Beckenbauer, Van der Sar back Van Gaal for United

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 07:25 PM PDT

Van Gaal will quit his post as the Netherlands head coach after this years World Cup and has firmed as favourite to take over at Old Trafford, following the sacking of David Moyes this month. The 62-year-old Dutchman has won titles in the Eredivisie, La Liga and Bundesliga, while he led Ajax Amsterdam to success in the UEFA Champions League in 1995. Beckenbauer was president of Bayern Munich when the Bavarian club lured Van Gaal to Germany and believes the veteran coach would be perfect for United, as the Premier League outfit look to rebuild following Moyes disastrous tenure. He would be perfect for Man United because he is an internationally experienced coach and he understands English football, Beckenbauer told the Daily Mail. I dont know if its a rumour or if theyre really trying to sign him (Van Gaal) but if they agree with Louis I think it would be a good part of the future. He won a lot of titles so he is experienced and he is ambitious. He has the personality. He has everything. Van Gaal won the Bundesliga-DFB Pokal double with Bayern in the 2009/10 season but was sacked in April of the next campaign as the German giants slumped to third. But Beckenbauer remains convinced the Dutchman is one of the best coaches in the world, despite Van Gaals reputation for arrogance. If you ask him a stupid question then it can be that his answer is a bit arrogant but if you treat him with respect, then respect comes back to you, the 68-year-old German said. I like him. He was also very successful with Bayern Munich. In the end there was a little discussion about the way he was handling his job so thats why they went separate ways. But for me hes one of the best coaches in the world. Van der Sar, who won the Champions League and three Eredivisie titles with Van Gaal, before finishing his career at United, rates his compatriot ahead of other former bosses, such as Alex Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti. I will say more about Louis and United once his appointment is official, the former goalkeeper told the Mirror. But I have made it clear here before that Louis van Gaal is the best manager I have ever played for.

Ancelotti has no interest in Man United job

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 10:12 AM PDT

The Italian is currently among the favourites to fill the vacancy after Moyes last week paid the price for a disappointing season that has seen United fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League and meekly surrender the Premier League title. Ryan Giggs has taken on the role of interim manager at Old Trafford, but Ancelotti - preparing for Tuesday's second leg of a Champions League semi-final tie in which his side lead reigning champions Bayern Munich 1-0 - stressed that his long-term future is with Real. "I respect everyone," he said. "I haven't had contact with Manchester United. "I want to stay at Real Madrid for a long time. "It's strange to discuss my future in the middle of a Champions League semi-final." Ancelotti has previous experience of managing in the Premier League, having led Chelsea to a Premier League and FA Cup double in 2009-10.

Keane dismisses rumours of Man United role

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 07:44 AM PDT

Ryan Giggs was installed as interim manager after David Moyes departed the club last week, leading to widespread rumours about who will succeed the Scot on a long-term basis. Current Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has been touted as the favourite, with suggestions that Keane could rejoin United as the Dutchman's number two. However, Keane, who currently works alongside Republic of Ireland coach Martin O'Neill, distanced himself from the post in an interview with Today FMon Monday. "No, I don't think that way," he said. "In my quiet moments, I obviously want to go back into being a manager myself. "I was at a match on Friday night, I was at a match on Saturday and I am up in the stand thinking, 'I would love to have a team.' "And then I'll get back in my car and I spoke to Martin, and then I am thinking obviously I am delighted to be working with Martin and (goalkeeping coach) Seamus(McDonagh) and the other staff, so you have to be careful what you wish for. "I am just really appreciating the opportunity I have at the moment. What happens further down the road..." Keane fell out recently with former manager Alex Ferguson following comments made in the latter's autobiography and the United legend is unsure whether he can foresee a time when the two are back on speaking terms. "No, I am not sure. Probably not," he said. "But look, I have said that about other people. "Footballis a funny old game and you get clashes of personality sometimes, but it's something that's not on my mind at the moment, to be honest with you, whether it be good or bad."

Mata grateful to Moyes for Man United move

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 07:13 AM PDT

Moyes' 10-month tenure at Old Trafford proved to be a forgettable one, as United crumbled in their bid to retain the Premier League title and failed to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League. Mata - who was signed by Moyes for a club-record £37.1 million fee in the January transfer window - has openly thanked the former Everton manager for luring him to United from Chelsea. "I don't want to forget that, since the beginning of the week, David Moyes is no longer our manager," Mata wrote in his personal blog. "I wish him and his technical staff the best of luck in the future and I thank him for his continuous interest in me and his importance during my transfer to become a Manchester United player." Interim manager Ryan Giggs started his tenure with a 4-0 rout of lowly Norwich City on Saturday. Mata - who scored twice after coming off the bench against Norwich - is delighted with how the Welshman's managerial debut panned out and is happy to reward supporters who have endured a testing season. He added: "It was Ryan Giggs' first game as a manager after plenty of years of success on the pitch, and the truth is everything went well. "Our fans deserve that, indeed. "They deserve scores like this one because, in this tough season, they have gone home with a downcast face too many times."

