayern Munich coach take the reins. And 37-year-old said it would be an 'honour' to work alongside van Gaal at club level. "Sure I would (do the job) wherever in the world because I love working with him," he said. "It doesn't matter what club it will be if he asks me to join him, I would be absolutely honoured to be on his side."

Keane regrets naming greatest Man United XI

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 08:46 PM PDT

The outspoken Irishman appeared in an ITV documentary in December alongside former nemesis and Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira. In the highly successful documentary, both players named their dream teams for their respective clubs. Peter Schmeichel, Paul Parker, Jaap Stam, Gary Pallister, Denis Irwin, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Ince, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy all made the side, along with Keane. But most surprising was the absence of club legends Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, something the Republic of Ireland assistant coach feels 'embarrassed' about. "That programme is not something I'm entirely happy that I've done," he said. "Whether people liked it or not, I felt uncomfortable picking my best XI. "I felt embarrassed leaving players out. I feel like I disrespected my team-mates. "And if you asked me to name my best XI now, well I wouldn't do it, first of all. But if I did, there'd probably be three or four changes." Keane's 12-year stay at Old Trafford came to an end in 2005 after an infamous falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The 42-year-old, however, has been linked with a return to the club as an assistant to Louis van Gaal, should he fill the void left by David Moyes.

Kolasinac: I have an offer from Man United

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 07:23 PM PDT

With captain Nemanja Vidic set for Inter, and Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra out of contract at season's end, United are in need of defensive reinforcements. Although United are without a manager following David Moyes' sacking on Tuesday, club officials have identified the 20-year-old Bosnian left back as a transfer target, along with Southampton young gun Luke Shaw. And Kolasinac, who is the latest Schalke starlet to be linked with a move away from the Bundesliga outfit, said he is considering an offer from the fallen Premier League champions. "Yes, I have offer from Manchester United," Kolasinac told Bosnian newspaper Dnevni Avaz. "But, I will not hurry with the decision (over my future). I have to see what Schalke think about it." The Bosnia-Herzegovina international has made 22 league appearances for third-placed Schalke this season as Jens Keller's men aim to secure automatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League. Kolasinac has quickly forged a reputation as one of the Bundesliga's most talented youngsters after making his debut for Schalke in a 2-0 win over Greuther Furth in September 2012. The German-born defender, who can also play in midfield, also made his international debut for Bosnia-Herzegovina in the nation's friendly against Argentina in November last year.

Adams demands bravery from Norwich players

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 01:42 PM PDT

Wayne Rooney and substitute Juan Mata both netted doubles as United began life after David Moyes with a resounding 4-0 win at Old Trafford on Saturday. The result marked a fifth successive loss for Norwich and a third since Adams took the reins in the wake of Chris Hughton's departure earlier this month. Norwich will drop into the relegation zone if there is a winner in Sunday's clash between Sunderland and Cardiff City, and they must negotiate daunting matches against Chelsea and Arsenal to preserve their top-flight status. "What we've got to make sure we do is give everything we've got in these last two games - two really tough games," Adams said. "We're probably going to have to take points in each of the games. Maybe, I'm not so sure. We'll have to have a look at the results but what we have to do is make sure we give it our best shot. "We've got to have a real good go at it and make sure we're maybe a little bit braver than we were today. "I talk about bravery in the sense of not just physically but getting on the ball and making things happen. I didn't think we did that today." Norwich imposed themselves on the contest effectively until Rooney opened the scoring with a 41st-minute penalty, after Steven Whittaker was adjudged to have fouled Danny Welbeck. And Rooney struck the decisive blow three minutes into the second period - a goal that Adams felt repeated frailties shown during last weekend's defeat to title-chasing Liverpool. "I thought for 40 minutes we were looking okay," he added. "We didn't cause United enough of a problem but what we did do was quell the crowd - we said how important that would be today, particularly in the first 10 or 15 minutes with what's happened here this week. "Our shape looked good. We looked solid and disciplined without overly causing United a problem. "I'm not so sure how much of a penalty it was. I think it was minimal contact, maybe on the arm. "But you're still in the game. The killer blow was the second goal. "We didn't really learn our lesson from the previous week. I think (Raheem) Sterling scored a goal from a similar distance (for Liverpool) and we've just got to get closer and stop a player like that getting a shot away. After that it was really tough."

