Hernandez: Comment nothing to do with RVP Posted: 27 Feb 2014 04:28 PM PST Van Persie was quoted blaming his team-mates for a lack of space after their 2-0 loss to Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League in mid-week. The Mexico international posted a message on photo-sharing app Instagram that read, Without your team-mates you cant be somebody in football, always be thankful. But Hernandez used another social networking tool, Twitter, to banish speculation the post was directed at his Dutch team-mate. Before I go to sleep, I need to put this cause things get a little out of context... Hernandez said. Why do the press always take my comments out of context, my comment on Instagram had nothing to do with RVP. We are great teammates working for the same goal, the TEAM! Cause the team isnt doing as well as wed like everyone just wants to make everything look like a bad thing! Van Persies post-match comments sparked plenty of furore, including from former United midfielder Johnny Giles who labelled the goalscorer a prat. Brighton boss Garcia excited by Lingard loan Posted: 27 Feb 2014 05:05 AM PST Lingard has joined from Manchester United until the end of the season, having already enjoyed a loan spell in the Championship with Birmingham City earlier in the campaign. He made an immediate impact at St Andrew's with four goals on debut, but returned to Old Trafford in December when his deal came to an end. Garcia is confident Lingard can make an immediate impact as Brighton, currently eighth in England's second tier, seek to gain a play-off place. "We are delighted we have finally secured Jesse until the end of the season," the Spaniard said. "He is one of the most exciting young English strikers and has already created a lot of interest following his successful loan spell at Birmingham. "We worked hard to secure a talent who has already shown he can play at Championship level, and I am very pleased to have added Jesse to our striking options. "He has an excellent pedigree, having come through the academy at Old Trafford, and there is no doubt that he has a lot of talent and ability; I am really looking forward to working with him." Lingard will be immediately available to make his Brighton debut against Milwall at the New Den on Saturday. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Moyes ignores Kagawa in sushi restaurant Posted: 27 Feb 2014 03:57 AM PST Moyes and his Manchester United players decamped on Wednesday night to Umezushi on Mirabel Street in an attempt to rebuild morale after their Champions League defeat to Olympiakos. But the evening took an uncomfortable turn when Moyes consistently ignored Kagawa's attempts to explain the various exotic foodstuffs on offer, instead asking England winger Young for his thoughts on the relative merits of inarizushi and gunkanmaki. "It was really awkward," a Manchester United player, speaking on condition of anonymity, told FourFourTwo. "Shinji's mid-way through explaining that the negitoromaki might be a better bet than the funazushi on account of the latter being made with fermented carp, when the gaffer turns his back on him and asks Ashley for his thoughts on natto maki. "When Ashley says he doesn't know what natto maki is, we all assume he's going to listen to Shinji. But instead he asks Antonio [Valencia] what namasu means. Antonio does his best, but they didn't teach him that at Wigan. "The situation's crying out for Shinji, but the boss just asks Juan Mata the difference between maguro and otoro, which isn't fair on Juan, especially since he'd told him that we were all going for tapas. "In the end, he just gives the menu to Tom Cleverley and asks him to come up with the goods. Is it really a surprise that everyone ends up with a massive bowl of wasabi and a California roll?" The evening took a turn for the worse when Robin van Persie complained that everywhere he wanted to sit was already occupied by someone else, and deteriorated even further after an argument about the bill saw Moyes threaten the restaurant staff with an endless barrage of slow, looping crosses. Evra: Man United players are behind Moyes Posted: 27 Feb 2014 03:46 AM PST United have struggled under their new boss this season, slipping 15 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and exiting both domestic cup competitions. In addition, United were beaten 2-0 at Olympiacos on Tuesday in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League last 16 tie, but Evra insists Moyes retains the full backing of the squad. "There was a big change, nobody likes change," the defender told French radio station RMC Sport, acknowleding the impact made by Ferguson during his lengthy tenure at Old Trafford. "We are behind the new manager; we will do everything to qualify for the next Champions League, (and) my love for the club will not change." Evra also revealed he had not considered his future at Old Trafford and expected to stay in England for the foreseeable future. "I love Manchester," he added. "When my love is broken with Manchester, I will study the possibilities. "Everyone respects me, I feel at home here. It's beautiful. "I have very