Rooney and Van Persie could face Cardiff Posted: 27 Jan 2014 07:23 AM PST Netherlands international Van Persie has missed the last 11 games in all competitions due to a thigh injury, while Rooney has been sidelined since New Year's Day due to a groin problem. Moyes revealed the strike duo trained on Monday along with midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who has been struggling with a back problem and also underwent surgery on his wrist. And the trio could be back in the squad when the Premier League champions face their former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's struggling Cardiff City side at Old Trafford on Tuesday. United have endured a disappointing season so far, but Moyes now has plenty of grounds for optimism following the record signing of Juan Mata and the return of key players. Rooney and Van Persie played an integral role as United regained the title last season, but the pair have started only 26 games between them in the top flight in the current campaign and have been sorely missed. Mata trained with his new team-mates on Monday for the first time since his £37.1million move from Chelsea, but Moyes has not yet decided whether the Spain midfielder will make his debut against Cardiff. Moyes expects Solskjaer to be given a great ovation when he returns to the club where he made his name during his playing days. The former Norway striker was a fans' favourite at Old Trafford due to his goalscoring exploits in an illustrious 11-year career at the club, with his late winner in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich his finest hour. Moyes said: "Ole will get a fantastic reception and deserves it. He is a legend for what he has done here." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Pochettino has no intention of selling Shaw Posted: 27 Jan 2014 07:07 AM PST The teenage full-back has been linked with a move to both Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window after impressing since Southampton's return to the Premier League in 2012. Shaw came through the academy system at St Mary's, and Pochettino has insisted he wants to keep hold of the highly rated 18-year-old while also bolstering his squad. "Southampton has no interest in selling him (Shaw), not at this moment or in the summer," the Argentinian said, ahead of his side's trip to table-topping Arsenal on Tuesday. "We have no intention. "We are working on some things (incoming transfers). We have a great group of scouts working for us. "We are assessing the balance of the squad. Maybe we will be able to do something in the next few days. "As the manager, I am fully focused on the tomorrow's match. We have other people to look after them (transfers)." Moyes never expected to sign Mata this month Posted: 27 Jan 2014 06:24 AM PST The Spain international became the Premier League champions' most expensive acquisition when a deal worth £37.1 million was sealed on Saturday. United boss Moyes had been alerted to the possibility the playmaker could be available in January, but did not anticipate luring the former Valencia man to Old Trafford. Speaking at a press conference to unveil the 25-year-old on Monday, Moyes said: "I'm thrilled. I got wind a month or so ago that it could be a possibility. I never really believed I'd pull it off. "When we heard Juan would be available we went after him. Congratulations to the club and Ed Woodward (United chief executive) for getting it done." Mata will wear the number eight shirt and is expected to make his debut against Cardiff City on Tuesday. The United new boy had been left frustrated after falling out of favour at Chelsea and believes the opportunity to join United will enhance his chances of playing in this year's FIFA World Cup. He said: "It is really important (to be playing more regularly), because the Spanish squad is difficult to get in. "We are fighting for positions to get in the last 23 for Brazil, so it is a chance for me to keep playing and keep fit, to show the national manager I want to be there and have to be there. "I just wanted to go to a place where I could feel happy and I'm happy now. Manchester United is a massive club, it will be amazing for me and it is a massive step." Mata also believes United can put a disappointing season so far behind them and qualify for the UEFA Champions League by securing a top-four finish. He added: "What I like most about this club is the character. I think if another club would be in a position like this it would be difficult to come back into a top position, but this club can do it with the character and fighting on the pitch. "This is the image I have of Manchester United, always fighting with spirit." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Solskjaer relishing Old Trafford return Posted: 27 Jan 2014 04:44 AM PST The Norwegian can expect a rapturous reception from United fans, who hold him in high esteem due to his exploits during his playing days with the reigning Premier League champions. Solskjaer enjoyed an illustrious 11-year spell at Old Trafford and his finest hour came when he scored a dramatic late winner in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich. The 40-year-old is not sure how he will react when he returns with his Cardiff side, but the former striker will not lose sight of the job in hand as he attempts to keep his new club in the top flight. When it was put to the Cardiff boss that the prospect of going to Old Trafford may not be as ominous as it once was, he said: "I don't agree. "To go to Old Trafford is a dream for many footballers and sometimes that can be daunting as well for teams and players. Obviously it's going to be my job to make sure that it isn't too daunting for my players and also myself. "I'm not too much of an emotional guy. I'm more professional than emotional. I'll go there and of course I'll enjoy it, but I'm not thinking about the surroundings, I'm thinking about my team. "I've had had a great relationship with them (United fans). When we've watched the United games over the years back in Norway, I've nudged the kids and said 'they are still singing about your dad.' "I'm not that emotional as I said. It's hard to say, though. You never know, sometimes it just catches you doesn't it? Like when you do your wedding speech. I will focus on the job on Tuesday night though." Premier League Preview: Man United vs Cardiff Posted: 26 Jan 2014 06:09 AM PST The Spain midfielder completed his £37.1million move from Chelsea on Saturday and is expected to go straight into the starting line-up on Tuesday. Mata's arrival is a timely boost for United, who crashed out of the League Cup on penalties in their semi-final against Sunderland last week on the back of a 3-0 top-flight defeat at Chelsea. Manager David Moyes will be expecting Mata to provide the touch of class that United have been lacking in what has been a disappointing season so far for the Premier League champions. United's prospects of retaining their title are forlorn, as Moyes' men are seventh in the table and 14 points adrift of leaders Arsenal. Moyes will still be confident of clinching qualification for the UEFA Champions League, though, as Liverpool are six points better off than the Old Trafford outfit. United drew 2-2 at Cardiff back in November in the first meeting between the two sides since 1975 and since then Solskjaer replaced Malky Mackay at the Welsh club. The 40-year-old can expect a rapturous reception on his return to Old Trafford, where he spent 11 years during his playing days and enjoyed a major role in such a successful period in United's history, including scoring the winner in the 1999 Champions League final. The Norwegian has been charged with the task of keeping Cardiff in the Premier League, but they slipped to the bottom of the table with a 4-2 defeat at Manchester City in their last top-flight match. Cardiff need to improve their away form if they are to avoid a return to the Championship, as they have won only once on their travels in the top flight. Solskjaer's side did win at Bolton Wanderers in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, but Cardiff have taken just a point from their last six Premier League games. The Cardiff boss will be hoping United strike duo Robin van Persie (thigh) and Wayne Rooney (groin) are not yet ready to return. Moyes will also assess the fitness of Rio Ferdinand (knee), Nani (hamstring) and Michael Carrick (ankle), but captain Nemanja Vidic will not definitely not feature as he serves the second of a two-match suspension following his red card at Chelsea. Kenwyne Jones could make his Cardiff debut if a swap deal with Stoke City involving Peter Odemwingie goes through in time and forward Jo Inge Berget could make his bow following his move from Molde last week. The likes of Fraizer Campbell, Steven Caulker and Craig Noone are expected to return to the starting line-up. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
