CONFIRMED: Rooney signs new deal Posted: 21 Feb 2014 12:06 PM PST Manchester United have confirmed that Wayne Rooney has extended his contract with the club. “I am made up to be staying at United,” he said. “In August I will have been at the club for 10 years and during that time I have played with some fantastic players and won everything that I hoped I would when I first signed. I now have the chance as one of the club’s senior players to help the younger players coming through and to be a part of another great United team. The fans have always been a huge part of this club and the support they have given me since my debut against Fenerbahce has been amazing. I am very grateful to all United fans around the world for their continued support. I am really excited to be a part of the club’s future and want to thank David Moyes and Ed Woodward for their belief and support in me. I am convinced that this is the start of another successful chapter in Manchester United’s history.” David Moyes is delighted that the striker has extended his deal, with Rooney also agreeing an ambassadorial role after he leaves the club. “Wayne has been the best player in England since I put him into the Everton first team in 2003,” he said. “Since becoming United manager in July last year, I have enjoyed working with him and seeing just how he has developed his incredible talent. With his ability, his experience and his desire to succeed, he is a vital part of my plans for the future and I’m absolutely thrilled he has accepted the challenge. I said last July that Wayne has an outstanding chance to be a true legend of this club’s long and rich history. He is just 42 goals away from overtaking Sir Bobby as our record goalscorer and becoming the first United player to hit 250 goals for the club. These opportunities only come to special players and I’m confident Wayne will set a new record that will take decades to reach. These are really exciting times for everyone connected with the club.” |
Crystal Palace ban Cantona masks Posted: 21 Feb 2014 09:35 AM PST Selhurst Park, 25 January 1995, 9.00pm. The moment one of the most shocking events on an English football pitch was witnessed, as Eric Cantona hurled himself in to the crowd to karate kick a fan. Cantona had been sent off and Matthew Simmons, a member of the National Front, came forward 11 rows to shout abuse at our striker. Palace fans testified he shouted: “Fuck off back to France, you French motherfucker” and “French bastard”. Cantona told the courtroom that Simmons had said horrible things about his mum too. Simmons denied saying anything “offensive or rude”. Simmons had attended British National Party and National Front rallies and three years before the incident with Cantona he was convicted of attempted violent robbery when he attacked an attendant in a Croydon petrol station. He assaulted Sri Lankan-born Lewis Rajanayagam with a three-foot spanner, striking him in the shoulder rather than the head only because the sales assistant took evasive action. “I was absolutely terrified,” Rajanayagam said. “I thought he was going to kill me. Simmons went for my head. If it had hit me there, I would probably have had a broken skull.” At Simmons’ trial following the Cantona incident, for using threatening language and behaviour, he attacked the prosecution counsel after being found guilty, leaping over a bench and executing a flying kick of his own. He was sentenced to seven days in jail, but only served 24 hours. Whilst plenty of people attacked Cantona for his actions, he did get some support. Jimmy Greaves said: “We’ve heard a lot about Cantona’s responsibilities. What about analysing the responsibility of Simmons and every foul-mouthed yob who thinks his £10 admission gives him the right to say what he likes to a man… to abuse, taunt, spit and behave in a way that would get you locked up if you repeated it in the high street.” John Barnes said: “It’s very ironic that it took a white Frenchman to bring home to the nation the issue of racism in football.” Simmons had his season ticket taken off him as a result of the incident and was banned from the ground. He now goes to watch Fulham instead. Three years ago, he was found guilty of assaulting his son’s football coach, after spitting at him and punching him. When Cantona reflected back on his career he said: “I have a lot of good moments but the one I prefer is when I kicked the hooligan.” The last time United played at Selhurst Park, in March 2005, our travelling fans showed up in Cantona masks, and those spotted were ejected from the ground. As was reported to Reds Away, a Palace spokeswoman said: “I have been advised by our stadium manager that no supporter is permitted to cover their face.” |
Moyes’ odd dig at the Premier League Posted: 21 Feb 2014 09:22 AM PST
Whilst difficult fixtures could have explained our poor start to the season, it’s clear that the manager and players have to take responsibility for the points they’ve dropped since then and the position they now find themselves in. Moyes was fairy prickly in this afternoon’s press conference and batted away a few questions about Wayne Rooney. “Don’t bore everyone!” he said to one journalist, who wanted clarification on what future role Rooney would have in the squad. The press have been relatively easy going on Moyes so far, with him building a good relationship with journalists during his time at Everton, and being generally well-liked. Andre Villas-Boas is a good example of what will be written about you if you’re not popular, with the papers being filled with stories most weekends that suggested he was losing the plot. United’s current position is abysmal, but Moyes hasn’t received anywhere near the flack he could have done. The final question he was asked today was a fairly supportive one, talking about the chances United might have to close the gap between us and the top of the table, and he bizarrely responded by hinting the Premier League were happy that United were doing badly. This season, lots of people have said it’s the most competitive Premier League season ever, both the battle at the bottom, the top, top four, everything. Do you think this season more than ever there’s far more chance to make up a margin of eleven points? I might disagree with you about the Premier League but that’s only me. You don’t think it’s been as competitive? I think the Premier League have got it the way they want it, that’s for sure. They’ve got what they wanted. What do you mean by that? I wouldn’t answer that. |

Moyes denies that Rooney’s contract has been finalised Posted: 21 Feb 2014 06:05 AM PST Earlier today, reports claimed that Wayne Rooney’s £300k-a-week deal had been agreed upon, after finally ironing out a few snags over image rights. In his press conference today, David Moyes has denied that to be the case. "When we have news we’ll tell you. He’s a terrific player. If we can get it done it'll be great.” |
Posted: 21 Feb 2014 03:56 AM PST Carlos Queiroz, who made all the difference to United’s second most successful season in the club’s history when we won the league and European Cup double in 2008, has argued that David Moyes needs more time. "The success of Manchester United was based on a couple of principles,” he said. “The first thing was it had a good foundation of consistency, continuity, trust and confidence. The other thing I learned when I was at the club: The club always had a strong belief with the people that work inside it – they trust themselves. I want to believe that it is just a tough time at the moment and in a short period of time we will see the Manchester United everyone expects. I have been in that experience and the most important feeling is to trust each other, believe each other, and make the right decisions. If you are not able to win today, I am sure tomorrow things will be right. I think they need to be given time. Moyes deserves the chance." Queiroz became the manager of Iran in 2011 and lead them to World Cup qualification, but claims that United will always be his team. “It’s not my old team, it’s my team,” he said. “I still care. We’ll be there, don’t worry, just give us a little bit of time we’ll be there. David will be fine.” |
