Rio: “United have been embarrassing”

Posted: 28 Mar 2014 04:38 AM PDT

Rio FerdinandRio Ferdinand has admitted that he’s scared of leaving the house and running the risk of having to confront disgruntled United fans and the 35-year-old centre-back has described the club’s current season as “embarrassing”.

A protest, planned by a group of fans ahead of tomorrow’s game against Aston Villa, will see a small aircraft carrying a banner reading “Wrong One – Moyes Out” flying above Old Trafford before kick-off tomorrow, while Ferdinand is the first senior figure to speak out about United’s dismal campaign.

“It’s embarrassing – it becomes a personal insult. I don’t want to go out when the game is finished and you even stop watching TV,” Rio said in an interview with BT Sport. “I don’t want to take my kids to school. I don’t want to walk on the school path and think I’m hearing things or seeing people look at me because we lost a game.

“I don’t want to fill my car up with petrol or go to the shops,” he continued. “It gets personal with everyone looking at you and talking about the results and the form and stuff. You don’t want to live like that. You want to live freely and comfortably. You don’t want to see other people lifting titles. That’s what we’re used to. That’s what we want. That’s what we train for and work for.”

“We’ve got no divine right – don’t get me wrong – you’ve got to earn that right. And this season we simply haven’t done that.”

Moyes’ future up in the air?

rp_stoke-200x2001-200x2001-200x200-200x200.jpg“These are wonderful times to be a Manchester United fan, particularly as the Reds look to clinch their 20th title when Aston Villa visit Old Trafford tomorrow.” No, I haven’t lost my marbles – not all of them anyway – I simply thought that nothing would illustrate how far we’ve fallen this season as the different circumstances surrounding this fixture eight months ago, hence the choice to recycle a line from last season.

In April, Aston Villa were nothing more than a sparring partner for United, a side that could have delayed our 20th title but chose not to and were blown away in just over 30 minutes, as United rubber stamped their league triumph.

Tomorrow, Villa could well be the latest side to benefit from United’s dismal campaign and will face a club that is, by all accounts, on the verge of being officially in turmoil. Whereas last season Villa fans and players had to look on as scarves and flags made their way onto the pitch as United celebrated the title, tomorrow a different kind of treat will be in store for them, with a plane carrying a banner “Wrong One – Moyes Out” set to fly above Old Trafford just before kick-off.

David Moyes is indeed the “wrong one”, but attaching a banner demanding he’s sacked to a small aircraft is not going to solve anything and, more worryingly, will make us look incredibly small time. On Tuesday, Moyes said we should aspire to be like City, but he shouldn’t have bothered: some of our fans have already bridged the gap, it seems.

To each their own anyway, but while anything that goes against the self-appointed fans’ spokesman’s will – for those who ignore his identity, he’s the man responsible for “The Chosen One” banner – should be praised, this initiative could really make us all look like a bunch of clowns – incidentally, a feeling we’ve become accustomed to this season.

Away from the skies, United have a game of football to deal with and one that they must win, if nothing else to give themselves a little breathing space ahead of judgement day on Tuesday, when Bayern are likely to hammer the final nail in Moyes’ coffin with a mixture of Catalan flair and German efficiency.

After the second derby day shellacking of the season, Moyes can either rest some of his players ahead of Tuesday or he can stick with them, hoping they’ll offer a reaction of sorts.

Juan Mata – the once brilliant playmaker who by now must surely be wondering what he got himself into when signing for United – is cup-tied and therefore likely to start tomorrow, with Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young deployed alongside him behind Wayne Rooney, the only man who looked to care a bit during the derby.

It’d be sensible to field Marouane Fellaini and Tom Cleverley tomorrow, if nothing else to spare them an almighty embarrassment against Bayern, though such a dynamic duo in midfield would probably ruin everyone’s weekend by 1pm tomorrow. Though he didn’t cover himself in glory, Cleverley was decent on Tuesday night, but he was played completely out of position, while Fellaini was his usual useless self.

Nemanja Vidic returns from suspension and will take his place in the back four, while Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are still out and will miss the opportunity of seeing Christian Benteke running riot.

United swept Villa aside in December and given Villa’s erratic form this season the Reds remain favourite ahead of tomorrow, but this season has taught us to expect the unexpected and it wouldn’t be overly surprising to see United stumble to another poor result tomorrow.