Tempo the key for Giggs after debut victory

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 01:17 PM PDT

Taking the reins at the end of a turbulent week, in which David Moyes was sacked, the reigning champions eased to a 4-0 win over their relegation-threatened opponents at Old Trafford on Saturday. Wayne Rooney opened the scoring with a 41st-minute penalty and added a second three minutes after the break, before Juan Mata emerged from the substitutes' bench to notch a brace. Giggs' team, displaying six changes from the XI that brought down the curtain on Moyes' tenure in last weekend's abject defeat at Everton, endured struggles often seen during a lacklustre season before Rooney broke the deadlock. And they emerged revitalised following some well-placed words from the man in charge at half-time. "I picked a team that I thought could win the game," Giggs said. "To be honest with you, first half, the tempo probably wasn't as quick as I'd like it to be. "Maybe that was down to it being a big week, an emotional week, and the lads have trained hard. "It took a bit of time for us to get going but the goal came for us at the perfect time and, going in at 1-0, I just said 'quicken up the tempo and we'll be okay'." United's longest-serving player enjoyed a rapturous reception when he walked one onto the turf in his club suit, but admitted to struggling with some of the less-favourable aspects of a manager's job. "The reception was great," he said. "I've walked out of that tunnel so many times in big games and that's the best feeling I've had. "I felt 10-foot tall, so proud, and the fan's reaction was great - just like it has been all week. "Did I sleep last night? No, in a word. Leaving out players was the reason I didn't sleep. "It wasn't nice. They're team-mates of mine. I've never had to do it before and I'll continue not enjoying it. That has been the hardest part of this week." How long Giggs will stay in the role is a matter for debate. Reports on Saturday strongly linked Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal with the Old Trafford vacancy, while legendary former manager Alex Ferguson believes his one-time protege could be the best man to continue his legacy at Old Trafford. Nevertheless, Giggs is focused purely on the final three games of the season - starting with a game against Sunderland, another struggling side, next Saturday. "Honestly, I'm just looking forward to Sunderland now and that's it," he added. "That's what my focus and concentration is on. I'm not looking any further ahead than that."

Adams frustrated by second-half display

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 12:45 PM PDT

The Premier League's fourth-bottom club applied themselves well during the opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford on Saturday but fell behind to a 41st-minute penalty from Wayne Rooney. Adams questioned the decision that led to the spot kick, when Steven Whittaker brought down Danny Welbeck, but he offered no defence for his players after the break as Rooney added a second and substitute Juan Mata helped himself to a double to give interim United manager Ryan Giggs a near-perfect start. "I think we did really well in the first half and frustrated them but then five minutes before the break they get a penalty," Adams told Sky Sports. "There is minimal contact and that changes the game. "In the second half we were not good enough. We allowed Wayne Rooney too much time and space to get in a shot and we did the same last week against Liverpool when Raheem Sterling scored. "We had a go after that but it is difficult when you are 2-0 down away from home. "I felt we should have done better. We have got two games left and probably have to take points from them (to stay up)." The games in question for Norwich are against Chelsea and Arsenal, concluding a difficult run-in that leaves their top flight status in severe danger, as they sit one point above the drop zone. But Adams is determined that his squad's heads will not drop following a third loss in as many matches since former manager Chris Hughton's dismissal. "Overall, it wasn't good enough but we are still above the (relegation) line," he added. "What we can't do is beat ourselves up. We have to believe in ourselves and give everything we have got for the last two games."

