Posted: 22 Jan 2014 06:46 PM PST After winning the semi-final second leg at Old Trafford after extra time and levelling the tie at 3-3, United missed four of their five spot-kicks in the penalty shootout to crash out of the tournament. It appeared that Sunderland would advance in extra time after Phil Bardsleys 119th minute goal but Javier Hernandez equalised seconds later to force the tie into penalties. Moyes was adamant that his side did not play well enough to advance to the final and that it would have been an injustice to Sunderland. If we were going to get through, we were going to stumble over the line, not because we played well enough, Moyes said. We didnt play well enough to merit going through - Sunderland came here and deservedly got themselves in the final. Sunderland keeper Vito Mannone saved Rafaels penalty to send his side into the final with Danny Welbeck, Adnan Januzaj and Phil Jones also fluffing their spot-kicks. Moyes had no qualms with choice of penalty takers - with the players choosing the five takers themselves- but labelled the execution in the shootout as terrible with several key players unable to participate. In the end, I just dont think we got the level of performance we needed to get through the game, he said. It went to penalties - and our penalties were terrible. Ideally, it wouldnt have been the group we had chosen - Javier (Hernandez) would have taken a penalty but was injured and people like Michael Carrick would have been involved. Theres always going to be a loser in a semi-final and it happens to be us because we didnt execute our penalties well enough. In better news for United, it appears that Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata is close to joining the club for a reported fee of 37million. United informed the media gathered at the post-match conference that Moyes would only answer questions about the game. When asked about Mata during the press conference, Moyes replied: We are not saying anything. |
Posted: 22 Jan 2014 06:46 PM PST The Spain international, Chelseas player of the year for the past two seasons, has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford after falling out of favour following the return of Jose Mourinho as manager. Media reports on Wednesday suggested a fee in the region of 35million had been agreed between the clubs, with the Spaniards move to be finalised swiftly. However, Moyes was in no mood to shed any light on the situation in the aftermath of Uniteds dramatic League Cup semi-final defeat to Sunderland - sealed in a penalty shootout. Mata has made just 11 Premier League starts for Chelsea this term, but now has the chance to relaunch his career with the reigning champions, who are desperate to improve on their current position of seventh. United were widely criticised for a lack of activity in the previous transfer window, when Guillermo Varela and Marouane Fellaini represented the only new arrivals at the club. Moyes, who succeeded Alex Ferguson at the end of the 2012-13 campaign, has also come under pressure due to his sides poor league form and will hope Mata proves the catalyst for a revival in the seasons remaining months. Mata joined Chelsea from Valencia in June 2011 and has scored 33 goals in 135 appearances for the London club. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Poyet hails incredible Sunderland triumph Posted: 22 Jan 2014 03:19 PM PST A Jonny Evans goal in the 37th minute looked to be enough to send Manchester United through on away goals at Old Trafford, but Phil Bardsley netted a late leveller in extra time to put Sunderland 3-2 ahead on aggregate. Javier Hernandez capped a frantic last two minutes by netting another for United to send the match to penalties, which saw just three players find the net before Vito Mannone made a crucial save from Rafael to seal a 2-1 spot-kick victory and book a March meeting with Manchester City at Wembley. "You know how difficult it's been this season for us," he said. "It's been really tough for the players, the fans, the club, the chairman. Every single one. "To have a day of football like today is incredible." "It's great for everybody, great for football. I know for Man United it's not that good. I thought it was a great story for football - let's see if we can go one more. "The things that happened today is incredible, but the players have been outstanding. Credit to them." Asked whether he thought Sunderland could defeat Manchester City in the final, Poyet looked ahead to what he knew would be a tough ask. "Who knows?" he added. "It's going to be an incredible task. We need to be our best, hope Manchester City have a bad day, be very organised and take our chances. "The idea is to go and make the fans proud as well, so if we play like we did today, maybe we get that chance." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
