Manchester United striker Rooney appeared to have objects thrown at him from a section of home supporters during the first half of Saturday's Premier League match against Palace at Selhurst Park. Rooney, who penned a new contract with the champions on Friday, went on to score after the interval as United recorded a 2-0 win over Tony Pulis' men. The FA are now in the process of gathering evidence in relation to the first-half incident. A spokesman told Perform that the FA were "seeking observations" from Palace and "working with the authorities" to determine precisely what took place. The governing body are also understood to have had a crowd-control adviser at the game, who will provide a report in addition to referee Michael Oliver.

Moyes sees chance to win Champions League

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 10:59 AM PST

Moyes' men take on Olympiacos in Greece on Tuesday in the first leg of their last 16 tie, and the Scot talked up his side's chances of claiming a fourth title come May. "I see this as an opportunity to try and win the competition," he said. "We have to go as far as we possibly can and win it, if possible. But we first have to get through this tie." Despite indifferent domestic form, United have had a strong European campaign thus far, but Moyes acknowledged they faced a stiff test against an Olympiacos side that is sweeping all before them in the Greek Super League - currently sitting 20 points clear at the summit. "I'm looking forward to the game, I really enjoy these games," he said. "To win the group was an advantage. I'm looking forward to a really tough game against Olympiacos. We have to play well to qualify. "Olympiacos have done very well against Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica. They came through a difficult group and are tough at home. It is a tough game." Moyes confirmed that defensive duo Jonny Evans and Phil Jones had not travelled, but Wayne Rooney says he and his teammates come into the game in form and are harbouring ambitions of winning the competition. "We've got the quality to go far," he said. "The aim is to get a result. Of late, our performances have been good. We're playing well and we've improved and our form in the Champions League has been excellent so far. "You normally need a bit of luck to go through but we have the quality in our team to go far, so hopefully we can do that. "Every player wants to win trophies. I'm no different."

Lack of experience no concern to Michel

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 10:47 AM PST

The Greek side boast a 20-point lead at the top of their domestic league, but head into their two-legged UEFA Champions League last 16 tie as underdogs. Although three-time European champions United boast a wealth of experience when it comes to continental competition, Michel expects his team - runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain in Group C - to prosper during Tuesday's first leg in Athens. "It is an advantage that a lot of our players do not have experience at this level," said the Spaniard. "The passion and mood we displayed to get here will guide us and we can create problems for United. "Of course experience counts, but we have the capability to overcome the lack of experience. With all due respect to United, we will do everything in our power, whatever is not forbidden." In contrast to Olympiacos, who have won 24 out of 26 league games this season, United have endured a disappointing season to date and sit sixth in the Premier League. Yet Michel is not underestimating the quality of David Moyes' outfit, preferring instead to focus on his own club's preparations. "United are top class and I will not comment about United's form. What's definite is that we will see the best possible Olympiacos (on Tuesday)," he added. "The players are fully prepared. Our opponents are such a top club that we cannot afford to give less than 100 per cent. Our opponents are too big not to be at their best. We know what we can do. "United cannot afford any mistakes given their position in the Premier League. This pressure may be a burden for the players. "It may weigh too much on the players. We do not, however, know how it will affect their performance. "We are in better shape than we were two months ago, (are) more experienced and have worked more and are better prepared. Our players are confident and psyched up." Olympiacos midfielder Giannis Maniatis echoed his coach's comments, adding: "United have not been doing so well. But it will be wrong to say that they will be easier to beat. "United are a huge and historic club that knows how to play these matches. We must be fully focused for 90 minutes. We respect them but we do not fear them." "We have all been waiting for this for a long time. It is the match of the year for us."

Yacob set for West Brom return against Man United

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 05:28 AM PST

Yacob sustained the injury during West Brom's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at The Hawthorns earlier this month. However, the Argentinian may be back for the March 8 clash with the champions as Mel seeks his first win in charge of the club. "It is possible Yacob will be available to play against United," he told the club's official website. "He is a very important player for us in the middle. He is strong and is playing well. "It is important for us to play with three midfielders because now for us it is better." Mel also confirmed the state of play with on-loan forward Scott Sinclair, who has played just one half of football since the coach's arrival. "On Friday Scott Sinclair spoke with me," the Spaniard continued. "I told him he is a good player, a good winger. "At the moment West Brom need hard work on the pitch. But I assured Scott Sinclair he will play in the future. "It is normal he is disappointed he is not playing. But I can only pick 11 and it is difficult every day."

Vidic: Man United can win Champions League

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 03:17 AM PST

The 32-year-old confirmed earlier this month that he will leave Old Trafford at the end of the campaign, with Inter among the front-runners for his signature. While United have endured a disappointing campaign in David Moyes' first season at the helm - sitting sixth in the Premier League, 15 points adrift of leaders Chelsea - they remain in contention for European glory. Ahead of the Champions League last 16 first leg with Olympiacos, Vidic asserted that United could do "something special" in the competition. "I believe that if we keep playing as we did (in Saturday's win over Crystal Palace) - solid - and improve our form again (then) we have a chance to do something good for the rest of the season," said Vidic in quotes reported by the British media. "That means fourth place and the Champions League. "I believe we can do something special in the Champions League. I really do." United ended a run of three games without victory on Saturday - Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney helping the champions to a 2-0 win at Selhurst Park. And Vidic believes there have been signs of improvement ahead of their trip to Greece, as he aims to win the Champions League for a second time with the club. "We always believe we can do well, but we know we have to improve in every game and I think we saw some signs (at Palace)," he added. "To win it you have to defend well as a team. This is the way you should play and that is encouraging for us before we go to Greece."