Rooney and Mata give backing to Giggs

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 12:23 PM PDT

Rooney and Mata both scored twice - the latter having come off the bench during the second half - to end a turbulent week at Old Trafford on a positive note following David Moyes' sacking. Media reports have strongly linked Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal with the Old Trafford hotseat, but Rooney and Mata were quick to join United legend Alex Ferguson in praising Giggs' qualities. "For me it is a pleasure to play under his management," Mata told Sky Sports. "When I was a kid I remember him playing - he's a proper Man United boy. He was born almost in here. "For Wazza (Rooney), for me and for all the players it is a pleasure to be with him in the training ground every day but it is not down to us, the decision (on Moyes' long-term manager). "What we have to do now is enjoy with him until the end of the season." Rooney admitted seeing Giggs on the touchline was odd to comprehend, but is confident the Welshman will be a success in the role. He added: "It was a bit strange, having played with him for the last 10 years. "We all know Giggsy is an experienced player, he's been part of the coaching staff for the season - he's built to be a manager. "We can see that in how he has handled himself since he took over. It was fantastic to get out there and get the win for him. "Giggsy does have the credentials to be the next boss but that's down to the board, it's down to Giggsy. Who knows?"

Premier League: Man United 4 Norwich 0

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 11:33 AM PDT

Giggs is in interim charge of the reigning Premier League champions following David Moyes' sacking earlier this week. Taking to the touchline in a club suit, United's longest-serving player looked the part in a role that may only be temporary if pre-match speculation linking Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal with the Old Trafford hot-seat is to be believed. Alex Ferguson has backed Giggs to take on the job full-time, and the hosts displayed an early intensity of the kind associated with the Scot's reign. Much of United's first-half work lacked penetration, but Rooney scored a penalty four minutes before half-time and then doubled his tally three minutes after the break. Substitute Mata then struck twice to complete the scoring, leaving Old Trafford delighted and Norwich perilously placed just a point and a place above the relegation zone with two matches remaining. The two marquee signings of the Moyes era fared badly as Giggs made six changes. Mata dropped to the bench and Marouane Fellaini did not make the matchday 18. Giggs was afforded a predictably rapturous reception before recalled right winger Antonio Valencia was heavily involved as United sought a fast opening - although, unfortunately, the Ecuador international's early deliveries lacked quality. Jonny Howson had the ball in the net for Norwich after David De Gea had fumbled Ricky van Wolfswinkel's ninth-minute header, but the Dutch striker was rightly penalised for a push on Phil Jones. City's first testing moment came via the United left in the 14th minute when Martin Olsson failed to clear Patrice Evra's searching cross before Danny Welbeck reacted quickest to the loose ball, forcing John Ruddy to save smartly at his near post. United then found themselves in the all-too-familiar position of struggling for fluency but, after Ruddy had beaten a ball from Valencia out of the goalmouth, the Old Trafford crowd was on its feet in the 41st minute as Rooney converted from the spot. Jones' speculative pass found its way through a crowd of Norwich defenders to Welbeck, who was clumsily fouled by Steven Whittaker, and Rooney sent Ruddy the wrong way from the resulting penalty to record a 16th league goal of the season. Norwich were then left with a mountain to climb after the restart when Rooney was allowed to advance unchallenged towards the edge of the area. Despite losing his footing, the England forward's shot curled beyond Ruddy and into the bottom corner. Robert Snodgrass was Norwich's standout attacking threat and he tested De Gea with a 58th-minute free-kick, having drawn a foul from Nemanja Vidic, but the game was over as a contest five minutes later. Having saved impressively from Welbeck, Ruddy pushed the ball clear as Rooney sought a hat-trick, but Jones drilled the ball back into the box and Mata converted. The Spain international then nodded his second goal after Valencia had smashed a 73rd-minute volley across the area, and Old Trafford was able to bask in an optimism rarely felt over recent months. Substitute Johan Elmander and Bradley Johnson went close and Olsson saw a deflected drive strike the crossbar in a belated Norwich rally, but caretaker manager Neil Adams now faces the daunting prospect of games against Chelsea and Arsenal in which to salvage their top-flight status.

