Anderson predicts Man United summer exodus Posted: 03 Feb 2014 07:32 AM PST The Brazilian, who joined Fiorentina on loan during the January transfer window, has warned that some of the current squad may want out in a search for a new challenge. Anderson, who arrived in Manchester from Porto seven years ago, failed to earn regular game time under new manager David Moyes with United struggling in their attempts to defend their Premier League title. Although he is yet to taste victory as a Fiorentina player, Anderson hopes to move to Sere A permanently, expecting others to also eye an exit from United. "I am sure that lots of players want out," he said. "Especially people like myself and Nani, who have been in Manchester for seven or eight years. "Manchester United is a huge club, a club that does everything for its players, but sometimes a footballer wants to leave just to experience a different way to play football and to learn something as well. "Playing in Manchester was great, it is a prestigious club with a lot of history. "But I was there for seven or eight years and I want to show Fiorentina my quality and fight for a spot in the starting line-up. "I thank all Manchester United fans for their love, but I'm here to stay." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Macheda: Birmingham were the best choice Posted: 03 Feb 2014 06:01 AM PST The Italian moved to St Andrew's until the end of the season on deadline day, and duly came off the bench to score a stoppage-time equaliser to earn his new side a point in Saturday's 3-3 draw with Derby County. Despite an offer to return to his homeland to play for an unnamed Serie A outfit, Macheda felt a move to Lee Clark's side was the better option. "It was the choice I made and I think it's the best one," he told TheBirmingham Mail. "Yes, I could have gone back to Italy, but I won't tell you the name of the team! I had the chance. But my priority was to stay in England, I love this country. "I love football here. I've been here for seven years now, there's no better place to play than in England." The 22-year-old revealed he had not enjoyed the smoothest of starts to life in Birmingham, before going on to underline his ambitions for the club. "I only came to Birmingham on Friday night at midnight; I couldn't even find the hotel!" he said. "It was a bit frustrating for me but now I'm glad to be here, I want to do well for the team. "This is a good club with a massive support, it's a young team as well. "I met the manager a few months ago, he made a good impression on me, it's important to go to a club where I knew what I was going to do." Smalling: United short on time to make top four Posted: 02 Feb 2014 10:08 PM PST David Moyes' tumultuous time in charge of United continued on Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Stoke City. The evenness of the top sides in the English Premier League this season means United are just seven points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool despite their struggles. Smalling said the time had come for United to start putting pressure on the teams above them with results. "We've got to go into it as if we need to win every game," he said. "We're the ones who have to catch the others so we've got to win the points and put the pressure on them. "We've not done ourselves any favours with losses like this. We're not in those positions at the moment and that's a worry but there is plenty of football left. "There's a lot to go but time is running out and we need to make sure we put things right come the next game. "Each point that we drop makes it difficult for ourselves. Other teams will drop points as well but we need to stop ¬dropping points. We need to put pressure on other teams." Smalling said the players understood a top-four finish was the minimum expectation for a team coming off a title-winning season. The 24-year-old played down the pressure on Moyes by saying it was up to the players to turn United's season around. "We don't really talk about it but we all know that's the minimum we need to aim for," Smalling said. "It is only we players who can get us out of this muddle that we're in." |
Solskjaer: Zaha can be as good as Ronaldo Posted: 02 Feb 2014 09:51 PM PST Zaha, on loan at Cardiff from Manchester United, inspired a comeback by his new club, setting up a goal in their 2-1 win over Norwich in the English Premier League on Saturday. Solskjaer said Zaha had all the skills to become the world's best but only if the 21-year-old has the same desire as former United star and Real Madrid attacker Ronaldo. "He is one of the best I have seen with the ball. He has quick feet and is brave like Cristiano and wants to go forward," Solskjaer said. "But he has got to make a - decision about how good does he want to be and how much does he love this game. He can grow up to become a proper player like Ronaldo if he wants. "I have never seen anyone work as hard as Ronaldo. Before training, after training, he was an exceptionally dedicated man and proved to everyone what - dedication gets you." Solskjaer, who played with Ronaldo at Manchester United, said he was unfazed about comparing Zaha, who has failed to live up to his £15 million price tag, to the Portuguese striker and wants the former Crystal Palace winger to strive to be the best. "I am not afraid of using Sir Alex Ferguson or Cristiano as an example when I have to because to get the best out of your talent you need to be dedicated," Solskjaer said. "It's a desire and attitude from within. It's what you've got in your heart and Cristiano's always had it." Zaha was introduced late in the first half against Norwich and can expect much more game time than he was getting under David Moyes at United. Solskjaer gave an insight into how he treats his players and said he was looking forward to working with Zaha. "Everyone needs to be loved. It's like with your kids. You love them but you also have to tell them straight. It's the same with players," the Norwegian manager said. "He came on and made an impact, he lifted everyone and just wants to play football. "That's something he will get loads of here. I'm really looking forward to working with him." |
Premier League spending hits record levels Posted: 01 Feb 2014 02:45 AM PST Spending in the January window was roughly £130 million, taking the league's total for 2013-14 to £760m - breaking the £700m barrier for the first time. Manchester United signed Juan Mata for a club-record £37.1m in January's biggest move - with Chelsea investing £12m of that into the signing of Kurt Zouma, although the Frenchman will remain with Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the season. This year's total was well below the record for a January window, £225m in 2011, but a series of big-money moves earlier in the campaign have helped the overall figure. Arsenal smashed their transfer record to sign Mesut Ozil for £42.5m, with Chelsea spending an estimated £60m to bring the likes of Andre Schurrle, Willian and Samuel Eto'o to Stamford Bridge. Tottenham reinvested a world-record fee for Gareth Bale into seven signings, including Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho among others. Manchester City were typically free-spending, signing Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic on multi-million-pound deals. Meanwhile, the added money in the English top-flight thanks to record television deals allowed a number of clubs further down the table to break their transfer record. Newly-promoted duo Hull City and Cardiff City have each broken their record on three separate occasions this term and Deloitte's Dan Jones can only see the trend continuing. He said: "It is important to put this in context; the transfer spending is supported by the record level of revenues of Premier League clubs, driven primarily by new broadcast agreements. "This gives Premier League clubs the ability to continue to invest significantly in their playing talent. "Spending has again been driven by a minority of clubs, with just two accounting for more than 60 per cent of the league's total spending. "Around half of Premier League clubs chose not to spend this month." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
