Republik Of Mancunia

Fergie trusts Mourinho more than his own brother?? Riiiight…

It came as a shock to most people when rumours started circulating on the evening of May 7th that Sir Alex Ferguson planned to retire at the end of the 2012/2013 season, having wrapped up the title weeks before the end of the season.

That night, Ferguson rang up his brother and closest confidante, Martin, to let him know of his decision.

"Alex phoned me and told me, and that was the first I heard of it,” Martin recalled. “It came right out of the blue. It wasn't anything he'd discussed with family or friends. He just said he was retiring and would be making an announcement about it in the morning. I was with him on Sunday and he never breathed a word. He was just the same as ever and in good spirits and focused the same as always. I think he kept it tight to his chest out of loyalty to Manchester United and wishing to do it in the right way. He will be annoyed that somebody let it out. I would imagine he will be very annoyed."

Yesterday, Jose Mourinho yet again denied that he had been desperate for the United job, despite it being reported for years that it was the post he wanted to return to England for and that he was devastated that United hadn’t even considered him for it. That is understandable. He’s hardly going to admit now, as manager of Chelsea, that they were his second choice.

He then went on to claim that Ferguson had told him of his plans to retire two weeks before the news has been made public.

“I knew a couple of weeks before the announcement because my friend was nice to me and trusted me completely,” he said. “He told me something really important before the press. He said I was one of his best friends in football so he wanted me to know before I read about it. I was afraid because I was sure someone might leak and the boss might think it had come from me. But it would never have.”

In June, Mourinho claimed it wasn’t a few weeks before, but actually many months before, that Ferguson had told him.

“I knew that Ferguson was retiring many months ago and I was so happy to have his trust,” he said. “It was big news for the world. I can imagine that just a very close circle around him knew that and it was a big responsibility for me to know that. Why do I know that? Because we are friends.”

So Ferguson told his own brother the day before but confided in Mourinho “many months” earlier? Right, ok. It makes you wonder whether this fantasist even knows himself when he is telling the truth and when he is lying.

Mourinho suggests Chelsea DID offer us Mata/Luiz

Posted: 18 Jan 2014 05:39 AM PST

In the summer, when Chelsea were confident their club would be prising Wayne Rooney away from Manchester, a rumour circulated that Jose Mourinho was prepared to let Juan Mata or David Luiz move in the opposite direction.

The rumour was quickly dismissed, with Chelsea fans scoffing at the idea that Mourinho would be prepared to let Mata, their player of the season two years running, leave the club.

Chelsea FC released a statement to deny the rumours: "Chelsea can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney. Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for the avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any player from Chelsea to Manchester United."

As the months have gone by, and it has been shown that Mata clearly is a player Mourinho would allow to leave, you had to wonder whether there was more truth to those rumours.

Yesterday, Mourinho was again asked about his plans to sign Rooney, but he insisted Chelsea had no chance.

“United were clear in the way they approached the Rooney situation,” he said. “They don't swap. They don't sell. I don't see that changing, they were very clear about that.”

Strange then that Mourinho claims United were very clear they wouldn’t be swapping Rooney for any Chelsea players, when Chelsea supposedly never offered a swap in the first place…

Cahill: Moyes will prove doubters wrong

Posted: 18 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST

Tim Cahill, who played for David Moyes at Everton for eight years, has spoken out in defence of his former manager.

“There’s been so much focus on Manchester United’s struggles this season, but a manager should be judged over two campaigns – and after eight years playing under David Moyes, I know he’s got all the attributes to prove everyone wrong,” Cahill told Fox Sports. “Everyone is talking about it because at a team like United, this season’s results haven’t been acceptable because of what Sir Alex Ferguson created over his tenure. It feels like there’s an assessment of Moyes’s credentials after each game at the moment – but he’s definitely someone who can take it on the chin. Any manager going to a new club is going to take time to adapt – notwithstanding injuries to a player like Robin van Persie – but the club has identified his qualities, they know what he’s achieved and can see the bigger picture.”

Moyes signed Cahill from Millwall for £1.5m in 2004. To put that in to perspective, that summer Birmingham paid £6.25m for Emile Heskey. He finished the season as the club’s top scorer and was voted Player of the Year by the fans. Two years later he made the shortlist of 50 players for the Ballon d’Or, becoming Everton’s first player in 18 years to be nominated.

“Look at my scenario: I’m no world beater but he got the best out of me,” Cahill continued. “Staying back and doing crossing sessions with him, working on my movements, being in the video room going over players with me, analysing teams, having the sheets for the players I’m playing against. He never let me rest on my laurels. Despite our personal relationship, he would always tell me if I was out of form or if I needed a kick up the backside. Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, those at the club: they can see those attributes. They signed him to a long-term contract, because he epitomises what they stand for. He’s honest, loyal and he gives everything. And he considers your personal and family life too – whether it’s pulling you into the office, making sure everyone’s fine – my kids or my parents. There was always time for a phone call or a coffee. Sure, there were the odd arguments too, but they made us stronger, because they were constructive, particular in terms of playing, to keep me on track.”