Saturday analysis: Giggs United find new verve, Clyne helps dent Everton hopes

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 11:30 AM PDT

Click the scorelines in the big red letters to visit our Stats Zone match centre and perform your own analysis. Man United 4-0 Norwich The Ryan Giggs era (which may only last for just over three weeks) certainly started with a bang. Although Manchester United also scored four times in their recent league wins over Aston Villa and Newcastle, there was something different this time around. For starters, the 11 shots they had on target was the most they'd had in a Premier League match since December 2011. Four of those on-target shots were from Wayne Rooney. At the other end, Nemanja Vidic was particularly impressive at keeping the Canaries at arm's length on the rare occasions they dared fly in his airpsace. The Serb, who had seemingly been frozen out by David Moyes ahead of his impending move to Inter, won all 12 of his aerial duels, completed 19 clearances, and made 5 interceptions. He also completed 90% of his passes. Southampton 2-0 Everton On a day when many eyes were on three of the full-backs on show - England rivals Luke Shaw and Leighton Baines, and the ever-improving Seamus Coleman - it was the other who was arguably man of the match. Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne showed both sides of his game as the Hampshire side frustrated their Champions League-chasing visitors. He made an impressive 9 tackles in the right-back zone, frustrating Gerard Deulofeu to the extent that the Spaniard switched wings with Stephen Naismith shortly before half-time. Clyne also got forward, coming inside and creating 2 goalscoring chances with short passes, and also providing the cross from which Coleman inadvertently headed past Tim Howard to put Southampton 2-0 in front. Could the former Crystal Palace man be the next Saint to work his way into England contention? The watching Roy Hodgson will surely have been impressed. If the lunchtime kick-off was one to remember to Clyne, it certainly wasn't for Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian struggled to leave his mark on the encounter, winning just 1 of his 5 aerial duels. He also only managed to find the target with 1 of his 4 attempts, that being a tame header straight at Artur Boruc. Stoke 0-1 Tottenham Despite just edging the possession in this match between two sides with little to play for, Stoke created disappointingly little of note in front of goal. The Potters did manage 17 shots over the course of the 90 minutes, but they never really troubled Hugo Lloris in the visitors' goal. They managed to completely spurn their very best openings, with Peter Odemwingie and Steven N'Zonzi both missing the target from close range. In fact, only 1 of their 8 shots from within the penalty area drew a save from Tottenham's French keeper, Marko Arnautovic firing straight at the former Lyon man as the game entered the dying stages. Their only other shots on target were both from range and both saved comfortably by Lloris. Mark Hughes will wonder how a team that scored seven goals in back-to-back wins over West Ham and Aston Villa a month ago could score just three more in the five games that followed. The Welshman has done well to develop Stoke's style of play, but creativity is still clearly an issue, and one he must look to address in the summer if the Potters are to continue their transformation from the league's ugly step-sisters. Swansea 4-1 Aston Villa When you're less incisive than famed faffers Swansea City, you know you have problems. Despite the Swans' comfortable win, Villa actually edged the possession (with 52.9%), yet that didn't help the visitors when it came to creating decent goalscoring opportunities. Paul Lambert's side mustered just 3 shots on target, struggling to find the kind of defence-splitting passes or moments of brilliance that Swansea were benefiting from at the other end. To sum it all up, Villa completed almost three times as many attacking-third passes as their hosts, yet scored three fewer goals. It could be a long and tense fortnight for everyone associated with the West Midlands club. We can't discuss this match without mentioning Jonjo Shelvey's long-range howitzer - each of Shelvey's last five Premier League goals have come from outside the box. Fulham 2-2 Hull Stoke and Aston Villa may have been wasteful in their attacking play, but Steve Bruce's Hull City were far more clinical - eventually. The FA Cup finalists looked to be on their way to a second successive defeat and shut-out, with Fulham battling their way into a two-goal lead in the early stages of the second half. Hull managed just 3 shots in the first 73 minutes of the match (to Fulham's 7), but scored twice from their 5 attempts in the last 20 minutes of play. This point - Hull's 37th of the season - should be enough to secure Premier League football at the KC Stadium for next season with two games to spare, and they certainly would've taken that at the start of the season. They owe a lot to their newly-recruited strike-force, and Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic were both in fine form at Craven Cottage - Long scoring with one of his 2 attempts, and Jelavic scoring with his 1 and only chance. West Brom 1-0 West Ham While West Brom are slowly moving closer to safety, West Ham's season seems to be coming to a shuddering halt. The Hammers have now lost four in a row, and haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last nine Premier League matches - the worst current run in any of England's four top divisions. They only conceded once this time around, but still lost thanks in part to some questionable finishing at the other end by Andy Carroll. Lallana coy on summer transfer rumours