League Cup: Man United 2 Sunderland 1 (1-2 pens) Posted: 22 Jan 2014 03:17 PM PST The rumoured United target saved Rafael's crucial penalty in a dismal shootout which saw just three players find the back of the net after the hosts had won an incredible second leg 2-1. Jonny Evans put the hosts ahead in the 37th minute with a header from close range, but neither side could find the quality to breach either defence thereafter. With away goals not coming into force until the end of extra time in the competition, United were required to hang on to their narrow lead for an additional 30 minutes, but looked to be out when David de Gea could only shovel Phil Bardsley's strike into the net. In a frantic last two minutes, Javier Hernandez then sent the tie to penalties from close range, but with both teams short of quality from spot, Mannone made the vital save to book Sunderland a spot in their first League Cup final since 1985. Moyes made five changes to the United side that lost the tie's opener, with Darren Fletcher and Hernandez among the players to come in, the Mexican denied early on as his headed effort from an Adnan Januzaj free-kick was palmed away by Mannone. With chances at a premium, Fabio Borini lashed a speculative half-volley over, while Darren Fletcher hit the post at the other end, before Danny Welbeck's follow-up was cleared. But Moyes' men were ahead moments later, as two former Sunderland loanees combined to level the tie. Welbeck flicked the ball on from a corner from the right, teeing up Evans to head home from inside the six-yard box. Rafael went agonisingly close to giving United an aggregate lead four minutes into the second half, hooking a left-footed strike just over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area. Januzaj was next to try his luck from distance, drilling just wide of the right-hand upright in the 55th minute, but both teams struggled to break down the opposition defence as the half progressed, with extra time looking an increasingly likely prospect. Sunderland had cause to feel harshly done by in the closing stages of normal time when Chris Smalling escaped punishment for a tug on Steven Fletcher, before Marcos Alonso blazed narrowly wide of the right-hand post from a tight angle. Bardsley looked to have sent Sunderland into the final when De Gea spilled his 20-yard effort into the net in the 119th minute, but Hernandez and Januzaj exchanged passes well before the former smashed home from close range to force penalties. Alonso, Ki Sung-Yueng and Darren Fletcher netted in an otherwise dismal showing among the first eight spot kicks Adam Johnson appeared to have wasted Sunderland's chance to win as De Gea saved his effort from 12 yards, but Rafael saw the following spot-kick saved as Mannone earned victory for Sunderland, who now meet Manchester City at Wembley on March 2. Man United must make changes, says Mancini Posted: 21 Jan 2014 11:57 PM PST The Galatasaray coach believes his former club Manchester City, along with the likes of Chelsea, have overtaken United by bringing in new players to bolster their respective squads. And the league table underlines that fact, with David Moyes' side 14 points off top spot, having lost as many top-flight games as City and Chelsea combined. "Chelsea changed and bought some new players, City bought four or five new players," Mancini told BBC World Service. "After many years, it's the time (for United) to refresh the team." United's title defence is proving to be one of the most meek in Premier League history but Mancini refused to lay the blame at the feet of their Scottish manager. Moyes was widely praised for the job he did at Everton over the course of more than a decade, although he never won a trophy, and Mancini is confident that the three-time LMA Manager of the Year will get it right at Old Trafford. "I think there is a good chance for him - he worked for 10 years at Everton and he did a really good job," the Italian added. "He is a good manager and I don't think he needs my advice." One of the biggest challenges facing Moyes is the weight of his predecessor's legacy, with Alex Ferguson credited as the man who turned United into one of the most successful sides in Europe, and certainly England's most decorated club of the Premier League era. And Manciniacknowledged that Moyes had perhaps the toughest of all acts to follow. "Alex was at the top but for every manager it is difficult (to come) after him," he added. "It's totally different to manage a team that should win every game, that every year (should) win a title or the Champions League." Moyes, whose side won the Community Shield in August, will continue his quest for a first piece of major silverware when United welcome Sunderland in the League Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday. The hosts must overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit if they are to set up a Wembley showdown with rivals Manchester City. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