Why Roma must act on their ambition to make Juve (and Europe) sweat next season

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 05:06 AM PDT

There is an image that sums up Roma's turnaround over the last year, and it came not after their mauling of Milan on Friday evening. Instead it was in the aftermath of their win at Fiorentina the previous weekend, when the players gathered in a circle and performed a mad jig to celebrate qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League. Goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis was chief reveler in the middle, but the man who had masterminded the team's rise from the ashes wasnowhere to be seen. Rudi Garcia was striding across the turf at the Artemio Franchi already planning for a home-straight chase of Juventus. Like a Roman general, he was not willing to let standards drop until the war was completely over. It was no wonder that the club's Player of the Year-elect Mehdi Benatia told Roma Channel that he would follow his coach into battle wherever he ordered. Roma's transformation from also-rans to title contenders must be one of the most incredible in Serie A history, and has been built around the understated coaching abilities of someone who had not even been the club's third choice; Laurent Blanc, Walter Mazzarri and Massimiliano Allegri had been approached, but all backed away. Daniele De Rossi confessed he needed to Google the new man in charge. That was back in July and the disillusioned midfielder, who had fallen out of favour under Zdenek Zeman, was a step away from joining Manchester United. Ten months later, however, he like the rest of his team-mates, is making history and enjoying the accolades with it. Friday's 2-0 win over Milan took Roma to a new club record of 85 points in a season; over the same period no other Giallorossi side has recorded 26 victories, kept 21 clean sheets and conceded just 19 goals (which makes them the meanest defence in Europe). These impressive statistics have been achieved despite Garcia's attacking style, which has liberated his flair players who now know the team has solid foundations. Breaking the chain It is a long way from Catenaccio (The Chain, a tactical system with a strong emphasis on defence). In fact, it's the breaking of the chain and an evolution in the Italian game. Garcia may jot down a 4-3-3 formation before kick-off, but that morphs into a 2-1-4-3 when Roma have possession, which against Milan was over their usual 30-minute average. The team advanced high up the pitch while De Rossi dropped back and the two central defenders – for most of the season Benatia and Leandro Castan, but in the last two matches Rafaeil Tolói –covered the runs of full-backs Douglas Maicon and Dodò. It means there are often seven players breaking forward to draw the opposition defence out of position. Roma's strategy is all about taking the initiative away from the opponents, but build-up play is never frantic and if the route to goal is blocked then the ball is played back across the halfway line to start the process all over again. At times it is also used draw the defence further up the pitch, although Milan refused to fall into that trap. Instead they were undone by one moment of brilliance and then exposed by a swift break where Francesco Totti's shot was parried by Christian Abbiati into Gervinho's path for a close-range finish. The real moment of magic was the opening goal, which highlighted why players can be rewarded by staying on their feet. Miralem Pjanic may have nutmegged Adil Rami before breezing past Sulley Muntari and Riccardo Montolivo, but he rode the first two challenges with only one thought in his mind: attack the heart of the defence. His reward was a goal that Garcia hailed as Maradona-esque in its execution, and, like the Argentine legend, Pjanic was all balance, quick-feet and confidence. It was certainly better than Mario Balotelli's solo break which ended up with the Milan striker tumbling to the ground, or worse still when Robinho came on as a late substitute and twice fell over in futile attempts to claim a foul. Thankfully the referee ignored the theatrics, and instead full attention should be given to the dazzling exploits of Pjanic, Gervinho, Adem Ljajic, Radja Nainggolan and Totti. In the past, the latter was schooled in the Italian art of winning a foul after the slightest of touches, but now the veteran star understands that with such talent around him he does not need to carry Roman hopes alone by any means necessary. Beefing up Roma are playing with a pace and style well above any other side in Italy, and it seems they are finding disciples of the new way forward in Fiorentina and Hellas Verona. The latter's 20-year-old forward Juan Iturbe has been linked with a switch to the capital, although Real Madrid are reportedly ready to cover the €15 million Porto are owed from his current loan deal plus another €10m for good measure. With a return to Europe secured, expectations will be even higher next season, but Garcia knows that without reinforcements he will not be able to eke out the desired quality from the same set of players on two fronts. He has already warned the club's hierarchy that his ambitions do not end here, and if Roma cannot match them there are plenty of suitors out there willing to woo him away from the Eternal City. He will want Pjanic to stay of course; the Bosnian's wonder goal will have onlyadded to his value, as will his appearance at the World Cup this summer. At 24 he still has the best years ahead of him, and offering the silky-skilled midfielder a contract worthy of his star billing would not only be an investment as a long-term replacement for Totti, but in the short term would appease Garcia and help entice new recruits. Roma only have to look at Juventus, where one man stands ahead of Garcia for the coach of the year award: Antonio Conte, who has masterminded the Old Lady back to the top of the Italian game. It took them three seasons to lay the foundations after their return from Serie B in 2006, and four to develop a new stadium. Now they are closing in on a third consecutive title. But compared to where Roma were this time last year, Garcia has the goods to launch a title challenge in a shorter period.

Giggs sure of United challenge next season

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 01:34 AM PDT

United have had a woeful campaign by their lofty standards, and have surrendered the Premier League crown with a whimper, currently sitting behind table-topping Liverpool by 20 points. That poor record led to the dismissal of David Moyes less than 12 months into his six-year contract last week with United stalwart Giggs named as interim manager, and he started his tenure with a 4-0 triumph over Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday. Reports suggest Giggs is an unlikely candidate for the role full-time, with Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal the hot favourite to take the reins, yet the Welshman is confident that whoever is in charge will have a team fully equipped to challenge for honours. Weve got everything in place to have a successful season next year. Weve certainly got the players, he said. Its going to be hard, obviously, because weve had a tough season and obviously the lads at Liverpool have improved and other teams around us have improved. It wont be easy, but Im confident. When asked if United were on the decline, Giggs responded: We won the league last year. The year before we lost it on goal difference, the year before that we won it. Where did Liverpool come last year, seventh? Who would have said they would be where they are this year, so a lot can change.