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 07:47 AM PDT

The England international was in fine form as Everton lost 2-0 at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday - the result sealed by own goals from Antolin Alcaraz and Seamus Coleman. Southampton's captain has been tipped to star for his country at the FIFA World Cup, although his consistent performances have also attracted attention from Southampton's Premier League rivals. Manchester United have persistently been linked with a swoop for Lallana as well as Southampton's teenage left-back Luke Shaw. Les Reed, executive director at St Mary's, insisted on Friday that the club will not be forced to sell any of their leading players, but Lallana is remaining coy on where his future could lie come the end of the season. "I just want to enjoy my football," he told BT Sport. "That's when I'm at my happiest, when I'm playing well. "Playing in a great, youthful team like this I feel like one of the experienced players nowadays. "I just want to concentrate on the last two games of the season and we'll sit down in the summer and see what happens."

Man United fans chief claims Moyes thanks

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 06:45 AM PDT

Moyes was sacked as United manager on Tuesday, less than 12 months into a six-year contract, with the reigning Premier League champions languishing in seventh place in the table and unable to qualify for next year's UEFA Champions League. Club legend Ryan Giggs has since been appointed as interim manager at Old Trafford, taking charge of his first game against Norwich City on Saturday. In a brief statement via the League Managers' Association earlier this week, Moyes had thanked United fans for their support during his time in charge. And according toUnited We Stand fanzine editor Andy Mitten, he also received a text from Moyes late on Friday evening expressing gratitude to the club's followers. In a message posted on Twitter on Saturday, Mitten wrote: "Got a text from David Moyes last night: 'Andy. Would you please let it be known how much I appreciated the support I got from the real United fans. They were incredible. I am sorry I couldn't give them the results they are all used to. Thanks. D Moyes'." While Moyes himself has not spoken publicly other than via the LMA, there has been widespread praise for the dignified manner in which the Scot has dealt with his Old Trafford exit. Several fellow Premier League managers also had their say when asked about his departure ahead of the weekend's action, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger conceding that he was "sad" that Moyes had not been given more time.

Man United stay silent on Van Gaal reports

Posted: 26 Apr 2014 01:47 AM PDT

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claimed on Saturday that the experienced Van Gaal has come to an agreement with United, who are searching for a new manager after sacking Moyes on Tuesday. Ryan Giggs was appointed as interim manager of United ahead of this weekend's game with Norwich City, but Van Gaal is the strong favourite to take over on a permanent basis, having already revealed he will stand down as coach of the Netherlands after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Responding to speculation linking Van Gaal with the Old Trafford hotseat, a United spokesman said: "There is nothing to report. "We have not signed a new manager. When we have something to report, we will announce it." A UEFA Champions League winner with Ajax in 1995, Van Gaal has won domestic titles in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. The 62-year-old has previously expressed a desire to work in the Premier League and would bring a wealth of experience at the highest level.