good relations with the new coach." Van Persie disappointed with lousy campaign Posted: 27 Feb 2014 12:54 AM PST Following United's 2-0 defeat to Olympiacos on Tuesday in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League last 16 tie, Van Persie criticised his team-mates for "occupying the spaces I want to play in". The Dutch striker has now expressed further disappointment with his club's displays, which have seen them slip 15 points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea and exit both domestic cup competitions prior to this week's European disappointment. "We are lousy – in a lousy position in the league, out of the cups and this (Europe) looks a difficult one also," Van Perise is quoted as saying byThe Sun. "We are very disappointed. It's a tough season. "Sometimes we play good but not always. And we are not lucky. That's no excuse, though. We need to turn it around. "We are able to play in a high tempo with a massive power but in Greece it was all too slow. "Olympiacos didn't create a lot either. The first goal was lucky, the second goal was a great one and for the rest of the game they didn't have any good chances." Despite his clear annoyance at United's poor form, Van Persie has reiterated his backing for under-fire manager David Moyes, who is enduring a trying first season in charge after succeeding Alex Ferguson. "He is new and needs time," Van Persie added. "He's working hard and so are we. "It's easy to point at the manager but that's not who I am. "We need to do it on the pitch." |
Carrick bullish over Olympiacos criticism Posted: 26 Feb 2014 04:00 AM PST David Moyes' men lost 2-0 in their last 16 first leg match in Greece on Tuesday thanks to goals from Alejandro Dominguez and Joel Campbell, prompting widespread criticism over their lacklustre display. But midfielder Carrick insisted he and his team-mates will respond strongly to the setback. "We've set standards for ourselves as players over the years and this season hasn't gone so well," he said. "We are getting shot at and criticised from all angles. "Everyone is having a bit of a dig and enjoying it. We've got to take it on the chin and bounce back and I'm sure we will." Although conceding the performance in Piraeus was way below United's best, Carrick remained positive ahead of the return leg in three weeks' time. "It's a disappointing night," the England international added. "We came here hoping to win and we haven't done that. We didn't react in the second half until it was too late. "We didn't start the second half very well; we were a bit sloppy really and they scored the second goal, which put us on the back foot. "But we're not out of the tie. We are still in with a chance going back to Old Trafford and we'll look forward to the second leg. "Don't get me wrong, to score three goals in this competition is tough, but we've done it before and we believe we can do it again." Five club heroes who roughed up their old teams Posted: 26 Feb 2014 03:09 AM PST 1. Denis Law vs Manchester United Christened the King of Old Trafford, Law scored 236 goals in 11 years for the Red Devils. Having returned across Manchester to previous club City, he backheeled the winner against the Red Devils in the penultimate game of the 1973/74 season, as United were relegated to the second tier of English football. The Reds would have gone down regardless, but Law wasn't to know. Obviously distressed, he was immediately substituted as United fans invaded the pitch in the hope that the game would be cancelled. They got their intended outcome, but the League decided that the result should stand. Law retired after making one appearance for Scotland in the 1974 World Cup. "I was inconsolable," he said in a recent interview. "I didn't want it to happen. How long did the feeling last? How long ago was the game? Thirty-odd years. There's your answer. The subject always crops up. It's one of those things. It's always there and I'm always remembered for it. That's a shame." 2. Gary McAllister vs Coventry McAllister was probably pondering which hobbies to take up post-retirement, with his best years seemingly behind him at the age of 35. All that changed when Liverpool expressed their interest. "This is fairytale stuff for someone at my stage of life," said McAllister. "It did surprise me when Liverpool came in for me." Signed by Gerard Houllier on a free transfer in 2000, the midfielder enjoyed a successful two-year spell at Anfield. During his first year he featured prominently, scoring crucial goals against the likes of Barcelona and Everton. But at the end of the season, he practically sent former side Coventry down into Division One when he scored a spectacular free-kick from 30 yards. McAllister was visibly upset after his goal helped leave Coventry - with whom he played for four seasons from 1996-2000 - five points from safety with two games to go. His contribution to Liverpool's memorable treble - FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup - will be forever remembered more happily. 3. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Manchester United He was and still is adored by many at Manchester United, and the Portuguese received one of the greatest receptions Old Trafford has ever heard upon his return with Real Madrid last season. After a goal apiece at the Bernabeu, the scene was set for the return leg – Mourinho versus Ferguson, Ronaldo versus United. Despite a placid first half, the tie sparked into life in the second period as a Sergio Ramos own goal gave United the initiative. But a controversial decision to send Nani off for a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa was the turning point, and quickly swung the tie the other way. A goal apiece from Luka Modric and Ronaldo ensured victory for the Spaniards and dumped the Portuguese's former side out of the Champions League in what would prove to be Sir Alex Ferguson's last European game in charge. 4. Fernando Morientes vs Real Madrid Not part of Madrid's plans at the start of the 2003/04 season, Morientes was loaned to ambitious Ligue 1 side Monaco. As it happened, the French club were paired with Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, after seeing off Lokomotiv Moscow in the last 16. Monaco lost the first leg 4-2 at the Bernabeu, with Morientes scoring what seemed like a consolation six minutes from time. They didn't fare much better in the early stages of the return leg,as a goal from Raul gave the Galacticos a commanding 5-2 aggregate lead. But the early setback only spurred on the hosts as they hit back, spearheaded by their on-loan Madrid man. Ludovic Giuly drove home Monaco's first from a Morientes assist, before the Spaniard turned goalscorer with superb header. A brilliant Giuly backheel gave Monaco a 3-1 win on the night, levelling the scores at 5-5 to dump Madrid out on away goals. Los Blancos coach Carlos Queiroz refused to blame the result on a suspended David Beckham. "It was a disastrous result for us," he said. "Of course we missed Beckham but you can't pin this down to the absence of one player." 5. Yoan Gouffran vs Caen Going into the final game of the 2008/09 season, Bordeaux knew that a win over struggling Caen would clinch the Ligue 1 title. They also knew that doing so could relegate their threatened opposition, who sat outside of the bottom three only on goal difference. Bordeuax did win, 1-0, with the solitary goal scored by former Caen academy graduate and current Newcastle man Gouffran. Disastrously for his old side, though, fellow drop-dodgers Saint-Etienne stuck four past Valenciennes to stay up. "I feel really sad for the fans and my former team-mates," said Gouffran, who spent five seasons with the northern side. "Will I be celebrating the title win? Maybe tomorrow or when we get back to Bordeaux, but not here and not tonight. I just can't." Caen bounced straight back the following season, but have yo-yoed between the two tiers ever since. Keane: Premier League clubs lacking in quality Posted: 25 Feb 2014 10:40 PM PST In a brutal post-match evaluation in Greece, Keane rubbished the idea the Premier League is 'the best league in the world', while he claimed United manager David Moyes does not have enough 'quality' at his disposal. United were lacklustre in their UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg on Tuesday with Alejandro Dominguez and Joel Campbell scoring either side of half-time for the hosts. Keane slammed the standard of English football, claiming Premier League clubs are dropping behind the best teams on the continent. "I think we're brainwashed by the Premier League," Keane said on British television channel ITV. "It's not the best league in the world. Nonsense. It's the best brand. "Our teams have fallen behind the best European teams, United in particular." Last week, Bayern Munich defeated Arsenal 2-0 in London, while Barcelona trumped Manchester City by the same scoreline at Etihad Stadium, meaning three of England's four teams in the last 16 are behind in the race for a quarter-final spot. Chelsea are set to face Galatasaray in Istanbul on Wednesday. The Premier League had no teams in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season, ending a run of 15 straight seasons where at least one side made the final eight of Europe's premier club competition. After the loss in Piraeus, United midfielder Michael Carrick claimed it was 'not ideal' and his response sparked another tirade from Keane. "I want him to say something. Say a bit more - a bit more urgency in his interview - it just reflected United's performance tonight. Flat, no urgency," Keane said. "They keep saying 'oh well, next game, next game' but for some of them there won't be another game. That's the reality of it." While Moyes has copped plenty of criticism for United's plight this season, Keane seemed to indicate it is not the former Everton manager's fault. "There are a number of players who haven't showed enough quality and there is a lack of confidence," the Irishman said. "United need six top quality players with Vidic, Rio, Evra, Giggsy (all going), he needs to rebuild the club. "Moyes will be shocked, he would expected good things with this squad, he'll be shocked by lack of quality he's working with." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