One thing is certain: should we beat Villa, talking about having turned a corner would be as ridiculous as flying a banner over Old Trafford.

The Chosen One

rp_1206958-25205331-640-360-200x200.jpgFirst off, let me start by introducing myself as Greg, a United fan who never believed David Moyes was the right man for the job when the news broke almost 12 months ago. Despite having ten solid years at Everton, one thing was missing. A trophy.

Now, it'd be easy to raise the argument that he was dealing with peanuts for a budget at Everton, but on more than one occasion during his tenure, he could (and probably should) have lifted a trophy only to choke on the big stage.

However, all that being said, he was Sir Alex Ferguson's man. 'The Chosen One' they proclaimed. Sir Alex begged us, all as one, on the pitch after lifting yet another title, to support the new manager. When Sir Alex says something: you listen, you respect and you do. But, goodness me, no one could ever have imagined it would be this bad, could they?

So now the fans have to ask themselves: Where does that support for the manager end? When is the time to say 'okay, we've had enough now'?

For some it was after week one. I don't think that was an incredible intuition, more just a fear of what might be.

For most though, it came on Tuesday night, after yet another capitulation. The most frightening aspect of it all for me though was that, in terms of this season, it wasn't actually that bad, in terms of a performance. I know that might surprise some of you to read that and, believe me, it doesn't fill me with joy either, but compare Tuesday to last Sunday against Liverpool. The performance levels were miles apart. They had to be. Had we played the same way, it could have been six or seven.

All Tuesday proved is that we are miles off the pace.

Now here comes the important part that the board must seriously look at. Is it a question of poor management or simply the personnel on the field.

I've heard the argument being made all season that this squad were not so long ago champions. However, I'm in no doubt that it was also the weakest squad Sir Alex ever presided over. The issue is that the others have vastly improved their squads, whilst we've stagnated. I truly believe David Moyes was let down by the board last summer and it leads me to question as to whether that's why their patience seems to be unbreakable at the moment.

However, for the good of balancing things up, he has managed to spend upwards of £60 million on two players and we've gone backwards.

I truly believe that Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini (yes even him) will be good Manchester United players. I think they both have the ability to exceed at United. Why? Because they have proven pedigree in this league and we all know it. I certainly remember dreading facing Everton at Goodison Park because Fellaini was a nightmare for our lacklustre midfield. A lot have jumped on the bandwagon of slating Fellaini, but I'll stick my neck out and say he'll come good eventually.

Let's be honest, no one has covered themselves in glory this year. Had we just signed Robin van Persie summer past for £25 million and watched the performances we've seen this campaign, are you saying we'd be happy? I don't honestly believe that we would have been.

However, there were plenty of players at the start of the season that, in my eyes, had already shown they weren't good enough. I understand why Moyes chose to stick by them, apart from anything else, you can't sell players when you can't get the faces to replace them.

I do think that David Moyes is ready to be ruthless this summer (if he gets the chance to), he has to be. We know Vidic is going. I can't see Ferdinand or Evra staying (it's probably time we said farewell to them both anyway). Nani, Anderson (permanently), Young, Cleverley, Hernandez and Smalling will all be lucky to survive the cull too.

It's all very well ridding the club of players that can't perhaps cut it, but there is no doubt that we possess some of the best players around at Old Trafford. This is where my problem lies with Moyes. He doesn't quite seem to know how to manage, prepare or motivate any of them. He got more out of his Everton squad last season than he has out of United's group of players this year and that, to me, is very telling.

David Moyes is more excited about the summer holidays than British schoolchildren right now. He is crawling his way to the finish line that is the end of the season and, with every further embarrassment, more and more fans are standing in his way, determined that he doesn't smell the freshly cut summer grass as United manager.

So that's the only way I see him holding onto the hot seat. Avoid further embarrassment. There is only one problem with that plan: Bayern Munich.

If we capitulate, and that's a very real possibility, Moyes might just not see this one out. Bayern beat the, so called, invincible Barcelona 7-0 over two legs last year. They are better this year. What are they going to do to us?

I'll leave you with one question:

Did you ever think there would come a day where you were walking to Old Trafford, or tuning into the game on TV, wondering how many we'll lose by tonight?

Greg.
